Have you / would you change a dog's name? I'm sure the situation happens a lot- people get a dog from a rescue or previous owner and get stuck with a weird name like "Mr. Flufferpants," or anything that just REALLY doesn't... click well with you. :P A lot of dogs learn their names early, so what do you do when you just fall in love with a dog but can't stand the name the original owner gave it? Re-name-train it or just deal with it? |
Retrain it, it's easy. You can always use old name in a pinch or when you mean business! You should love saying your dog's name. Your dog's able to learn many names including nicknames. Nancy |
I agree, I think the dog would learn the new name! Is your dogs name Mr. Flufferpants? LOL |
I think that a new name would be fine, IF the dog seems to respond to it. Sometimes it is easier to change a puppies name than a dog who has had the same name for years. ........ I really think "Mr. Flufferpants" is a great name! :D |

I've gotten several rescue or abandaned dogs in my life and didn't know their name so I've always just gave them a name I liked and have had no problems with it.:) Dogs can learn a new name easily. |
Yeah, I if didn't like the name i'd change it. |
I would change the name...That means new and better times are ahead..No links to the past :) |
I would change it, and I have changed a dogs name at the age of one year and one month. We adopted a one year old and his name was Keke. We changed his name to Harry and he was very responsive in a matter of days. I reccomend it if you are thinking about it. |
I changed Maggies name from Kacee to Maggie and she did just fine. I didnt even use part of the first name at all. I totally dropped it and started calling her maggie. She knows her now good now too. |
I've given many a rescue Yorkie a name simply because they did not come with one. The responded quickly to their new name, and seemed to enjoy it too. I've heard that if you get a rescue that has been abused, mistreated or didn't have attention that it should have, you should change it's name, otherwise it will be a bad association. I don't know just how true this is, but when I heard this I changed a couple fosters names. |

Agreed. I don't think it's a problem, especially if you choose a name that sounds similiar to the one they had. I adopted a rescue Husky named "Doobie". I changed her name to "Ruby". No problems at all. |
My Jasmine was originally known as Lily (I purchased her when she was around 7 months old). Jasmine is a little over 2 years old now. My Butch was originally known as Jesse (I purchased him when he was around 4 months old). Butch is a little over 1 year old now. They both respond to their new names... :) |
Piper was a Bessie before we got her. I think because she was born in Kansas & had the same colors as their bessie cows. The breeder started calling her Piper after we purchased her. We got her 2 weeks later. |
I would change the name if I didn't like it...when you get an adult dog from a rescue or shelter you don't know what their call name is so you name them what you like..they will get used to it... |
When dogs are rescued on Animal Planet Animal Cops they always change their name. They say it is a new name for a new begining. When I bought my puppy, her owner had been calling her Hannah and she even had a collar with her name on it. I left her name Hannah because I think it looks like her and my best friends daughters name is Hannah. |
When Maggie came to us at age 1 1/2 she was Baby. We already had Bailey and so we changed her to Maggie. She learned it faster than we did. |
Mr Flufferpants - while cute - doesn't have much ring does it? I couldn't imagine having to call it out at the park to get my Dog to come back LOL LOL :D  Dixie responds to half a dozen names because I'm always calling her something different. There's Dixie, Dougal (Yes, she responds to Dougal - I'm trying to untrain that one!), Little, Wee, Evil Wee, Lil Butt, WeebaLow, Dixel-berries. Yes I know it's probably bad obedience to use so many names but she does come to just about anything! LOL! And when I want to call them both back I use "Yorkies!" or "york-a-lorks", or even some words which I won't post because they're rude! But it works. :D So I guess my advice is - just go for it. Try treating a lot and saying the dog's new name, use the name whenever you pat the dog or cuddle the dog and he'll soon come to associate the name with good things! |
I wouldn't hesitate to change a name if it didn't suit me or the dog. I got my Gypsy at age 3 yrs. and her name was Gazette. It just didn't feel right to me so I changed it to Gypsy, she had no problems adjusting to it. :) |
names I have changed dogs names a number of times...I have had to when I got one with the same name as one of mine already in my house. Dogs don't really care what you call them, just so you call them... |

My sister changed her dogs name wo a prob. I would change it if you didn't like the original name. |
1 Attachment(s) I got Carley at 6 months and her name was Betsy. I couldn't see this cutie as being a Betsy at all. She was answering to Carley within the week. |
If you think Mr. Flufferpants is bad -- Levi's name was Frankenstein -- I had to change that -- his fathers name is Freddy Kreger |

when i got brandi from the rescue they didnt know her name as she was found on the streets of london but they named her bubble, we didnt like the name and she didnt know it anyway so i went through saying loads of names and when i said brandi she looked up so we gave her that name:D |
LOL at flufferpants, I would change that real quick, Kodak was boy#3 when I called for him. :D |
We changed both our Yorkies' names! We got Eddie at about 10 weeks from someone who was allergic to him. His name was Teddy, or TJ for short. Since TJ is my wife's ex's name, we changed to something that rhymed with Teddy. Our 10-year-old rescue was named Cuddles when we got him. We didn't make it home from the rescue place before I changed it to Jack, after Jack Daniels, a friend of mine, lol. We called him JackCuddles for a while until he got used to it. Never had a problem with it. |
I have never rescued but I would change the name that is more comfortable for me unless the dog is attached to the name... the dog might want to change the name as a new beginning.. |
