????? Regarding Getting A Male Puppy
 

I have a male and a female. My male is neutered and my female is spayed. He does not mark in the house but will mark outside. He was easier to potty train than my female

I do think males have a tendency to hike their leg in places you might not necessarily want them to - for whatever reason.

I've had mostly male dogs and I always have a problem with them "going" when I take them to someone else's house.

We had one female and didn't have that problem with her. My daughter has a male (neutered) Boston and he lifts his leg on EVERYTHING.

Our Rowdy is not neutered and he marks in the house. We have wood and concrete floors and he is little, he just sprinkles a few drops, so we can live with it - but we have not been sucessful in getting him to stop.

Our Rexy, on the other hand, was neutered at 6 months and he does not mark and does not go in the house.

We got Rexy a year after Rowdy and Rexy was soooo easy to break because he just followed Rowdy outside and went potty too. He "knew" when we took him out in the grass to "go". Anyway, my point is that little boys can be problematic - but we have one that is and one that is not. :rolleyes:

Good luck on your decision - Rex & Rowdy love each other to pieces - oh they chase and growl and play fight - but they do EVERYTHING together and I wish we had gotten a second one sooner.

my boy harley has been so easy so far (knock on wood) he is 5 months so he has not been neutered yet and hasnt started lifting his leg (knock on wood again) :)

I have a six month old boy and he has been pretty easy to train. It just takes alot of patience and persistance. We have had him going outside since day one and with the exception of a handful of accidents (which of course is normal with puppies) he has been great. He has lifted his leg outside a couple of times, but only so he didnt pee on himself....it didn't look like a purposeful thing like marking. So I'm all for getting a boy....or a girl. Both are great.

For the most part - my two male dogs never mark around here.... I guess they think they already own this place.


But - sometimes, when they go to someone else's house or yard - they may mark ---- trying to take over ownership of that area also.

I have also noticed this with male dogs that visit here. They generally do not mark at their own house - but they will start marking every bush in my yard --

I guess this means we have to watch our little extra carefully when we take them visiting........

**** I deliberately got a male Yorkie so that he could wear bellybands and have full run of the house from the start. Also - I think he has been very good as far as potty training goes (he is trained to go outside only).

Teddy wasn't THAT hard to papertrain. He's 5 1/2 mos old and about 98% of the time now he goes on paper. It has been this way for the past 3 wks. At first it was hard, but like every puppy that's young but now Ithink he's getting it. I just got my first female ever so I don't know how hard they are to train.

Chewy was easy to train, he was trained by 4 months...He is 8 months now and is really good about not going in the house. I take him out every 2-3 hours...

How do you know if they mark outside??? Chewy goes out side but I have no idea if he is just peeing or if he is marking!!!! He squats when he pees and that is weird cause I htought boys lifted their legs... my lab ALWAYS lifted his leg...

I thought Andy was doing well. He was running around the first few days after I got him, marking things in the house, but then he quit. I thought "Wow, he was easy to train". But then the other day, he got into my oldest daughter's room. And went to marking. I think it is a matter of showing ownership. So I have been researcihng belly bands, sewed some up, and will make sure to have them with me if I take the kids anywhere that he doesn't already "own".

Well - when I have my two male dogs outside and another little boy who lives a couple houses away comes to visit - and they are all running around peeing on every tree, bush, and shrub they can find - and they've all pee'd about 20 times - so much only a drop can come out anymore --- that's marking!!!!!

Pee'ing is when they squat or go up to a bush and pee for a while (there is actually a good amount of pee - plus they haven't gone for a while - and they don't go for a while after this.... This is pee'ing.

I've had 4 male yorkies so far, and I've noticed that they paper train easily up to 6 months, then will start marking at that age. Having them neutered at around 6 months solved the problem of marking, but of course they lift their legs to pee outside.

When we take them to an unfamiliar house, they will mark to leave their scent. That's when we use the belly bands. Other than that, no problem.

My furboo is so GOOD!! He's about 11 weeks and since i've changed to the Grass scented pee pads potty training is so much better. I havent tried letting him 'find' it to go potty(I just got him on tues) but he'll get there. He wont go potty on anything that he even thinks he's not supposed to(except the carpet but that's another story.)

I had the same concerns,but i love my 8 mo. old Poli, pottytraining about the same, exept Rosi would never go on a pad, Poli he allways goes on a pad , the only problem i have with him sometimes after our every 2hr walk he holds out till we get in the house and races to the pad, but he only been doing that since the weather been bad. I found whenever a male gets in a new house they seem to want to put their scent there. I had Poli neuterd a little early and he has never hiked his leg anywhere ! You will love a little boy, i had to be talked into it too ! Good Luck and Merry Xmas !

The males in our family were far easier to train than the females. Cody went through a brief period where he wanted to mark in the house AFTER he was used as a stud, but stopped again when he was neutered.:)
