Am I the only one who DOESN'T want to take their dog shopping? I've done it twice and swore I'd never do it again. LOL!! He won't go in a carrier, he throws up in the car, he barks loudly at other dogs, he pees in the aisles, I can't carry him with packages in my arms, he gets tangled in his harness, people want to (gasp) touch him, I'm afraid he's going to get stepped on and basically it's just not a fun experience for me. :p I used to dread going to the mall with my two kids when they were really young. By the time we all got ready and the diaper bag packed I was to tired to go out. Nope I LOVE being able to shop without kids and dog in tow!;) |
I don't want to take my dogs shopping - but not for the same reasons that you don't. Most of the places (especially grocery stores) have a no pet policy - and I totally disagree with sneaking dogs into places that don't allow dogs. Secondly - I'm not much of a shopper - so when I do shop - I just want to go and get it done. I don't really consider it a time to take my dog along. I don't like to take my dogs out in public to "show them off." (A lot of people do.) I love to take my dogs visiting friends, neighbors, and relatives. And, we all love to going to the lake and occasionally to parks. These are the sort of places I take my dogs. I saw a bunch of kids at the mall a few months ago - passing a little pup back and forth - acting and behaving like "young teenagers" do. I can't imagine their parents letting them take a young puppy out like that. It looked tired.....and they were feeding it things that they were eating. Not good! This little pup was being passed around so much - I don't even know whose dog it was. Carol Jean |
All I want to say is LMAO !!! Poor Brutus - look at it this way - he's a GUY - they aren't susposed to LIKE Shopping I take my girls to only a few places and only on days I have the energy. Cheri likes to be carried and Chanel likes to skip around....so really - I need 3 arms - BUT I love taking each out alone when I can - that doesn't happen too much cause the one left behind cries(even with big sister Tessa ...) The other thing I noticed is the more I take them with me the more they EXPECT to go on every trip and I can't take the pouting faces when I have to leave them behind |

Yeah I guess Brutus isn't a shopper! LOL!! |
i don't take my babies anywhere except to the vet sometimes. Thhey don't like to ride, they vomit usually all the way there and back. they get so nervouse they shake. i don't see the point of putting them thru it. their welfare is first and foremost. My babies also go naked. Why/ because theey HATE clothes and I am not going to punish them by making them wear them. besides, I love to look at their pretty coats every time I look down. i think they are just beautiful. |
Brutus is a doll baby... ....whether he wants to be, or not! :p Thanks for the montage. Enjoyed it. I would like to take Abigail with me, just 'cause I'm one of those who thought one of the perks of getting a toy breed would be taking her with me (almost) everywhere. Reality is: not too many places allow for dogs shopping :( with us. If it isn't a good experience for BOTH the person and the pup, though; it isn't worth the effort! I do think taking our pups out helps socialize them better than if they are stay-at-home pups. I want Abigail not to be afraid of people, and not shake everytime she gets in the car for fear it's a trip to the vet. |
Only to pet friendly places! I never sneak Ginger in anywhere, BUT, I'd feel guilty leaving her home when I went to PetValu and PetSmart. She really loves going to PetValu, can't wait to get in the door, and doesn't want to leave! Oh, and we had lunch on the patio of a pet-friendly restaurant in Gettysburg once! |
Isn't it funny how they can be SO different...my Daisy LOVES to go anywhere... of course I only take her to dog friendly places and never where there is food. But she has been to friends, family, the vet, some stores and to the airport (to pick up daddy) and we have flown to CO and CA and next week we are flying to TX! Daisy loves it... BUT in the car... she refuses to be in her carrier... it's either on mommies lap or mommie holding her so she can see out the window... guess I am really glad that she's only 1.13lbs right now... |
 At first I thought dressing them in a little t-shirt would be cute but not anymore...I also enjoy looking at their beautiful coat. Quote:

The only place I will take mine shopping with me, is to Petsmart. I have taken him in restaurants a couple of times, but he was in a sherpa bag. Once when I was traveling, and another time right after Katrina. I hated doing that, but was put up against leaving him in the car, or taking him inside with the sherpa bag. NO way is he staying in the car. I've even sat outside with him, and let others go in to eat on one trip, cause I didn't have a sherpa bag then, and wasn't going to sneak him in. If I'm traveling (I go to Tx to see mom about 3-4 times a year), I will always carry him in anywhere I go, of course in the sherpa bag. I never try to sneak him in anywhere. Next trip to Tx, going to be quite interesting, now that I have 2 yorkies! |
Lets see........Cody screams all the way there in the car, snaps, bites and growls at any one who tries to pet him, pees in the aisle if not on me before we get there and screams all the way home. I am with you......my shopping experience is less stressful when he stays at home and I think we are both happier!!!!! |
Heck no you're not the only one! I don't want to take my dog...any of them...shopping either! For lots of reasons. |

I only take Sadie in the car for vet appointments, obedience classes, and to visit friends. She absolutely HATES riding in the car - shivers, shakes, vomits - it's a nightmare!!! |
I'm glad I'm not alone!:D |
Now this is what make the world a great place. We are all different and we all accept each others way of doing things. And all our yorkies are different. Some are home bodies, and some love to go, go, go. I just took both my dogs to the groomer this morning, my mixed breed-Sugar-does NOT like to go anywhere and has been in a terrible panic. My yorkie-LillyBelle-on the other hand, LOVES to go ANYWHERE ANYTIME and I love to take her. She has a shhh purse, where she stays perfectly quiet, she has regular purses for occasions when we are out to Lowes, etc, and her harness for walking in the park or going on picnics. I do dress her on occasion-and she LOVES the attention she gets-she really turns into a "different person" just expecting attention from anyone coming near. My mixed breed, is completely happy to be home and a bandana is the only acceptable attire to her. |
I don't take Joey shopping either. He enjoys riding in the car and goes with me when I have to drop off my human kids somewhere. Otherwise, he only goes to places intended for dogs. I absolutely do NOT understand the thrill of taking dogs to places where they aren't supposed to be. Maybe other people like the way having dogs with them makes them the center of attention? I don't. |

i dont take brownie or kayko places because they just dont enjoy it but austin was born to shop he loves to hang out watch everyone go by soon as i put my jacket on or get his stroller he RUNs to the door i wouldnt take him if he wasnt well behaved hes quiet potty trained and friendly & i love to have him with me we only go places that allow us |
I don't even like to take my skin babies, let alone my furbaby!!!! |
All dogs are different, just as all pet owners are different. There is no steadfast rule. My 2 dogs love to go anywhere. They love to ride in the car, take walks, and ride in their stroller at the mall. They are both good as gold and never give me a bit of trouble when we are out. Therefore it is a very enjoyable experience for all of us. If my dogs behaved the way some have posted their dogs do when they are out, I would never take mine out either. But mine are little angels and love to go out. I think this is because they have gone almost everyone with me since day one. My baby Yorkie wears clothes because she loves them and is always cold. My Shih Tzu wears only coats and sweaters when it is cold. Someone posted they do not like to "show their dogs off"--I do. I love when people fuss over my babies, and they (my dogs) love it too. I honestly think the reason they are so friendly and adapt so easily to new places and people is because they are so used to being out and about and meeting new people and animals. My Shih Tzu has more frequent flyer miles under her belt from flying them many humans have! LOL!! |
I would like to be able to take him with me, because I feel bad leaving him alone during the day, then needing to go shopping at night. However, he wont go in a carrier and I can't shop and carry him the whole time. Plus, like you said, I don't like to be stopped by a hundred people goo'ing over him. So even if I did take him, I don't enjoy it. |
"He won't go in a carrier, he throws up in the car, he barks loudly at other dogs, he pees in the aisles, I can't carry him with packages in my arms, he gets tangled in his harness, people want to (gasp) touch him, I'm afraid he's going to get stepped on and basically it's just not a fun experience for me." If my dogs behaved the same way, YES I'd rather leave them at home too! ;) It's no fun at that point. |
I dont think We are the ones needing the attention--we enjoy our yorkies' company, and love to see how happy it makes them. If I still had children with me, I probably wouldnt enjoy it as much...but after years with a van full of boys, friends, sports equipment, ball games, parties, endless carpooling, room mother, team mother, on and on...now everyone's grown up...My husband and I both enjoy the company of our Little LillyBelle. |
I don't take my dogs shopping with me simply because I don't like people touching my dogs. You don't know how clean their hands are. Also, there are a lot of diseases that are air born. True, that's why you should have your dogs vaccinated but what about people that don't keep up with that. Just the other day, took the pups in for a wellness check. When I was leaving, a mother and her son (around 6 years) were in the waiting room. Boy walks up. I told him (as did his mother), you can look but DO NOT TOUCH THE PUPS. His hands went right in the box to touch them. I was furious. I snatched the box up out of his reach, paid and walked right out. Even my 6 year old knows when to touch and when not to! |
There are occasions when we like to show our dogs off ;).... ....there are times when I just want them along for their company.... ....there are places that I take them because I think it will be good for them to go, to help keep them "socialized", and less nervous in different environments... ...but the MAJORITY of the time, when it comes to just "errands" like shopping, stuff like eating out...I COMPLETELY don't understand the appeal of sneaking a dog along. I'm worried enough about sneaking my SNACKS into the movies, I don't need to worry about my purse barking, too! :p If people like taking their pets places with them, and their pets like going, that's great. But I think there's also something to be said for encouraging our pets (like our children!) to be independent of us sometimes too. It's healthier for them, and easier on them at the inevitable times when we CAN'T take them along, if they're not used to ALWAYS going. |
nope, nope, nope. I dont care to take my dogs with me. they go to the vet and then after a vet visit if I need something from Dollar general, Ive stopped there once with Maggie to get a few cleaning things. other than that, they've been to pet depot a couple times each. But sometimes hubby and I are going some place maybe he or I just gonna run in for something and we let them go and the other stays in the truck with one of us. they do really love riding and their so good in the truck when we take them with us. a few times Ive let them ride with me to the service station which is about 2 miles from my house, maybe liek 3 or 4 times. we also take them riding on our property, around the lake and up our road in the golf cart when its nice out. They absolutely love it. Other than that. they stay at home. I also dont care about clothes on them. They each now have one pair of pjs and one sweater, I let them sleep in the pjs on the really cold nights as seems like they sleep later snuggled in them and their blankets. the sweaters I mostly have just to dress em up and make a few pics of them then take them right off. I dont go shopping much except when hubby goes with me and he sure isnt into taking dogs since he dont even like shopping. I love them to peices but I dont have to take them and show them off and I do think that is why SOME people take theirs with them, not as much for the dog but for their ego or something. Not saying everyone but some I believe do it for that reason. |
I did a lot of my shopping the other night, and I left Rocky at home with the boyfriend. I had to go into a couple stores that weren't pet-friendly, then I went to Best Buy and Old Navy, but I wasn't going to drive 20mins back home to get him. Plus, my hands were full, I had so many items I don't think I would've been able to carry him too. |
I think this is different depending on every person. First I like to take my girl everywhere I can. She really enjoys it and understands when I am getting ready to go somewhere. She also expects to go every time and how could I leave her behind? I remember when I was a child and wanted to go somewhere and was left behind it really sucked. I also its a great way to socialize a dog and expose it not so common thing it otherwise would be affraid of. As far as going out to show of , some people believe it or not don't like this breed, others can careless and some may not even like pets period. For those who like to show off its fine by me if your are proud of the upkeep your pet has and how well taken care of it is you as the owner and caretaker deserve all the attention and recognition you can get as not many pet owners take it seriously and care for their dogs as meticulously as others do so the show-off part is justified to me and everyone does whatever rocks their boat.:animal36 |
I love to have Siu Pao be with me all the time if its comfortable for him because I wouldn't compromise that. When its not too cold and I am going out, I bring him with me. We take the streetcar and walk from shop to shop and if there is one that doesn't allow pets, I can't bring him home and go back so I put him in his bag. He is very quiet in his bag and once I am out from that shop, I let him out. Sometimes it gets too much to carry him and the stuffs I buy especially having no car but I know he'd rather come with me than stay at home so I bring him, his carrier bag and a backpack for the stuffs I am buying.Maybe a stroller would make my life easier in the future but I'd consider that after the winter. As for car rides, its a whole different story...he has motion sickness so he is only in the car when he goes to the vet. If I am going anywhere by car, I let him stay at home because I think it is more comfortable for him than being out. |
