Do people really steal yorkies????? I was just reading the thread "Scared me to Death" about someone thinking you had their stolen dog, then followed the link about the person who lost thier dog. I live in Inverness in Scotland right now and have NEVER EVER heard of a dog being stolen. Is it true is their a risk of dogs being stolen in the usa. My pups run about the garden at the front people go by and pet them all the time while I am busy inside the house I dont supervise them as the garden is secure so they cant get out but the fence is low people lean over to pet them all the time. Likewise if I go shopping my pups stay in the car for the hour im in the shops of course I lock it they lay in their beds quite happy. When I move to NJ I take it I need to be more careful and supervise them outside ALL THE TIME. What precautions do I need to take to keep my babies safe? It frightens me to death someone may steal them I have never heard of this how horrible? Please let me know all I need to do to keep them safe!!!! Ruthx |
Sadly..it does happen. What I do is...never leave them unattended! never leave them in a car. When you let them out in the backyard make sure your always watching them. Always walk them on a leash..someone could drive by and just snatch them infront of you. hope this helps..:animal-pa |
YES! Unfortunately, in our 'land of plenty' we have plenty of selfish, uncaring people who just take what they want: property, pets, children!! You're very fortunate to live (at present) where you are free from such worries; but, you will need to make some adjustments when you move. Just heighten your awareness skills as to who is around, and be sure the pups are not in situations where someone could just pick them up and walk off. Just as you would with your children. My Abbie will be 1 y/o in 3 days, and so far I've been pretty generous with letting folks on the street hold her. But....THAT is going to change. |
It depends on the neighborhood. But yes it does happen. |
Some people will steal anything that is not nailed down. Dog theft is such a problem that it is a felony in NC. Be mindful where ever you are to keep a eye on your furbaby. Teri:animal-pa |
Be Careful! We had a Yorkie that was taken out of our backyard about 5 years ago. It was so heartbreaking and we are still always wondering what exactly happened to her. Today my yorkies are locked safely in our home when I am gone or I go outside with them in the fenced backyard. I believe now that you can not be too careful. I hope you never have to go through that tragedy. |
Thanks for your replies guys, Wow it really does happen I cant imagine how heartbreaking that would be not knowing what kind of home your baby is in it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Do you think my pups will be ok in a locked car in Burlington NJ places like Wallmart, Mall, Shoprite, car parks? My pups like to come with me and would rather sit in car for the actual hour im shopping than be left home. They curl up and go to sleep in the car. Or should I really leave the at home? Ruthx |
They're being stolen more and more as the prices for purebreed dogs go up and "designer" puppies are now such a fad :thumbdown - it SUCKS - Criminals will always look for the easy way to make a buck & it seems they can get hundreds for the high priced dogs - it's just awful that they're being stolen and in many cases - probably for drug money. |

My girlfriend actually had someone come into her house in Corsicana, Texas and stole her yorkie and she was there in the bedroom. |

I know a lot of people probably do this but personally, I think it should be illegal. |
stealing Thieves do not confine themselves to any certain part of the world...there are some places where you do not need to lock your doors at night and other places you would not go out at night...just about everything happens in the UK as it does here in the USA, but on larger more frequent occurance due to the great difference in population of America. PS..it is quite common for people in the UK to leave dogs in the car...shoot, we used to tie our dogs leash to the post outside the shops when we went inside...but that was a different time and place... |

What I think should be illegal is ANYONE who would leave their dog in extremes of heat or cold in any place, garden/car/shed ever owning a dog!!! Ruthx |
I came home from work on August 19, 1996 to my front door wide open. I was panicked because my first thought was that my poor baby, Edie was out because some stupid person broke into my house and left the door open. But, the actuality was that the stupid person who broke into my home came for my precious Edie. They took her, her food bowls, crate, food, clothes, leash, toys.... all of her belongings. They left the jewelry, electronics and cash. She was just over 6 years old, and she weighed 4 pounds. She was the love of my life, and it took me almost 10 years to be able to bring another yorkie into my home because the pain of having Edie taken from me was so great. My girl, GiGi is almost 8 months old, and she comes to work with me. I never leave her in the car. If my husband and I go out, or shopping to a place that she can not go, then I take her to a relative to watch. I am terribly paranoid about that. I used to think Edie was safe in her home..... I do not assume GiGi is. |
