How/Why did you get your Yorkie? Here's my story: A few months back I was having baby fever before I got my yorkie TinyBaci. Although I have two daughters I was obsessively wanting a 3rd child since my girls are older and not dependent on me (you would think they still would be they're only 3 and 6) I wanted a baby so badly. But after careful consideration my husband and I weren't ready financially or mentally and I also just started a great job about 9 months ago. My daughters and I have been wanting a puppy for a few years and didn't know whether we wanted get a Maltese or a Yorkie. We were pestering my husband for a while but he didn't want the responsibility of watching after a puppy if we didn't keep up with it .Then by chance before my 3rd daughter's birthday party, we were by the mall and had some time to kill so we went into the Pet Shop to pet some puppies.... The littlest dog there caught our eyes (me and my 6 yr old) so we asked to sit in a booth to pet him. He was such a well tempered cutie! He was giving 5 with his paw and would constantly turn over so we would rub his belly. My kids and I were in love. My husband saw the joy in our eyes and surprisingly asked the sales associate if there were payment plans available since TinyBaci was $1,500. My older daughter started first asking if we could take him home and already naming him Tiny b/c he was the smallest in the shop 12weeks 2lbs7oz. Then my 3yr old took my BabyPhat tote and put it on the floor demanding that her dad put the puppy in there for her to take home. We talked about it and decided to sleep on the idea since we weren't sure if the kids were ready for a puppy. Then my husband said, "Well they love this puppy they wouldn't be happy with any other puppy later on" We filled out the necessary paper work for financing and I made sure he was not from a puppy mill since I heard rumors of pet stores using puppy mills as a supplier. The great news was that Tiny was from a Breeder in Missouri and was all up to date with his shots and micro chipped. We went to celebrate my daughter's 3rd birthday at Fun world and returned the next day to pick up Tiny. Luckily b/c a man was there to purchase his second dog (a smaller dog for his wife) and was pestering the sales person for Tiny although his Kennel was marked "Sold". We took Tiny home and now we are living happily ever after.... = ) Thanks for listening!!! How and why Did you guys get your doggies? :aimeeyork |
I got mine cause they are THE CUTEST little dolls ! I fell in love with a co-workers yorkie and switched from cocker spaniels to yorkies...I waited 3 years before finally getting Chanel and it was a whole new life !! I think once you've had a yorkie - you never go back ! |
My Older yorkie Tilly has cushings and is not in the best of health :( and being that I am so attached to the point I treat her like my real baby, fearing the lost of tilly is so devasting for me, and she always just seemed so alone I felt That maybe she would mother a new baby, since she never had an opportunity to be a mother maybe he or she (new baby) would be good for her & make her happy  and bringing home a new baby was like therepy for myself as well! Well for about a year I have been looking. I went to see some pups that were advertized in the paper, but when we arrived and I saw them(they were cute!!) but I just had to find one with that face :D that would just make me love at first glance! and I didn't see it those babys, Im strange I know. so since we live in a small community I had to wait! san francisco, sacramento for some reason had a shortage of yorkies or they were not for sale! well My husband and I went to the wine country calistoga for our aniversary and I was checking the local paper to see what activities were going on & for some reason I was checking out the classifieds, and saw the ad for two adorable yorkies for sale, so we made an appointment for the following day, and when we pulled up to this cute little cottage of a home I could hear little babys barking :p once we were in the puppies were so excited playing with one another and stoped when I sat down on the floor to play with each one and I picked one up and held it up legs dangling, checking the puppy out (female) the other one just sat up and looked at me with his head tilted like saying what that heck are you doing we were playing! that look on that little face and the curiosity he displayed I knew I had found my baby :D And an additional baby to love :D |
My mom bought Biddy from a breeder and was totally in love with her. She lives in a condo that doesn't allow pets, but decided she was small enough to try to sneak around. She has Biddy for about 5 months before the condo committee told her she had to get rid of her. I had recently moved in my boyfriend & my mom called me crying asking if I could take Biddy since she couldn't keep her. I loved Biddy, but wasn't really thrilled about the responsiblity of having a dog. For about 5 minutes. The first night Biddy jumped in bed with us & we (my bf and I) totally fell in love with her!!! She became our world! We had her for about 6 months and were constantly fighting with each other for her attention!! I want to hold her - No I want to hold her! Let me give her her treat!! Let her sit on my lap for a while! etc.. So we decided to get another puppy in March (Tucker). We've been living happily ever after!! |
