Overpaid for yorkie 2 Attachment(s) Hello all, I am feeling guilty lately considering how much we paid for our yorkie. She was an excellent breeder, and the pups grew up in her living room in a playpen, and I got to see both parents. My yorkie has a babydoll face and will by small (we didn't care about that). We paid 1500.00. It is hard for me to sit with that knowledge, worrying that we got ripped off. I could have gotten an 800 dollar yorkie from a backyard breeder and lucked out on the temperament, people seem to do so all the time. Ugh. And then the spay, another 200 dollars. THE GUILT IS SETTING IN. |
Sounds like you picked a great breeder and that means alot when it comes to their health. Don't worry about what you paid, she's pricless, right?? LOVE that bath pic. Her ears are sooo cute!! |
Bath :D Ha, she hated the bath. And the breeder bathed her several times. She looks like a wet rat, or something. She is all EARS! Also, she is 10 weeks old, and we have rarely heard her bark. Tonight she did during playtime, as she was a complete crazy hyped wildwoman. I said, "no bark." Since she barks so little, is that likely to hold into adulthood? Or am I jumping the gun? When we went to see the pups at the breeder's house, none of her adults barked at us. She said that her dogs were not "yappers." If she was a huge barker, would it have started by now? Thanks again everyone! :animal-sm |
I think she is darling and my feelings are what is done is done, why waste time worrying or stressing over something you cannot know change? |
It doesn't sound like she will be a yapper. Lily also rarely barks. About the only time she does is when where in bed and she hears something. When nothing shows up to eat us, she quiets back down. |
She is beautiful. I got taken when I bought my first yorkie. Live and learn, right? Even now I would rather pay a good breeder more for all the love and work they put in. Paying $1500 for an adorable dog that isn't yappy sounds like a bargain to me. ;) |
Your yorkiebaby is adorable! I am sure she is worth every penny ;) |

I couldn't agree more. Breeders don't make money on puppies they sell cheaply. They really only make money on the pups that bring more money. Which is not to say that a $500 yorkie is any less "valuable" than a $3000 one. In my neck of the woods (southern California) $1500 for the cute little girl you got would be a terrific bargain!! It you figure that your baby should live 15 years, that's only $100 per year or less than 30 cents day. That is cheap for what you will get back from her!! Yorkies range in price from $500 to $10,000 and the average I would say for a high quality pet or a puppy with show potential is closer to $3000 in my experience. The super tiny females are in great demand right now and rarely go for less than $5000. Your little girl is "Priceless" no matter how you look at it and worht every penny! Enjoy! |
Ditto!! she's just beautiful! :D and well worth it!! Besides it's only money  after awhile you won't even think about how much you spent on her, that feeling will go away and you will see! I think it's guilt about the amount, I went through the same feeling so I think it is normal. and from where she came from sounds like she had a very good home and well taken care of, I have never breed, but I have heard it can be quite expensive to give quality care to the breeding and care of mom & babies. she has such a little baby face... :D |
Awww, thanks guys! I confess, I love to hear people gushing...I feel like a proud new mama. Oh, and we are working on barettes in the hair, she hates them, and tries to get them out! |
She is a doll...I feel you usually get what you pay for in most cases. 1500.00 is cheap from a good breeder. Angie |
Wow, she is gorgeous and yup, she sure is "all ears"!! She is SOOO cute and I am sure she will be worth every single dollar. You think $200 for spaying is bad.. wait until you start buying bunches and bunches of clothes for her! lol, another spoiled Yorkie on YT! |
What a cutie!!! You got a good deal, and she is wonderful. $1500 is the standard price around here too. As far as the not barking...Oscar is 6mo. and he also rarely barks. Good luck with her :) |
1 Attachment(s) If she came from a good breeder who takes good care of her mom and dad and took good care of her and her litter mates, you got a good deal. Up here that would be a little pricey, but in a lot of other places it isn't. Usually it is the petstore that sells them that high arought here. She does have some ears on her though. You ought to teach her how to fly, lol. She is cute though. (BTW, I can laugh at her ears because I have one with the same ears, see attached.) Love them ears :) |
I hope her ears aren't freaky big, she looked goofy I am hoping because she was wet! I am from Minnesota, and the papers (which is a bad source for breeders, and I did not use it) usually have yorkies from about $600-1200 range. My biggest pet peeve with dogs is whining. She sometimes whines when she is in her baby playpen, and we will say, "shhh" and she will *usually* quiet down. She is ten weeks old, I wonder at what age we should remove her playpen from the bedroom to see if she can sleep alone. I WANT TO DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO AVOID SEPARATION ANXIETY. That sounds like a nightmare once it starts. |
your baby is adorable and worth every penny! Dogs from good breeders will cost you less in the long run because you'll pay less in vet bills if your dog is healthy. Barking doesn't usually start until they're about 6 or 7 months, and its so cute when they find they're voice! I wouldn't worry about the whining too much, she's only 10 weeks old. As for sleeping alone.....dogs are pack animals and she should always sleep with her pack (that would be your family ;) ) because it will give her a sense of security. P.S. her ears are precious! |
Don't be guilty about the price you paid for . I paid mine $2.500.00 and don't have been guilty yet . She is a doll . Lol.....when they are wet , they all have strange looks . I can't hardly see Gazou after a bath . |
I think you're in the ballpark on price - I wouldn't feel guilty at all - she's cute and it's a pretty normal price.....Good luck...I keep seeing post saying they sell up to 10 grand and I don't think glorifying that price is a good idea - there's only a few sites that do that and they're not good sites at all. |
price NO way..$1500 is a very fair price for a nice pet Yorkie...we have members who paid double and triple for pets..relax. So much goes into price..area, type breeder, on and on...there is an ad for $200 Yorkies on here...that tranalates into " I spare all costs when breeding a litter"... |
I don't think $1500 is too bad....especially if you got her from a really good breeder. Sounds like you did the right thing to me. She is adorable!!!! Congrats! |
I think 15000 is very reasonable and like someone else said... a happy healthy pup is priceless! |
If you check around your area there is probably a low cost spay and neuter program that could save you some money on the spay. She's great! I wouldn't feel guilty if I were you, that extra money won't make or break you in the long run and you can't put a price on happiness!! |

