Shaved! Yes, shaved! =( So, I took Howie to get groomed this weekend (it was spur of the moment thing, since my BF kept saying Howie needed a cut). To make a long story short, they said he was too badly matted on his sides and legs and it would be too much on him to comb out the mats (his skin would be irritated, etc.). So, they said the only thing to do was shave it and insisted his next coat would come in a lot better. My boyfriend also just convinced me to do it since it would be in Howie's best interest so he didn't have to have his hair pulled at, or his mats getting worse. I was EXTREMELY upset. I was just PMing Stedman's mom about Howie cut, and then now it came down to this. :( Has anyone ever had to have their baby shaved? I'm hoping it doesn't take too long for his coat to grow in. They said to have it the length I came in with, it would take 2-3 months. But, I don't want it that long, so I'm hoping not more than 2 months. That's still a long time. :( :( :( |
AWWWWWWWWWWWW! Poor Howie!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( You're gonna have to get that baby a COAT since it's cold out! You don't want that baby getting cold this winter!!!!!! Maybe you should invest in some Cowboy Magic so his coat won't ever get so badly matted again. |
it is better for them if the hair is that matted to shave it off. when it does grow back (which it will) you will need to make sure you keep it groomed everyday. i am actually thinking about having my kirby shaved up to his face b/c i cant seemed to keep him groomed everyday and even if i do, a few hours later it looks like a mess. |
i'm sorry that happened to poor little howie :( they could have atleast told you before they went and shaved him |

Buddy has been shaved down during the last two summers. He grew back, not down to the floor of course, in about 2-3 months at which time he needed to be trimmed. I let him grow for 4mos and went in for a trim and again he was cut down but not shaved so were starting again to let it grow. Be patient because you have no choice. It will grow back. Sorry Howie!!! I hope you are able to get him some cute sweaters and a coat!! He'll need some!! |
Awww..dun worry!! Howie will still be adorable!! Zoe second haircut was a complete shave. I did not ask for it but that's what the groomer did. I was really upset but everyone else LOVED it! It grew back really quickly. It took 2 months for him to grow to the lenght I wanted Quote:

I am sooooo sorry.:( I took Josie in once (and only once). This was still during her puppy stage. She still had some black in her coat. Well, when it was time to pick her and they brought her out. I looked up and smiled and said, "I'm sorry that not my baby" and went back to writing my check. They said, "actually this is your dog". I looked up and was so stunned, that I practically started crying. They kept apologizing and saying that they was the only option. :thumbdown  Ever since then I do my own grooming. She may not have the best cut, but at least I know what I want. ;) Don't worry it be a slow process but, it will grow back. :) |

They did tell me. Oh no, if they did it without my consent, I would throw a FIT!! I did not want to give in, but I had to think rationally, hahah. I had to keep reminding myself that it WILL grow back. I think I will be looking into Cowboy Magic. I think it was that bad because I was not used to combing him when I initally got him, so it was hard. But, this has definitely set me straight. EVERYDAY!!! But yes, he has a big (literally big on him now w/ no fur!) sweater on. He still has his little face nice and trimmed the way I like it though. My poor baby. :( |
Thank you, everyone for you support and making me feel better about it. I was a total baby when it came to it. I was seriously tearing. I stayed there the WHOLE time because I refused to leave and wanted to take him home as soon as it was over. LOL. But, thank you everyone. At least I know he's not the only one that HAD to be shaved. Lesson learned I guess. I just feel so bad because it's winter. But, reason to buy him more clothes!!!! :D |

I took Bailey into a new groomers in June and they shaved her down to the skin; I was horrified. They said she had a matt under her front leg they couldn't get out and so they shaved her WHOLE body. I didn't pick her up from the groomers my son did, but he did call to tell I wasn't going to be very happy:( Bailey didn't have a matt, I am very good about brushing her out, I always do before I take her to the groomers. She just went in to get her ears and privates cleaned up. Anyway her hair is growing back out, it does take a couple of months. At this time of the year just invest in a sweater. The good news is Bailey really liked her haircut and not wearing bows in her hair:D It will grow back in time, Michele & Bailey:aimeeyork |
You saved him from pain - you probably did the right thing - some mats can be to the skin if unnoticed so I would have done the same thing - groomers can be rough and it IS only hair and will grow back - enjoy it and I bet he's loving his little naked self when a groomer cut Chanel way too short - she loved her sassy self |
I know how you feel, my baby had to be shaved on his belly on legs when he was 3.5 months old, I didn't really have an idea about a proper combing and he got terribly matted... I'd rather they did that and I could start from scratch than put him through dematting right on the first grooming visit. It grew back quickly, it hasn't been 3 months yet and he already has his hair longer than he used to before that groom. Needless to say, I religously comb him every morning and at least he doesn't have bad experiences... |
Well I feel just terrible!! All these little pooches going to get a Steddy haircut and it is nothing but a horrible experience for them! :( :( :( I wish you could all just bring them to me and I would cut their hair for ya!!! LOL  First little Wookie (although I think he looked sooo cute!!!), and now little Howie :( Don't feel bad though - the same exact thing happened to me the one (and only) time I took Stedman to be groomed. He didn't have any mats (maybe a tiny one or two, nothing major) however the groomer just DIDN'T know what she was doing, obviously. She told me herself (AFTERWORDS!!!) that she was new  I guess she did the best she could - but he was SUPER short, shaved down...and looked like a Schnauzer!! I was SUPER unhappy - but it DID grow back...and it grew back fast! His hair grows quick though - thank goodness! I'm sure little Howie still looks PRECIOUS!!! Get him some cute little sweaters if he doesn't have them already - that will hide the haircut and keep him warm at the same time ;) BIG hugs to you Howie boy!! I'm so sorry to hear that you had a bad time at the groomers :( |