I knew I wanted to get a dog...a small one...my friend breeds schauzers and I was going to get a toy schnauzer but he wasn't going to be born until this upcoming august...but I LOVE the pet stores and my boyfriend and I went into petland to look at the puppies. We were looking at all of them and this tiny little yorkie caught my eye...we asked to play with her and she was really sweet....and $2000!!!! I knew immediatley i couldn't afford that. So we went home and talked about it and i decided to look in the paper just to see...I found a breeder who had little pups ready to go...so i drove about 1hr to go LOOK only at the pups and they had two little girls to choose from and Gracie was the one i was immediatley drawn to. We were going to think about it but I just couldn't leave!! I had to have her...and now I am SO glad i did. I did have a little bit of buyers remorse though!!! for about 3 days i was stressed about the money but now she was worth every penny and more!!! |
I have had dogs my whole life. I have had a wide variety of breeds: A samoyed for 13 years, a mixed terrier breed for my first 6 years of life, a Jack Russel terier, and a part Blue Tick hound, with many short term strays in between. I have been in college for three years and have lived on campus year round in the dorms, which do not allow pets! I was going crazy! I went home to visit Kimba (my family Samoyed) on a regular basis to get my doggie fix but he died last summer from old age. I wanted a yorkie for a long time, I tried to get my parents to buy one while I was still at home but they got a Jack Russel instead... loved him but he was a handfull! I am now getting my own House or Apartment and decided now is the time! I hated not having a dog and so I did my research on Yorkies cause I didn't want to buy a dog just because they were cute. But as we all know I found out that Yorkies are perfect pets and began to investigate breeders. One year later I finally got Maximus and I love every minute of being a mommy to my baby boy. It was worth all the work, research and waiting! |
Thanks for the replies everyone!....great stories = ) I guess i'm the only one so far that filled my void of a human baby with a furry friend... LOL |
My last dog was a border collie and died aged 12 years a couple of years ago and I said firmly that I would NEVER go through the heartbreak of losing a dog again so decided then not to get another.....then about a year later I started reading doggy magazines at the library and got some books on small breeds to read and then answered an ad in the local paper. We went to see Pip and fell in love with him and he came home with us. That was last August. I love him to bits. :D |
my last dog died in september so after many months of depression (which coincidentally caused exsessive eating, migraines, ect...) i literally didnt smile for MONTHS, i was soooooooooo unhappy..... my fiance decided that it was allright if i got another one, because he realized after i watched my friends yorkie for a week how happy i was (even if it was only for a few days), we saved up and got toby (i ahd my doubts about wether he was the 'right one' but after hearing several horror stories about bathing, training, ect... i think i have my perfect match......... although no one can compair to my josie babY) |
My neighbor breeds these little cuties :) We got to enjoy playing with her first litter and my daughter asked if they had any more could we possibly get one. She constantly checked to see if they were having pups soon. I went over one night for another reason and just happened to ask if they had any more babies. Yep, just one. It was an accidental pregancy....sshhhh....Trace doesn't know he was an accident ;) Any way I started researching the breed, because although he was adorable, (what baby isn't), I really wanted to know more about yorkies before giving my heart to one. We visited him often. Long before we said we wanted him, the breeder's husband jokely asked...."do you have a name yet?" Guess what, we did....LOL. Now my daughter and I had decided we wanted him, but daddy had to "play" the tough guy.....yeah, right up until tiny Trace fell asleep in his lap :D We've had him almost 4 weeks. |
I really wanted a yorkie for a long time. When my daughter was born we started talking about getting one. After researching about the breed I discovered there was alot written about yorkies being too small of a breed to have with young children so we decided to wait awhile. My daughter was 4 going on 5 and we decided to go ahead and try to get one since she is a very calm child. We found a breeder and were very happy with her. We ended up getting Chachi and then a girl Jewels. It was a great decision they have brought so much happiness into our home. Our daughter does just great with both of them. Chachi is her run after her play buddy!!! Jewels is our snuggler. They were both worth the wait!! |
We got Bentley because Kelly wanted a yorkie. Kelly first asked me if we could get a dog. I had actually tossed around the idea of getting a dog for a long time. I wanted something that wouldn't be too big to ride around with me in my Camaro. So I told her yes. Then she said she wanted a Yorkie. "Ok, no problem. What's that" She showed me a picture and I agreed that they were really cute. Then, after agreeing to getting the dog she disclosed the price to me. I should have known that she would want the most expensive thing on the market:D I was saving to do some performance work to my car. I will let you guess where the money for my new car parts went. |

