thoughts of finding a new home for my Rems okay remmie is almost 10months old he is not standard yorkie by any means but sweet and loving, but i have been having problems w/ him. i dont know why but he is food aggressive..and when ever another dog comes by he is mean snarling growling not actually bitting. but is not fair to the other dogs. he has even begun to snarl at me when i try to correct him....any suggestions or takers??...lol |
Have you ever thought of having a behaviorist come and see what's causing the aggression? Maybe he/she could give you some strategies to decrease or eliminate the behavior. I had someone come out to help me with Max. He was acting aggressively around other dogs (no biting or anything) but I was worried that one of these days another dog was going to attack him. She worked wonders with Max. It's NOT cheap to have a behaviorist come to your home by any means, but if you really don't want to find him another home, it's something to consider |
thanks that is certainly something to look in to but the cost, im afraid to ask |
Obviously the cost would vary--depending on who you hire and how much he/she charges. The one I hired came highly recommended and is very reputable in Pittsburgh and she charged $65/hour plus there were some extras. She came twice and the total was about $360 but well worth the cost |
Hi, I don't have any advice for you, but I'm sure this is a big deal for you so I'm giving this thread a bump. Good luck. |

This calls for some Dog Whisperer tactics. Remmi thinks he is the pack leader because you have not made it clear to him that you are. http://www.dogchannel.com/experts/ce...aspx?WT.srch=1 Check out his site, he has a lot of good tips and DVDs to help you. No matter if you keep him or rehome him, he is going to have to be taught that he is not the top dog. An agressive dog has to be dealt with. You can't just sell him or give him away and expect his behavior to change. Obedience classes are also good. |
Tammy, I'm within driving distance, and would really consider begging my hubby for him; but, Abbie is also food aggressive. Silly thing....she starts 'warning' my Mozart away before he even enters the kitchen! |
cchu no it wasnt recently just whenever any other dogs comes by but it may be jealousy, he has been spending a lot of afternoons outside because of the attitude problem, which is probably not helping jeanie thanks i will deff need to look at that i have tried different thing, growling at him and trying to be "top dog" obedience training him self which he does very well, i wish i had that same touch the dog whisper has he "sushes" them and they do anything he wants i tried shushing, yelling, firm voices nothing works, right now i am picking him up at the scruff and telling him "no" firmly (the neck thing doesnt hurt him hes a pretty thick guy) abby thanks maybe we can both get some helpful info on this thread, i really dont want to let remmie go..he and my son are best friends |
ohh abby i found male ckc yorkies $350.00 in martinsville if you are interested let me know and i will give you the # |
Has he been neutered yet? If not the testosterone in his system might be adding to his agressive attitude. |

Thanks for the tip on the male pups; but, though I do have 'puppy' fever AGAIN, I'm not really looking to add to our family right now. I just was thinking of being sure Remmie had a good home to go to, if it came to that. We watch Cesar, too; and, this is what I sometimes do with my senior 26lb male, Mozart, when he shows the slightest aggression toward me. (Get this: Abbie can do ANYTHING to him, and he won't even snarl at her - he just goes and hides, or stands back and wait until she eats! But, me - who raised him from a pup, and feeds him - ME, he'll snap at  ) I use the hold-at-the-throat method that Cesar uses. I grab the side or back of his throat, and push him down until he's on the floor. Then, I keep him there - no speaking or yelling, just holding - until he becomes calm submissive. Perhaps you could do that, when Remmie shows you aggression, to establish your Top Dog status :). Side note: My Mozart is really a sweetheart, and has never offered to snap at anyone else. Everyone just loves him. I think(?) maybe he takes a bit more liberty with me, because he knows I'll love him no matter what; and at 12 y/o is still a spunky guy, who tests his limits now and again. Well.....EXCEPT WITH ABIGAIL! :p |
Maybe the method I use to kid proof my dogs will help you. Instead of feeding him in his bowl- feed him by hand for a while. Then take it to the next level by removing food from his bowl while he is eating and then rewarding him with praise and petting for not attacking you ( you may want to wear a leather glove for this, just in case.) Also when playing with them, if they get rough, I say ouch and I also use this for my release command when playing tug of war or fetch. I started doing this with the hopes of having grandkids and now I have a 1 year old grandson and they all get along well with him. I even tugged on their ears and tail while playing and when they were younger. But I do watch my grandson around my 13 year old Husky because she is getting a little grumpy in her old age and she does have her own special room to go to when he is here if I suspect anything may happen. But she pretty much hangs out in her room when my grandson is here unless she wants outside. Hope this helps. I don't think I would be able to let any of my pets go without trying to correct a bad situation. Good luck . |
