is it bad to buy a 4yr old yorkie??
 
i am trying to find my mom a new dog right now and we went to the pound and there was the cutest little yorkie, the only thing was it was already 4 years old. i dont know if that is good to buy one that age or not???? please help

There is nothing wrong with adopting a four year old dog. You do need to find out why that dog is in the pound though. I hope someone nice takes it home. It must be especially scary for a little dog to be in a place like that.

I have placed many adults..most were retired from breeding..etc. I have found a Yorkie at any age will respond well in a loving home. Never had one not adjust as long as they were well doted on...
The only problem I have with some people is they are not upfront about why they are placing an adult...some are problems people want to be rid of like a non-stop barker, biter, not housetrained, health issues etc..find out the details.

You found a Yorkie at the pound?? Lucky you! Yes, a four-year-old has many good years left. Yorkies live on an average of 12-16 years. The pound people test to see if it's aggressive and won't adopt them out if the dog is too aggressive. It may or not be housebroken, but I have found older dogs to be much easier to train the puppies. Hope it's still there, if you decide to get it.

I am going back tomorrow to try and find everything out....i just dont understand...who could give away a yorkie?!?!?!?!

I agree with that! There's not many problems that cannot be fixed with a little (okay a LOT:p!) of patience. love, and some time. I would adopt any Yorkie that I could:laugh:

Good grief, I would go get it. Yorkies are surrendered for the stupidest reasons into a pound, ie moving, new baby can't cope with dog, new boyfriend/girlfriend don't have time for the dog, decided to go travelling and need to 'get rid of the dog'. All of which gets my back way up.
It is possible there were some problems however, in my experience, 99% of the time the problem originated with the owner being stupid.

People have many different opinions on the age of a dog...but i think it doesnt really matter....as long as you like the dog and it's personality-than your fine. On the other hand...some people think that it is more difficult to train a dog if it is at an older age....good luck in your decission and let me knoe if your going to adopt the yorkie :thumbup:

I think it is easier to buy an older dog. Your well past the puppy stage and you know what you are getting size and personality wise. When we bought Tugboat I was actually looking at a 6 year old girl who was tiny. ( I thought I wanted a tiny Yorkie), but my husband didn't want to get a dog so old. I know things worked out for the best because I now know that I don't want a tiny after all. If she is what you want who cares about her age. There is no guarantee with a younger dog either. I have see people get puppies and then the puppy passes away when they are 2 or 3. You can't trust time, but you can trust your heart and if she is right for you then go for it, even if you get less years with her than you would a puppy it will be worth it if she has your heart. Does that make sense?

Yes you do make sense. I have had people contact me looking particularly for an older dog as they don't want a puppy and go through all the puppy stuff. An older dog still requires a certain amount of training when arriving into a new home but some people just like an adult instead.

i agree
my brownie is 4 and hes still like having a puppy minus the peeing lol

I had a grooming client who got both her Yorkies at the Humane Society...they were 12 weeks..named then Romeo and Juliette...why some one would surrender two perfectly fine 12 weeks olds is beyond me...made no sense.

It would be awesome if you could adopt one from the pound. It's hard to say how it ended up there, but I'm sure it will make a wonderful long-term pet. :)

Most of the time , peoples don't think twice before producing a litter . Unfortunately , several of those little ones end up in shelters .