You want to hear something really sad? I actually shaved my first Yorkie, Maggie down myself -- sort of a Schnauser cut leaving a tiny thin skirt. We had Hurricane Ivan come in and tear the place apart bad -- I knew from experience we would be without power for a long time and she could not stand the heat. With no A/C, I felt the only thing to do was take off her long coat. So before we went back home, I bought a set of clippers and sheared the poor baby. I about cried but like yours -- everyone kept telling me how cute she looked that way. So, it is only our own mind thinking they need all that long hair. :) I am sure he is still a little doll and it will all grow back in soft and silky. Order some Cowboy Magic Detangler and you will be all set when it does. |

What happend to Wookie's hair? I haven't had a chance to go through all of the post yet. But, I know it wasn't her fault. A few of the groomers came out to look at him and they showed me, and I do agree he was matted pretty bad (because I didn't brush him from the beginning). So, I guess it was the best option. But, I totally feel for those who do not even expect to see their babies this way, and coming back to pick them up. OMG, I would be furious. But, like everyone says. It will grow out. And, my boyfriend offered to groom Howie the next time. He's good with clippers and trimming...he does his own hair! ahhaha. :) So, we'll see. |

You are right though - if little Howie was matted, shaving him down was the best possible thing for him - and thats all that matters! ;) As you said it will grow back...and it'll be there before you know it! :p I'm sure your boyfriend will do a great job on him the next time around ;) P.S.- Here is the link to Wookie's post: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61169 |
1 Attachment(s) Ohhhhhhhh poor howie, I hope his hair grows bakc really fast. One time while I was in S. Korea they shaved down my maltese and look how he looked:eek: Luckly his hair grew back and is more beautiful and soft than ever:D Poor Chiquito was so upset and cold, and was just   But I can't speak Korean:D |
When we got Tia she had to be shaved because she was so matted. She was all black and about 15 weeks old and when it grew back it came in so light she looks almost white. We keep all 3 of ours in a puppy cut because they matt so much that they hated to be brushed everyday and now I can put clothes on them and not worry about the knots! |
From a groomer's point of view -- there really isn't much else they can do. If a dog is badly matted -- it can take hours and hours to get them out - plus, this would be the worst day your dog ever had in it's life. It hurts! And - to be honest - some matts just can't be removed. ********* So the lesson is to do some daily grooming at home. I really think that if you have a real problem with your dog matting (a lot) - I'd keep it in a puppy cut......it's much easier and this is one of my favorite cuts anyway! In a way - you can count your blessing now - and if you keep her matt free at home - you won't have to go through this again. ----------- As far as it being winter -- I don't see any problem here. My little guy has short hair - and I can't get him to come in. I only let him stay out for 10 or 15 minutes - and then I have to go out and drag him in...and, he never seems to be very cold. He's never shivering..... Carol Jean |

same thing happened to scruffy i know exactly how you feel...this past october i had to do the same thing to my puppy who was 5 months old at the time...it's still not grown back fully but he looks pretty normal now and his hair is so soft....it was the worst experience ever for both of us...now i groom him really often...the only thing is he was black and tan before i shaved him and now he grew back all silver...good luck |
1 Attachment(s) Bald yorkies aren't that bad :( Maizee only had hair until she was about 4 months old and then she lost it all. A lot of people think I shaved her, but she just doesn't have any hair. In fact, whenever I take her places, people ask where they can buy a bald yorkie! So it's not all bad :) and the sweaters are fun This is a picture of Maizee when she first lost it. She even has less on her tush than it shows there, but she doesn't look too bad, I think. Maybe it's a face only a mother could love though  |
Alot of groomer will do this if they find what they consider to be many matts. It makes it easier on the groomer. Thats why you always want to stress the fact that if they find too many matts on your baby they are to call you to get permission to shave or for you to pick him up. Also daily brushing is very important to keep those matts under control. |
Before I found YT, I kept Adonis cut really short. But I do the cutting! Since I found YT, and all of you highly recommended Cowboy Magic, Venus hasn't been cut, and Adonis's hair is slowly (and I do mean slowly) growing back out. He's 5 years old, and Venus is 6 months old. That stuff works miracles on mats, and so does daily brushing and de-matting. Never again, will either be shaved. And I will not take them to a groomer, because they don't use cowboy magic to get mats out, and most groomers would rather shave than take the extra time and expense with Cowboy Magic. After all, time is money out of their pockets. |
