Will I own a Yorkie tomorrow? I need help?? Hello everyone! My name is T.J. and I am a soon to be Yorkie owner... so I'm sure I'll be asking for lots of help in the future. I'm meeting with a couple of breeders tomorrow and I have a couple of questions for you pros. The first lady I'm meeting with is an older woman. She has been breeding for around 30yrs. The two dogs she is selling are 7 months old. The asking price is $800. The dogs are house trained, healthy, and current on all their shots. Here are my concerns... - Is 7 months too old for the dog to form a close bond with me. I am worried that he may have formed such a close bond with his owner that he will not enjoy living with me. - Also, $800 seems a little pricey for a 7 month old Yorkie. It is AKC registered and comes with papers confirming its champion bloodline. What do you think? There are a couple of other breeders selling 12-15 wk old pups. They are priced from $600-$800 as well. I am currently living in apartment where I will be able to give the dogs plenty of attention. The fact that the older dog is potty trained and has all his very expensive early shots is a bonus for me. I just don't know if he'll love his new home!? Thanks! |
I got Jaden when he was a year and a half, he was a former show dog that didn't like to show so his owners sold him. He looks just like a puppy and has bonded with me so incredibly fast! He follows me everywhere and loves being here. This is now his home and he knows that. I don't think 7 months is too old, they are still quite young and I am sure they will form a bond with you once he or she gets to know you. Some dogs are more cuddlers than others so it might depend on their personality too, some are naturally more independent and others just want to be with someone all the time. If they are AKC registered with champion bloodlines 800.00 isn't too high of a price depending on their weight. It thay are really large yorkies then yes but if they are 3-4 pounds I'd say no. Jaden is AKC registered with 67 champions in his bloodline and his asking price was 4,500! Best of luck to you with your new furbaby!! |
I found this page on the AKC website: About buying a dog One of the most important things you can do is feed your new puppy a healthy food. Watch the video "Truth About Pet Food". Life's Abundance is a Premium Health Food for Dogs and my Yorkie loves it. |
I dont think you'll have any probs bonding with him as long as you give him enough attention for the first few weeks and help him to enjoy his new home. Good Luck either way - I'm sure you'll fall in love  |
Sorry, I hit submit accidentally before I was finished. I wanted to add that my Monty is a rescue as well as my Lab Mix. We got him when he was a little less than a year old. He bonded with us and our Lab mix right away (and took charge of course) ;) Occasionally local animal shelters, humane societies and rescue groups will have Yorkies, as was the case with my Monty. AKC, registered, bloodline etc wasn't important to us, if those things are important to you I understand, but if they aren't you may save a lot of money and save a life as well. Best wishes and Merry Christmas! |
I am looking at an older puppy because I have a 17 month old and a 9 1.2 year old and od not want to go through the baby stage again right now. I think 7 months old is a good age, first you will have a much better idea of what she will look like and a lot of the hard work is done. But there is nothing like a little puppy either. I think you will know once you see them. |
I don't think you'll have a problem with bonding! We got Maddie in August and she's 3. She LOVES it here! |

$800.00 is not pricey for an AKC Registered Yorkie regardless of the age. I am paying more then that. I paid alot more for my 20 mo old yorkie. I would meet with the breeders and the dogs and see what fits with you the best. Also a little bit older dog will be/ should be potty trained.:) I have adopted from the pound in the past and older dogs will still bond with you! Good luck!! Have fun, Michele & Bailey:aimeeyork plus another one soon... |
Awwww... I'm so excited! I'm meeting with her tomorrow at a local pet store. She has two male yorkies left. One is 5 pds one is 4 pds. It's going to be sooo hard to choose. My uncle is coming, maybe I'll just make him by the other one so they can still be friends! I'll post some pictures tomorrow if i get one :animal36 |
that is a great price for what you are getting. My little girl just turned one. i am thinking of selling her because she has turned out to be too small to breed and is very fragile at 3-1/2 to 4 lbs. IF, I sell her, her price will be 900. non negotiable. She is worth every penny and if some one thinks that is too high, then so be it. If everyone thinks it is too high, then I will just keep her because I am not lowering her price. |