Awww... what a good guy!! Good choice- car parts aren't nearly as cute and cuddly!! :p |
My hubby's aunt breeds them and wanted me to come see her new litter of pups, we went put $100.00 down. Came back 2 weeks later to pick out. I sat in the floor and she put them down to walk so I could see them, and a little female walked right up to me...That was all she wrote!!! Picked She-ra up a week later!!!! So, technically, she picked me!!! :p |
Started bugging my husband in the mid 1980's that I wanted one... I had yorkie posters on our bed-room walls, yorkie pictures on the refridgerator...I think I wore him down and he finally bought me one in 1990. (he had never spent that much on a dog , $300. and it was hard for him) He's in love with the breed now. We can't imagine not having a yorkie. :aimeeyork |
We got our Sophie after ten years of marriage. We had a poodle for eight years. Who we adored. We started trying for a child very shortly after we got married and after a couple of years of trying we got our poodle Candie. We always thought we wouldn't get another dog after her because we where sure we would have a baby by the time something ever happened to her. Unfortunately things didn't work out that way. After ten years of trying everything for a child and losing our Candie I couldn't bare being in the house alone. It was so quiet. I didn't want anything that reminded me of Candie and I had been raised with Yorkies so my husband bought Sophie for me. We fell in love with her at first sight. :aimeeyork Sophie'smom |

... well, i got Sebastian because i moved into a place on my own. A lot of my friends went home for the summer, so its nice to come home to an excited cute little yorkie. Plus i have always had lots of pets from dogs to toads, so living a year with nothing but messy roomates to worry about was hard. i guess im just an animal person. but why a yorkie? look at them! they are the cutest breed of dog, hands down. i dont like big dogs, and Baz is so tiny i can take him with me on a plane, which i nice, i travel often. so thats my story...i might be the only college student on here.. hmm... :) ~chelsea |
THis is gonna be long.......I am a totally accidental Yorkie owner! In 2003 I was finishing up my master's degree, crazy busy and the last thing on my mind was a dog! I had never had a pet at all (excepot fish that never made it with me). I had been house-sitting for a family for about 6 years and they had a westie (snoball) that I used to watch at least 4 months a year. I love snoball still! During my house-sitting sessions I often had to take her to the vet for various reasons and made a lot of friends at that office. I lived in Fairbanks, AK which is a very small town. Snoball had a vet appt. on my birthday (11/28) and as I was sitting in the waiting area the office door opened and out came the smallest dog I had ever seen (12 weeks and 1.5 pounds) and a woman came after him yelling. Turns out she had just learned that the puppy had a tumor in his belly that would eventually need to be removed and she had decided (and I will never forget this) that "she just didn't want to deal with an imperfect yorkie" the whole time she is yelling and screaming at the vet this little puppy is sitting in my lap licking me and nibbling on my fingers. The woman looked at the vet and said "you can keep him" and stormed out. There are obvious legal issues to this for the vet so they called an attorney, the local animal shelter, the police, and everyone that could help. All of this time the puppy and I are totally falling in love. I didn't care that he wasn't perfect because neither am I! THat was the day I met Simon and he has been with me ever since! The tumor in his belly was removed and he is fine and I think he is perfect! Hallie's story.......June 2004 I get a phone call from the same vet saying the animal shelter was bringing in a small dog who had been abused (kicked/hit/slapped) and neglected and was only 2 pounds. They had taken her from her owners and seized all of her things (including her papers which is how I know her bday). The vet had known I was thinking of getting a playmate for Simon since I didn't want him to be lonely when I started my new job but I was only half serious at the time and was not breed specific at all! I had been taking Simon to the daycare at the vet's office for awhile and they all knew how spoiled he was and how well he was doing at this time so they called me to see if I would be interested in fostering this abused dog (after they kept her for awhile to moniter her health and temperament) and I reluctantly said yes! On July 3, 2004 Hallie came to stay with Simon and I and I have to say we all fell in love instantly. I adopted her officailly the next day and although we have dealt with some issues (obviously with her past) she is now learning to trust others and become more social. She is now a very healthy 5.5 pound princess! Sorry this is so long but like I said, I am an accidental owner ;) |
