Did anyone see the Today Show?? Did you catch the segment on the most popular dogs registered by AKC last year. As I think most of us knew, the Lab was #1 and the Yorkie was #2, I feel this is a good news, bad news thing, but what I was NOT pleased with was the way Al Roker squirmed, mentioned the work "RAT", and Yorkies "were not real dogs". First, I will admit, Fancy is more like my "child", but my "not real dog" rules over a 75 lb. Greyhound and a 4 month old Boxer that is definately MUCH larger than she is! Shame on you Al Roker...May one of these "little rats" jump up and bite you on your butt! |
With comments like that..they should expect the today show to end tomorrow. |
I also heard them mention that this is the 1st time ever a small dog made the most popular list. Yeh... for Yorkies |
I don't believe that i'm sure other smaller breeds have made it..theres no way that they never made it to the list before and now all of a sudden they're in second place?! give me a break..I think they just wanted to sound tough so they made stupid comments like that. |
Oh no, I'll bet he gets lots of letters; he has no idea how protective we are of our little ones. Truthfully, I don't think of Joey as a real dog, I think of him as a precious gift from heaven. Not thrilled about them being highly rated. This usually is bad news for the breed in general. Nancy |
I'm glad he made comments like that ...While it isn't true they look like little rats :( - there are too many people who follow fads....so maybe what he said is a good thing in disguise ???:D the yorkie was GORGEOUS on the show and totally not rat like and I can't believe he said it - but he WAS joking....and anytime a breed gets this popular - it just isn't a good thing for the breed in general.... I think we're already seeing this with all the sick puppies being sold. :( :( :( and Nancy you're so right - I think of my girls as little kids - they're dogs I KNOW but so childlike you can't help but treat them like children lol - and they ARE little Gifts to us. I sure loved that yorkie they had on the show. What a doll she/he was |
I don't like comments like that either but, I just ignore them...I don't think they mean they LOOK like rats...it's just their size! I get that all the time! I also get...why are you walking your guinea pig? I just laugh it off and tell the girls they are my beautiful babies...I have other important things on my mind right now than peoples rude comments! |
Yorkies I wish Yorkies would become the most "unpopular" breed to own...then there would be none in puppymills and pet shops... |

i agree this isnt a good thing that there # 2 |
Yeah, that was my good news, bad news..Over breeding is already such a problem with these beautiful babies. |
I didn't take it like that though.. I don't think he meant it in bad way.... not worth thing to be upset about! ;) |
The Today Show I saw that too. I started to talk back to Al Roker but I realized that he was just ignorant about our beloved babies. My natural grown children know that my little girl, BeBe, is the light of my life. She has given me such joy especially this past Christmas season. I usually feel a tad depressed but with BeBe around, it's just impossible to think of anything else. It's all about her in our place. My fiancee and I are just crazy about our little girl. She is 4Lbs and just about 61/2 months. P.S. can someone tell me if this is a normal weight for her? My fiancee says she is eating like a piglet but I see her as very healthy and active and cute and adorable, etc..........:aimeeyork |

Btw, does anyone know what the most impopular breed is? Can you imagine how popular yorkies would be if they were featured on a television series or Disney movie? Nancy |
I do think Al was joking when he said that.... but with the Yorkie being #2 now...its only going to add fuel to the fire with all these BYB's....UGH:mad: We will be seeing more yorkies being born sick, more of them in shelters and people breeding just to breed for the fun of it......its actually quite sad. All because they said that small dogs are all the rage now and one of the hot new trends..... I wish they would think about what they say before they actually say soemthing like that.... |
I have to admit, I WAS one of those people who used to think of little dogs as "rats". I've always been a big dog person, until I got my first Chihuahua, Mia. After that, I was a sucker for little dogs. After all, they are dogs, just in little bodies. :) I think puppy mills will always be a problem, with whatever dogs are the current fad. My dad and I were just talking the other day about how popular labs became years ago, and people started breeding them like crazy. Now you can find AKC labs in the paper for $50 or less. I get sick at all the lab ads I see. So many people are still breeding less than ideal dogs, just to make a few bucks. It also makes me sick to see how many labs are in animal shelters. :( |
I certainly have mixed feelings about the Yorkie being so popular. They are a great breed. I have bonded with this breed and now many good people get to enjoy them as well. Along with that, there is also the downside and that is where we all become educators outside and within this great forum. |
I saw that too this morning, just caught the end of it. He said something like, you sure thats a real dog, not a rat? Then he said, no really, its cute. --really this is the absolute truth-I was sitting right here the other day-and I saw across the kitchen a REAL RAT come out of my laundry room walk over to LillyBelle's food, take some and walk back to the laundry-I just sat frozen and shocked. ****It didnt look a thing like my LillyBelle**** We now have a trap set, but havnt caught it yet. |
Has being no. 1 hurt the labrador retriever breed, do you think? |
Aw, people make joking comments like that all the time, and it doesn't offend me. I understand why some people don't think they're "real" dogs....and let's face it...even WE don't really think they're dogs! :D We think they're HUMAN! :D People in my own family (husband and sons) gave me a hard time for wanting a "little rat dog". Until we GOT them! :D And now they're the biggest yorkies fans in the world! :D I figure, dispairaging comments just spring from the ignorance of the yorkie-uninitiated! :D |

I know Al must have ruffled alot of Yorkie lover's feathers!! I agree it's not great that they are popular...yet I don't think we would have Pippa right now if my daughter hadn't seen a few yorkies around and thought that her life's dream was to have a dog..namely yorkie. She has long since moved on, but mom (me) fell in LOVE! I wouldn't have ever known what a wonderful breed they are. I woulda still been a "cat" person:) The most offensive thing anyone ever said about Pippa: "That's not a dog, that's lunch". From a Big Dog's owner. I wanted to open up a can....but I just chose to ignore:mad: |

I just had to laugh at that. You must have been somewhat taken aback by his audacity. You do want to get him though. I've heard that dogs can get leptospirosis from rats eating or drinking from their bowls. Quote:

My husband said that about our lab eating our yorkie when we first got him. Of course he didnt and they are the best of friends. Also at least in this area, labs are $250-300. There are few large labs in the pounds here. Chance our lab has always been very energetic, but now he just tries to keep up with Rusty our Yorkie! The hardest part has been that Rusty is so hard to potty train. We just had our carpet cleaned in October and it looks like 100 dogs pee here every day! We have tried to do it outside only, and resorted to pee pads, but he just pees next to them! It is so frusterating we have tried everything that people recommend. He is 6 months old. I am pregnant and my husband says if hes not potty trained by the time the baby comes we have to get rid of him. Sorry to change the topic! |
What is scary about Yorkies being #2 on the AKC list is that EVERYONE will want one. And soon shelters will be filled with sad shivering yorkies turned in by owners who just can't handle these delightfully energetic, intelligent, sensitive furkids. |

Gosh, I hope you catch him soon! |

I know this has gotten alittle off the Today Show topic-but is about a RAT nontheless. Still have not caught the rat-hubby put down 2 traps w/peanut butter-guess he doesnt like peanut butter, put a bucket with LillyBelles food in it, and a stool so the rat could get in but not out-he got in ate the food and somehow got out. Now have a larger bucket, sprayed the sides with oil-but he hasnt gotten in this one. We've been keeping the laundry room door closed-so at least he cant come out into the kitchen and EAT HER FOOD. **I named the rat Ben-yikes!--he bares NO resemblence to LillyBelle!** |