Yorkies bond with their new families very quickly. I got half of my dogs when they were nine months and older and the bond was almost instant. I think 800.00 is a steal depending on what they look like I guess. You should go for it and congratulations on your new puppies. Post pictures soon, we can't wait to see them. Barb: |
They are not too old to bond. But I would have questions, why did she keep them so long, and why do you have to meet her at a pet store? Also, just because a dog is house broke at one house does not mean he will be at your house. New home, new rules, they tend to have to learn all over again. Some people say they are house broke when they really aren't. |
good luck..:animal36 |
$800.00 is not pricey for 7 months old registered pup . |
Jeanie- The 2 male dogs have 2 girl sisters. She wanted to keep some of them for showing purposes. I think in order to see their potential she raised them to their current age. I think the boys (4/5 pds) might be just under the requirements for her but the girls were fine. I assume she wants to meet me at the petstore b/c she doesn't want strangers just coming over to her house. She says the dogs like the toys there too! I had another question for everyone. When you purchase dogs of this quality do they normally come with a guarentee of health? I don't remember her saying anything about this but most of the other owners have. So far I have two appointments scheduled for tomorrow. One with the 7 month old boys and one with a 15 wk old boy and girl. Ugh... such a tough decision! Thanks! |

Darn good questions there for sure! Nobody that has been raising yorkies for 30 years, wants to meet someone at a pet shop! Oh, my breeder also said mine "knew" to go outside. Oh did I find that NOT to be true, lol. You might have a dog broker instead of a breeder there. I would definitely want a health guarantee for sure! |
Might try to google her name and see what comes up too. I'm thinking broker, but I could be dead wrong. |
meeting at pet shop? soundz odd to me also ... where is she being homed as of now???? |
Meeting in a pet store sounds funny to me also. I'd question that. |
Can't wait to see what you decided!!! Hope to hear something from you tomorrow with you new addition !!! |
Now you've got me nervous! I'm glad for your concerns though b/c I'll know to ask some questions. I think it should be pretty clear by the way they look and socialize whether or not they have been taken care of. I'm trying to go in to this with a good attitude regardless... if I get tricked but still give a Yorkie a great new home and companion I think thats what is most important! Wish me luck :-) |
your right about that just pay attention to how they respond to people. |

Deal with one thing at a time ... |
I can understand her not wanting people to come to her home but it does make you wonder. I hope you've done a lot of research and know what to look for in a yorkie. There are so many people who don't and they end up with a dog who has qualities far from the standard. Dogs bond with new owners at any age. Many people adopt senior rescues and they don't have problems. One advantage with a older puppy is you have a much better idea of his adult size. How many people have bought a puppy with the assurance that he'll only be 5 pounds but by the time he's done growing, he's a 15 pounder! Nothing wrong with that, but can be a bit dissappointing if that wasn't what you wanted. I hope I remember to check back here. I'm sure we'll all be waiting to see who you come home with! |
I got Mo when he was 3 and my husband swears he is in love with me! He bonded immediately and gets along well with my whole family. Perhaps she is meeting you at a pet store because it was a easy landmark, a public place and a good place to shop after you get a new pup! I wasn't quite sure if you were just meeting her there or actually *meeting* her there. Can't wait to hear how it goes! Thinking of you right now! |
She may not want to show her facilities..... I agree do a Google.....and go by where she lives........I swear I am paranoid......but careful....the living conditions may make you have second thoughts..... or then again.....maybe she is fine....:D |
I got Andy on 1 Dec. He was 7 1/2 months old. Two weeks later, he follows me or Ginger where ever we go. Within a week, I couldn't leave him here alone. Gin knows to follow me when I leave in the evening without my uniform, he wouldn't follow one night, so I thought I would just leave him, we were only going to be gone 20 minutes. My husband called me within minutes to come get him, he was crying. So I would say you don't need to worry about the bonding issue. As for the potty trained? It seems to be true that trained at one house doesn't mean trained at another. And with males? Trained per room as far as marking goes. If you neuter him, it might help the marking process. |