In 2001, I lost both my beloved Blarny (in March at the age of 16) and Chooch (in June at the age 0f 17). Chooch's loss was particularly hard on me, as he was "MY DOG". Also rather than quietly slipping away in his sleep as had Blarney, I had to have him euthanized (which was a HORROR! His veins had collapsed, so they had to do the injection under his tongue! I still have nightmares!!!). Well, after going through the standard grieving...which had actually been going on since March, when Blarny died...I decided there was NO WAY I was going to be long term without a dog. I had always loved Yorkies...just the look and spirit of them. I never actually knew one "up close and personal", so I went on the search for a reputable breeder. I was introduced to Connie Conn at a regional dog show in August. At that point, my Maggie had just been born (less than a week prior). Connie, however, had plans to keep her, grow her up and show her. I stayed after her with e-mail however, and she ultimately decided I could adopt Maggie. Maggie was my little "Trick or Treat Surprize". I got her on Halloween! Fast forward three years...About a year ago I started thinking of getting Maggie a sister...just started thinking about it at that point. Then about six months ago, I found Connie's business card (KISMET!!!), wrote her a letter about letting me know if she was still breeding, etc. Well, I heard back from her early last month. At that point, she had decided one of the pups she was keeping "to grow up and show" was never going to make it to the size she likes for show (around 5 - 5.5 pounds), and wanted to know if I wanted her. She was, however, "an older dog" at 5 months. On 04/22/04, I got my Molly! What a cutey! 2 pounds 2 oz. of HELL! (She's grown since she joined us, tho'. Last Saturday at her vet appointment, she was clear up to 2#, 4 oz.!) So, now I have two...Maggie and Molly. WHAT FUN!!! (And the breed really is everything I hoped it would be. These little girls make me laugh right out loud every day of my life!) |
I got my Maltese about 3 months after my husband and I got married because I'd been wanting a dog all my life but something always kept me from getting one. Tuffy has been such a wonderful addition to the family that after just a couple months of having him I knew I wanted to get a 2nd dog. And a lot of people told me that dogs are better in pairs.. so naturally that helped me want one even more. Since Tuffy is a smaller dog I knew I wanted to get another small dog so there wouldn't be size issues between them.. that and we live in an apartment so small dogs are about all that will fit. My husband and I tossed around the idea of getting another Maltese but the grooming and upkeep are really tough and I knew I didn't want to get another Malt from the breeder I got Tuffy from. My husband was also leaning towards getting a different breed of dog and I suggested a Yorkie or a Papillon. After lots of research and calling around and getting on forums and getting advice we finally decided on a Yorkie and a breeder. We already had picked out her name months before we even decided to start looking for a new dog. We picked Pixie as a name because it was a fun contrast to Tuffy. Pixie came home on April 12th and she's been a fantastic addition to the family. I wouldn't have chosen another breed at all over the Yorkie because she compliments my Maltese so well. :D :aimeeyork |
this is a fun topic great stories. I wanted a yorkie for my whole life (as far back as i can remember) well i grew up and moved on my own and had human kids and cats so didnt really think about getting a dog then one day i went to the store and there in a shopping cart was 13 baby rotties pups i never wanted a big dog but something about 1 of them i walked up to her she was adorable i told my kids no we have cats and went shopping came out and there were only 2 left of course the one i was attracted to so i still said no got in the car and drove half way home and turned around kids said mom what are you doing i said going to nala lol she was the only one left in the cart. I paid 50.00 for her which i really couldnt' afford at the time. But she was the best dog ever. I kinda forgot about yorkies cuz i could never afford one. 5 years later i was at a clients house and she had a yorke pup and mom the pups name was maryia she was so cute of course i bought her she was 800.00 that night the lady called and said her kids were upset that she sold her so she wanted to see if they got better in a couple of days other wise she wanted her back i said no way then we will be attached if you want her back come get her now so she did. Now we were heart broken so i looked in the paper and called on an ad he said all the pups were gone but he had a different female that might be having babies i waited so long for sebastain and he was well worth the wait lol then i was scared to bring him home cuz nala was so big but they got along great as he got bigger they played tug of war and stuff it was really cute. Then i just couldnt stand it i had to have another so i got jasmine 4 months later. In March last year i lost my Nala she had liver diease poor sebastain was so depressed for a long time. I would own 1000 yorkies if i could lol i love them. |
