What kind of coat does my puppy have? I have a new yorkie puppy. She is 15 weeks old and I have had her for 4 weeks. Her coat has grown alot but it is very fuzzy, especially on her back. Her color is still black but the roots on her back and head look silver. I am wanting to know if could be her puppy coat and maybe it will get silky or if her coat will always be fuzzy. I bathe and conditoner her once a week. I have tried leaving a little conditoner in and that helped a little. About 3-4 days after her bath her hair on her head is really oily and the hair on her back looks a little better. When do they loose their puppy coat? Does she need to be groomed to get the puppy coat off? I think it is soo cute but it matts very easy. Any suggestions? |

It sounds like she MAY have a cotton coat, but it's really hard to tell without pictures. I'm sure someone more experienced can probably tell you if you post a picture. Coco has silky coat and even in her puppy months, she never had fluffy or fuzzy coat that matted easily. But my friends yorkie had a coat like you describe and her yorkie is almost 3 now and she still has a cotton coat. |

If it mats easily, it's probably a cotton coat. Usually silky coats only mat when dogs are wearing clothes for long periods Nancy |

no help but my Troy is 11wks and her coat looks NOTHING like that.... :confused: shoo Hannah's coat looks like my fro!!!:eyetearss hopefully someone will come along and tell you what is up with her coat!:thumbup: |
Got an idea Hey Genie.....do the flashlight test......does her eyes shine green or red? See my question in another thread that may help you decide the type of coat your little Yorkie has.... Good luck |
Her eyes doesn't flash or they are greyish blue? I don't know. She is a mystery to me. But I love her anyway. I think she is so cute. |

I showed the pic to my hubby and he thought it was maggie :) I don't think Maggies hair looks like that on her back, as far as the texture goes, but they do have the same coloring. very VERY cute!!! How old is your baby again? I guess I could look at the original post. But Maggie is now 13 weeks old and looks a little different than she used to. the second pic of her was taken last night... |

She is adorable! I love that little face -- but that coat....hmmmm. I don't know if it is damaged, cottony, or wiry. I guess it could just be an in-between stage as the puppy down is coming out. Not sure. Are you brushing her dry? Need to be sure to spray with a detangler/grooming type mix before brushing. Maybe order some Missing Link supplement? Fish oil? It seems dry, is the skin flaky at all? What food are you using? If it is a wiry coat, a breeder I know has a beautiful silky coated female that she told me had a wiry coat that looked horrible for her first several months. Hopefully one of the breeders will check in this thread and be able to give you a better idea of what to expect or what you might be able to do to help. |
What a beautiful baby!! Don't know about her coat; but even wooly coats make the cutest dogs, just harder to work with. Sawyer has always had a thin coat; but now it is starting to grow, and it is very silky; but he still is my little gremlin! Enjoy your baby, she is precious;) |
She is PRECIOUS!! Genie, she is super adorable..............LOVE the pic of her kissing your daughter. Your baby looks like my boy at that age. He had a little bit less hair. It turns out he is a true silky coat. His hair was like her back then..........but now it's turning quite glossy and shiny. He has a thin coat though ;) When I take pics of his face...........his eyes glow green (not sure what that means as opposed to red). Here he is at around your baby's age and now at 6 months. .........Almost forgot to ask you genie, can you tell us what you feed your baby? Also, I started my boy on The Missing Link supplement and I swear by it. My poodle has the softest hair and so does even my cat.........lol If you are not already doing so, I highly recommend it to you. I feed my kids Life's Abundance food :) Jess |

There are only 3 types for dogs. The regular, the plus (contains glucosamine for added joint support) and the plus vet strength ;) The avian and feline are for birds and cats only :D Anyhow, I have been giving my yorkie boy missing link plus since he was 12 weeks. I mix it with cottage cheese and it's a treat for him ;) I feed the poodle the vet strength plus because she has arthritis in her hind legs. I think that the regular missing link would be perfect for her. I would start her off with a 1/4 teaspoon the first few days and then gradually increase to 1/2 teaspoon and if you want........you may give her the full teaspoon :) I give my boy a whole teaspoon with a teaspoon cottage cheese each day :p |

coat She looks like she will be some degree of silk to me, the coat reflects too muc light to be cotton IMO...you need to get a fine tooth metal, comb and comb to the roots...remove the puppy fuzz...if you can not let a groomer do it. If you are leaving in a conditioner, make sure it is not oil based, oil attracts dirt and mats the hair.. Coat Handlers is water based, made for Yorkie coats......it is best to rinse out the conditioner and use a conditioning spray when brushing her daily. I still think silk will be her adult coat...her puppy coat does not look matted..it may tangle, but does it mat in huge knots so tight you can not remove them,.only cut them out? |

coat Sometimes dead hair becomes tangled with new, healthy coat...it is done by combing it out, not cutting it off...the dead hair is not at the ends, but tangled in the roots..if you can comb her down to the skin, then all dead hair is gone..Yorkies lose hair the way humans so..they do not shed, but the dead hair comes out when we brush it...never bathe a knotted puppy..you will never get the mats out...just keep brushing and combing as you a are doing and use good shampoos and conditioners... |

My son asked me one day if these two were really the same kind of dogs. I had to laugh because they are very different (small male with shorter legs and bigger ears, and a larger female with longer legs and small ears) but I think they will compliment each other well. It is like a mystery, waiting to see how they will look as adults. I don't think there are many dogs that change so drastically. I love Yorkies! |

My Nico has never had a cotton-like coat. It's real fine but his skin is dry! The vet suggested some kind of vitamin e-like pills to help moisturize his skin. And my mother keeps asking me when is his hair going to grow! I think it's grown some since I've gotten him! And whenever I put an elastic in his head he somehow gets it out ALONG with a wad of hair! Perhaps if I keep doing that I won't have to wonder what kind of coat he will have...he will be bald! lol...So I wonder about this, also. |
