Ears not standing up??? My yorkie is 6mths & his ears don't stand up. I have never done anything to try & make them stand up but would kind of like it if they did. Is it too late to do anything about it. If not, how do I make them stand up without making my pup too uncomfortable? |
At six months of age, it can still happen, just unlikely. You may want to start w/ trimming a portion of the tip of the ears. And personally I'd go one step further and tape them up myself at this point. If you're not sure how to do all of the above, just ask and I'm sure fellow members here will be able to post up photos at the very least to give examples. If not, then you may want to solicit the advice of a local veterinarian that is experienced in taping ears. Don't give up just yet if it's something you really want! ;) |
You might try searching for info as there are lots of posts about it. Personally, I don't think it is too late, others may disagree. At this point, I would keep the top 1/3 of her ears shaved inside and out. Also tape the ears using scotch tape. Gently hold them up and fold them together until they look like a taco shell, then secure with some scotch tape. If it is going to work it generally does within a few days. Good luck! |
Kodak's ears went back down even after I did some of those things, but I like the look now. He looks like a ragamuffin. But I still like the ears up, and they go up when he's up to no good, or being a guard dog. |
Scratch them! This is going to sound weird but I beleive they hold them up themselves. I have 2 full grown (1 male and 1 female) and 2 female puppies that are now 14 weeks old. My male was 20 weeks old when I purchased him his ears a very small and were already erect/standing and are always up. Abigail has bigger ears, I struggled with her.......I fed her cottage cheese/calcium supplements, her ears go up and down depending on her mood (being submissive etc.) The 2 female puppies; I shaved their ears @ 7 wks. old and both their ears are small and standing, my male puppy that I Sold, his ears were shaved @ 7 wks. too but they didn't stand-up until he was 10 wks. old and he had 1 that would flop now and then, I have long fingernails and every time I saw it Flopping I would scratch his ear and whistle or make some kind of noise to make it stand-up and when he would make it stand I praised him so he knew that's what I wanted. He did take after his Mother and inherited her big bat ears, hopefully he'll grow into them? When you shave the ears it has to be shaved completely on the inside, I even pluck the hairs in the ear canal too. I would try taping them if you don't have the energy to train him to do it? I think it's still possible, Good Luck! |

4 Attachment(s) I had the same problem, I also tried taping Josie's ears when she was about 6-7 months old, but they never stood back up. Here is a picture with her ears taped and a picture of her now. I kind of like her ears down now, I am use to it. It kind of gives her a cute puppy look! |

Does it hurt them when you pluck the hair out of their ear canals? Maddie has tons of hair in her ear canal and I have been afraid to pluck it for fear I would hurt her. |

Thank you! I am going to be giving baths this afternoon and wondered if that would be the time to do it...do you use tweezers? (might be dumb question I guess lol) |

Thank you Mardelin -- for the speedy reply. I will go call the local beauty supply place and see if they have that trimmer. If not, I did see it online. This place is amazing -- experienced help for any Yorkie concerns! Thanks again! |

I use a hemostat.....I get a better grip, but it's just a matter of preferance. Use what you feel comfortable with. I usually do it before baths, then after bath follow up with ear cleaner with a drying agent (I use Vet Solutions from animalrevival). You might want to use a little powder it gives you a better grip. |
2 Attachment(s) My two boyz, Rex & Rowdy, both have the same parents, different litters. Rowdy's ears stood by themselves at about 10 weeks. Rex, on the other hand, has large thick ears and his ears have never stood. I tried taping them on 3 occasions, I kept them shaved till he was five months old. Nothing worked. Oh, if you use masking tape, it doesn't pull so much when you take it off. Here is a picture of them taped, and then a pix of him and Rowdy. Many people think Rexy is the cutest with his "down" ears. I think they are both adorable, each in their own way. |