A backyard breeder or a puppymill is never a good solution . Pay less from them often mean higher cost for vet bills . I have heard too many horror stories about them . Example : This happens to a person I know . He paid $200.00 for a shih tzu puppy , he was so happy . Today is vet bills are up to $2,000.oo Believe it or not . |
:aimeeyork I got my Tiny Baci $1,500, not even direct from the breeder, (he was from a Pet shop) for the same price and our family loves him dearly...we could have gotten a differnt pup for far less but we fell in love with his temperment. I'm aware of puppy mills but my kids fell in love with Tiny and we just couldn't leave him there at the pet shop we had to take him home. he does not bark and he's 4 months old...only ocassionaly when he wants to sleep on my bed. Don't worry you'll be fine, I'm sure your pup will be worth every penny and will show you lots of love through many years :aimeeyork |
Great thread!! As always, I have to agree with Pat. I breed on a small scale and I am very particular when selecting Yorkies for my program and I too have paid a pretty penny for some over $2000....I myself tried to buy a bargin Yorkie and was burned several times. One time I the puppy I received was NOT the puppy I wanted to purchase, she was HUGE.. At 4 months she was 5 pounds..AAAND..I never did get her papers. I placed her in a pet home whom I still keep in contact with because she was sweet but now she weighs almost 10 pounds..LOL The other experience I had was I bought a puppy with sever LP (luxating platellas) in both knees at 12 wks. I want to be fair but I can't compromise my prices to do so. One thing that I have to do that costs me mucho money is take my expecting moms to my clinic's mid-wife 1 day before whelp and leave her there for laber watch..that costs me $85 a day...not including the costs for a c-section or assisted whelp to bring the pups into this world. I work full time so I can't be home and up all hours of the night waiting for the pups..besides, I am too worried I'd do somthing wrong when assisting with the delivery of the pups. I am very proud of my puppies they range anywhere from $1200-$3000..depending on the quality...you can see my latest litter of 5 girls at www.stellaryorkies.com The best thing to do is visit as many breeders as you can and talk to them. Sounds like the breeder you bought your baby from is very caring and kind. Those are hard to find. I commend your breeder. I always like to offer to anyone looking for a Yorkie to email me or call me with any questions. Even if I don't have something that suits you. I'd be happy to offer suggestions or referring friends of mine that I trust. On my links page of my site, I have included some rescue organizations that have sweet babies needing loving homes too. Thanks for this thread!! I think it's very informative to everyone who has bought or wants to buy a Yorkie puppy!! Yorkie hugs, Irene |
If I were breeding I would be even more particular about where I got my yorkie. But, she is just going to be a pet. I have no idea if she is even near show quality. The only thing I did not like about my breeder is that she sends pups home, if they are eating well and not too small, at 8 weeks. My puppy seems to young to be away from siblings and mom. She tries to suck on our ear lobes, and she is 10 weeks, almost 11!! |

I paid $366 all together when I got Biddy spayed. Is neutering cheaper than spaying since it is less invasive? |
Neutering is cheaper. A couple of different vets quoted me the same price, essentially. Don't we have to tell the vets that we want them to use a specific kind of anesthetic with yorkies? |
I paid 1200 for my female so 1500 is probably not a bad price in your area. |
