Yorkie Runt Question
 
Hi everyone~I'm new to yorkie talk and have a question about my new baby Zoe. I went to visit the breeder and picked her out when she was 5 weeks old. At that time she was only 6 ounces! Since she was so small the breeder left her to nurse until 7 weeks old. She is 8 weeks now and 2 lbs. I have seen the yorkie growth chart (which says she should be 6 lbs fully grown) but the breeder said since she was so tiny at birth and even at 5 weeks that she should end up around 4 lbs. If anyone is able to help me figure out a general idea of how big she would be it would be much appreciated! :)

Try not to worry about the size so much as her personality and if it is what you are looking for. Be aware that the breeder should not be using such terms as "teacup" "toy" or the sickly "micro mini" - these are not part of the breed standard, where the weight should be no more than 7 pounds for a Yorkshire Terrier.

Also be weary of how small she will be as it is a lot more work and worry. They say my girl will be 3-4 pounds and I am hoping for 4 or more, I want her to be as healthy as possible!

Like Kimbers said don't worry about the size too much because the smaller the more worries.....by what you told me your yorkie adult weight will be probably 7 lbs but thats still small for a pet....Do you have something in writing from the breeder or if it means that much make a phone call it can't hurt JMO

I am not super worried about her size - she has a wonderful personality, and I know thats what counts. The breeder did not use any of those terms, and I definately understand that teacup, etc are just descriptive words and are ploys for breeders to charge more. The breeder I got Zoe from did charge me slightly more for her because they expected her to be smaller than the rest of their pups, so that is why I am trying to figure out how big she will get. If she will be around 6 lbs I am going to get a bit of my money back, since they sold her for more because of her size. Thanks for the quick reply though! :)

Yorkie-mommy : i cant see her getting to be 7 lbs when she was only 6 ounces at 5 weeks old...what is your basis behind your opinion? thanks for the help

First off, welcome to YT!

The growth chart you saw is just an estimate. There is no way to know exactly how much your pup will weigh full grown. The breeder can also only make an estimate. I've heard of really small furbabies becoming 7 or 8 pounds. It just depends on if they get a growth spurt or not.

My pup was 1.6 pounds at 9 weeks old when I got him (his two brothers were also small). His parents were 5 and 7 pounds, but he is almost 8 months old now and only just over 3 pounds. :cool: I'm hoping he gets another growth spurt, but there's just no telling. I spoke with the breeder a few days ago, and my pup's brothers are both 4-5 pounds now.

Some have a slower start at their growth. There is no exact science to telling how much a pup will weigh full-grown. But if your pup is 2lbs at 8 weeks, that's not that small.

Hello and welcome to YT!! Congrats on your new puppy!

1st off I will say that size is just a # and even if your baby gets to be 10lbs, I'm sure you will love her just as much!

I think what your breeder did was wrong by charging you a little extra for her cause she "thinks" she will be smaller! What if she does reach 6lbs? Will she give you the extra money back that she charged you? To me that was a red flag on that breeder and I'm afraid I would have walked.

any way, I'm sure you will love her so much and I know she will bring you much joy! Thats what Yorkies do!

2 lbs at 8 weeks is pretty big, my girl is almost 10 months and weighs 3 lbs

yeah, she's not super tiny - although 2 lbs seems small to me, i guess its not small for a yorkie. Just makes me a little annoyed, since I specifically got her because she was small and of course because of her personality.

Do you think the breeder will give you some money back if its not the size she stated?

My girl weighed 2 pound 8 ounces at 16 weeks.... she's 17 weeks now but I think she looks bigger than that. I'm sure she'll have a growth spurt!

WOW if she grew that fast in 3 weeks she should have stretch marks! 2 lbs. at 8 weeks is a good sized girl. It really doesn't matter how much she weighed at birth, one of my smallest pups ended up being my largest adult. You just can't tell! It's wrong for a breeder to charge more for a smaller pup but when the pup is under 12 weeks old it's ridiculous! Most likely once the competition for food let up the little one was able to eat enough to catch up. I'd definitely look into getting some money back. Just enjoy your baby, 6 lbs. is a great size and only God knows what size she'll really end up being.

it shocks me that she went from 6 ounces at 5 weeks to 2 lbs at 8 weeks...is that a normal growth spurt? :confused:
