A question about puppies hair. Hi I'm Mochas mom I have noticed his hair is getting thin on top, He is only 12 weeks old. Should this be happening? Is this normal. It's only on top. Please help me. All advice is appreciated. God Bless, and Merry Christmas.

HI....my Cooper is 6 months old and he started getting thin on top about 2 1/2 months ago. I'm chalking it up to him getting his adult coat in cause his hair started changing colors a little before that also. I think its normal but look forward to reading what the veterans say.

i had the same worry with Remy! i thought he started balding at about 4 months at the top of his head, but people say its normal for some dogs and it could be his hair turning lighter so it looks thinning out. i had a thread about it a few months back about him balding. i asked my vet and she said i had nothing to worry about it. Remy's face has turned really lighter than the rest of his body, but i assume thats normal as well. but check w/your vet and see if they have any ideas why. dont worry though, maybe your furbaby is just stressing out!

| if she has black normally and it starts getting white roots it will look much thinner than it is. I've been thru this with Kizzy. So I think it might just be the process some go thru because kizzys hair is so much thicker now.

When my pup was that age - I thought he was going bald on the top of his head also - and so did everyone else. But, upon closer examination, I discovered that the roots of his hair on the top of his head were coming in almost white -- and, this gave the appearance that we were looking at his scalp. (He was actually changing to the light golden color that he is now.) Shame on me - but one evening, I was dying my hair its usual dark brown color, and I thought I'd give my puppy a little dye job on the top of his head. I smeared some of the goop on the top of his head and literally carried him around for 15 minutes - so, he couldn't wipe it or smear it with his paws and then carefully rinsed it off. And lo and behold - the hair on his head was darker, and he no longer looked bald at all. (But - like a lot of little Yorkie pups - he did have rather thin hair - but that has certainly changed. He's 14 months old now and has a wonderful thick coat of hair.) SO - check the roots of your puppy's hair..... it may be thin - but it is probably just changing color making it look like he is almost bald... Carol Jean

Thanks everyone for your help I just want to say Thank you for responding to my question. It really helped me. The vet said it is usual for puppies to lose their baby hair. New will soon grow in to replace the bald spot. You have all been a great help and I appreciate your responses. Thank you and God Bless. Mocha and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
