????? Regarding Getting A Male Puppy We never have had a male before and was wanting to know if it is more difficult to potty train them? Would it be harder because of having our girl Baby Blessing? I recall when my folks came to visit years back and brought their poodle he hiked his leg on our sofa, we had to confine him, to a small area while they were here visiting us :( We only had our Cassie then, they said he never did that at home and he was neutered too. We are still looking to get another yorkie and have been hesitate about getting a little male for these reasons, would like others opinions. Thank you so much. Patti & Jack and Baby Blessing |
I have a male and a female. My male is neutered and my female is spayed. He does not mark in the house but will mark outside. He was easier to potty train than my female |
I do think males have a tendency to hike their leg in places you might not necessarily want them to - for whatever reason. I've had mostly male dogs and I always have a problem with them "going" when I take them to someone else's house. We had one female and didn't have that problem with her. My daughter has a male (neutered) Boston and he lifts his leg on EVERYTHING. Our Rowdy is not neutered and he marks in the house. We have wood and concrete floors and he is little, he just sprinkles a few drops, so we can live with it - but we have not been sucessful in getting him to stop. Our Rexy, on the other hand, was neutered at 6 months and he does not mark and does not go in the house. We got Rexy a year after Rowdy and Rexy was soooo easy to break because he just followed Rowdy outside and went potty too. He "knew" when we took him out in the grass to "go". Anyway, my point is that little boys can be problematic - but we have one that is and one that is not. Good luck on your decision - Rex & Rowdy love each other to pieces - oh they chase and growl and play fight - but they do EVERYTHING together and I wish we had gotten a second one sooner. |
my boy harley has been so easy so far (knock on wood) he is 5 months so he has not been neutered yet and hasnt started lifting his leg (knock on wood again) :) |
I have a six month old boy and he has been pretty easy to train. It just takes alot of patience and persistance. We have had him going outside since day one and with the exception of a handful of accidents (which of course is normal with puppies) he has been great. He has lifted his leg outside a couple of times, but only so he didnt pee on himself....it didn't look like a purposeful thing like marking. So I'm all for getting a boy....or a girl. Both are great. |
For the most part - my two male dogs never mark around here.... I guess they think they already own this place. But - sometimes, when they go to someone else's house or yard - they may mark ---- trying to take over ownership of that area also. I have also noticed this with male dogs that visit here. They generally do not mark at their own house - but they will start marking every bush in my yard -- I guess this means we have to watch our little extra carefully when we take them visiting........ **** I deliberately got a male Yorkie so that he could wear bellybands and have full run of the house from the start. Also - I think he has been very good as far as potty training goes (he is trained to go outside only). Carol Jean |
Teddy wasn't THAT hard to papertrain. He's 5 1/2 mos old and about 98% of the time now he goes on paper. It has been this way for the past 3 wks. At first it was hard, but like every puppy that's young but now Ithink he's getting it. I just got my first female ever so I don't know how hard they are to train. |
Chewy was easy to train, he was trained by 4 months...He is 8 months now and is really good about not going in the house. I take him out every 2-3 hours... How do you know if they mark outside??? Chewy goes out side but I have no idea if he is just peeing or if he is marking!!!! He squats when he pees and that is weird cause I htought boys lifted their legs... my lab ALWAYS lifted his leg... How do you tell the diffrence? |
I thought Andy was doing well. He was running around the first few days after I got him, marking things in the house, but then he quit. I thought "Wow, he was easy to train". But then the other day, he got into my oldest daughter's room. And went to marking. I think it is a matter of showing ownership. So I have been researcihng belly bands, sewed some up, and will make sure to have them with me if I take the kids anywhere that he doesn't already "own". |
Well - when I have my two male dogs outside and another little boy who lives a couple houses away comes to visit - and they are all running around peeing on every tree, bush, and shrub they can find - and they've all pee'd about 20 times - so much only a drop can come out anymore --- that's marking!!!!! Pee'ing is when they squat or go up to a bush and pee for a while (there is actually a good amount of pee - plus they haven't gone for a while - and they don't go for a while after this.... This is pee'ing. Carol Jean |
I've had 4 male yorkies so far, and I've noticed that they paper train easily up to 6 months, then will start marking at that age. Having them neutered at around 6 months solved the problem of marking, but of course they lift their legs to pee outside. When we take them to an unfamiliar house, they will mark to leave their scent. That's when we use the belly bands. Other than that, no problem. |
My furboo is so GOOD!! He's about 11 weeks and since i've changed to the Grass scented pee pads potty training is so much better. I havent tried letting him 'find' it to go potty(I just got him on tues) but he'll get there. He wont go potty on anything that he even thinks he's not supposed to(except the carpet but that's another story.) |

The males in our family were far easier to train than the females. Cody went through a brief period where he wanted to mark in the house AFTER he was used as a stud, but stopped again when he was neutered.:) |
kirby was potty trained at 13 weeks but he still marks |
My male Yorkie mix is almost 3 years old and he has never marked in the house. He was neutered at 4 months. He was MUCH easier to potty train than my female. |
I would never get another male dog. I have always found females easier to housebreak and more affectionate. Have patience and you will find your female. |