I had a dalmatian who died just prior to moving to MO from TX. I had decided then, that I wanted a Yorkie...had her name picked out and everything. I just wasn't ready for ANY dog for awhile, but we saw an ad in the newspaper about yorkie puppies and also found out that sometimes they aren't available whenever you want. We went to see her and came home with our Gracie. About a year ago, my husband wanted his OWN yorkie puppy since Gracie is VERY much MY lapdog. We entertained the idea of breeding our Gracie who is now almost 4 years old (we've moved back to TX), but after reading lots of posts on here, I was scared to death that something would happen to Gracie during this whelping process. I convinced my husband that we should just BUY another and let Gracie alone. LO! Would you believe I met just the right person on here almost immediately after becoming a member! Avery's mom had to get rid of Avery (4 mo old) because her little boy was too rough with him. We met her to see him and, of course, drove away with him! He's an absolute doll and we love him to death. NOW....wanna know the problem? HE is my lapdog, too!!! The two of them have to take turns, but neither want to sit on my husband's lap. He's left out altogether! Our older dog is very much the QUEEN, but Avery snuggles like a little tiny baby. They play together constantly, till they both are completely worn out! It's still hard for me to believe I've got TWO little bitty dogs after growing up with only much larger breeds; boxer, doberman, dalmatian! BUT what a joy they are!! |
I wanted a yorkie for years.and my youngest daughter will be leaving home in a couple of years and my shih-tzu is getting older just wanted another small dog to love and cuddle with . :) |
We got our first dog, a Pomeranian named Gucci, as a baby substitute. We got our Yorkie, little Reese, as a playmate for Gucci. We got both dog's through breeders referred from our local Pom and Yorkie clubs. |
Mine is a short story. I lost my female rottie about 6 months ago. But really it was empty nest syndrome. No more babies at my house. :( |
The story of Esme... Well, I got married November of 2003. My husband and I purchased a house and went from our parents homes into our first home together. I come from a noisy happy family. I am one of three girls, my parents have two yippy pomeranians and there are ALWAYS people coming in and out, boyfriends, friends, the cheerleading squad. It's a hectic place. ;) Adjusting to living in a house with just two people was rough! In addition, my husband works late a lot so I was home alone, in this really quiet house quite often. Don't get me wrong, quiet is nice, but I was lonely! Every once in a while, I would ask for a dog and my husband would say: "Too much responsibility, let's enjoy being newleyweds, a dog is like having a baby, we aren't ready... blah blah blah!" All that time, I was researching breeds, and fell in LOVE with yorkies!!! Finally, in January, (after being married 1 year and 2 months) I said "Lazaro, I am getting a dog, and that's final." He looked at me and said, "OK." THat was followed by several days full of discussions about what breed to get. He wanted a bulldog or bull terrier, I wanted a yorkie... During this time, I had already started calling breeders, looking in the newspaper, etc, because I KNEW I was getting my yorkie. We went to visit a few breeders about mid January and found 'our breeder.' We went to see her on a Sunday. I think it was around January 21 or something like that. Anyhow, she had a litter of yorkies that was ready to go home. Esme was one of her medium sized babies. I didn't want a tiny yorkie since my husband I work full time and I knew the baby would have to spend her days home alone, but I still wanted a small dog I could take places. Esme was 11 weeks at the time. She was in a large crate with another female yorkie when I saw her for the first time. The other yorkie was jumping all over her, and biting Esme's ears. Esme just walked to the edge of the crate, and put her little paw out to me! The breeder took her out, put her in my arms and I was IN LOVE! Then she told us her price... $1250. I thought my husband was going to DIE. I gave her back to the breeder and my husband and I went to lunch to talk it over. We also went to see another breeder who LIED to us, but thats another story. That night, we called the breeder and asked if we could come back. We did and my husband negotiated with the breeders husband, and we paid $900 for Esme!!! Her husband says he has NEVER had anyone negotiate for the price of their dogs before, but he respected my husband for doing it. ;) My husband LOVES a deal. SO, (wow this is long) we gave a $300 deposit and came back for her the following Friday. It's been happily ever after since then. I am NEVER lonely!!!! Now I am trying to convince my husband that we need to get a yorkie for Esme so she doesn't feel lonely when we are away either. He isn't going for it just yet.. |
We have had yorkies for MANY years, after the last one passed in october 2003 we swore never to get another coz we dont want to feel the pain of losing another baby... our lives were not the same, i was depressed!! we got married in may 2004 and at the end of january this year we got Chelsey, just 10 days ago we got Chanel... ive always wanted a daughter, now i have two :D and they are spoiled rotten!! |
Well before i got charlie, i had always wanted a yorkie, and one week I stumbled across an ad in the paper. Since i had two jobs for 6 months, i had saved quite a bit of money. I called the breeder and she was like 6 hrs away. she said she would meet me half way and i have been in love with charlie ever since. He only wieghed 1lb when i go him, now he is 7. |