I have a male yorkie and he was fully potty trained by 6 months. I don't have any problems with him marking in inappropriate places. And potty training aside, he's just the most loveable little snuggle bug on the planet! I love having a boy yorkie! |
Pete was pretty good about going on his pads from day one. We got him at 12wks and he already had an idea of what they were, with just a few treats each time he went in the right spot he had it down in no time. He's the sweetest little boy who would prefer to lay on my lap all day and give constant kisses:p ! |
I have a 9 month old boy. Neutered. I've read about the difficulties many of you have had housebreaking and I have been very fortunate(Knock on wood!)in my efforts. I have had him for 3 months and he is outside trained, has not had an accident in the house in a month. He sits by the door to go out and has never marked anywhere. I watch him like a hawk and he is crated when we're not home. He just started lifting his leg outside but falls over 1/2 the time! He has a wonderful temperment and has adjusted to all new situations with calmness aand curiosity. He truly has a Lab personality in a terriers body. I am one lucky mommy. |

It's depend on your luck :) I wanted a female yorkie, than i have read that males much more cuddly and loving than females, and i got a male. he is almost year old , pee and poop everywhere in the house. I can't take him anywhere because he hike his leg on anything... Our house stinky from his pee... :( Now i got a girl..she is only 3 month old. And what? she is 10000000 more cuddly and loving than my male. And she is already potty trained ! I am so happy with her personality. Many say that males are more cuddly than females, but i think its just depends on the personality. |
I never, ever wanted a male furbaby simply because I didn't want him marking my entire house so my first 2 furbabies were girls. Katie, my first yorkie, was extremely hard to housebreak because we lived in an apartment at that time, not so easy to just open the door and let her out. With Gabby, she was MUCH easier to housebreak as we have a fenced in back yard and could open the door and let her out (one of us always went with her though). But when I had a chance to rescue Gage out of the house he was in, it didn't matter that he was a male, just that he needed love - and LOTS of it. Thanks to some advice I found reading threads here, I invested in some belly bands and then had him altered. He doesn't mark in my house but will mark outside. He was so easy to train on pee pads!! He is now trained to either go outside or use his pads in case of emergency. The only time he will mark is if we are somewhere other than our home (my mom's house, our deer camp) so we keep belly bands for those times we are elsewhere and not at home. I have also found (and opinions vary on this) that Gage is definitely more loveable and a "lap dog" compared to the females I've had. Katie was more loving than Gabby but had her moments where she needed her "space". Gage just wants to be held and loved all the time. I don't think you can go wrong in getting a male - to me, it doesn't matter, male or female, they will steal your heart no matter what:) |
I think it all depends on the dog and how you take care of them. I have never regretting a male dog - ever - and I have had more male dogs in my life than females. All of our dogs (whether it be Mojo or one of the labs, etc) have all been cuddle bugs, love to play and love to be by you.......again, it is all how you treat and care for them! So, I can't see that one is more loveable/affectionate than the others, because in my experience, they have all been this way. Mojo was super easy to train - thank goodness - I heard horror stories, NOT on male dogs, but on Yorkies in general being hard to potty train. The breeder we had got him from must have already started working w/ them or something (well, I know he came from a very loving home, where he was already pre-spoiled)......anyway, he is pad trained and outside trained. He goes to the door and sits on the rug waiting to be let out. He has a poppy pad downstairs and he will go down there. He has a pee pad on our main floor that he uses too. Mojo squats and/or lifts his leg to pee (I guess it just depends on his mood) - ha! He has been good about not marking, but I am home all day and pretty much have been home w/ him since we have gotten him (3 years ago). A friend uses a spray bottle of water on her dogs if they start to mark - so that might be something to look into. Mojo will sometimes lift is leg to mark, and sometimes nothing comes out and sometimes it is a drop or two. - but he only seems to do this in my MIL home for some reason. He still gets in trouble for it, but I am thankful that it isn't a big amount and that he doesn't do that at our house or my parents!!! |
I think they are all different. My male Yorkie is being a little more difficult than my female but neither of them are 100% yet. But I don't think any dog has ever been more difficult than my oldest dog -- a female min. dachshund. I actually cried, threw a fit and said -- that is it, she has to go at about 6 months. It was like she heard me, no more accidents. Overnight, she was completely housebroke. To this day (14 yrs. later), I look at her like she can understand my words. LOL! |
is all how you treat and care for them! So, I can't see that one is more loveable/affectionate than the others, because in my experience, they have all been this way. i wish it was like that, but it's not. It's all about personality. When i got my male, he was super hyper, he didn't liked to be held. More than that, he HATED to be held, he wine, cried and did anything to get out. He didn't liked kisses, all he wanted to do is play. He slept on the other side of the bed. He is very independent, most of the day he is by himself, in different rooms. My girl got exactly the same treat from me, and she is 100% opposite. She LOVE to be held all the time, she like to take kisses and to give kisses. She enjoy to be near me. She sleep very close to me, and always try to hug me at night :) |
I love having my Peanut his is 7 1/2 months and about 95% outside potty trained. He has nevered marked and most of the time he swats. He is very loving and always gives kisses. He gives kisses at the vets and groomers, he is the sweetest thing on four feet.:D |
