I got told off today at the vet's office!!! Today was Mickey's last vet appt for her 1st year baby shots. Mickey is my 4 and 1/2 month old Yorkie. She currently weighs 5 pounds. I am amazed that she even weighs this much because she is very tiny. My other dog is a 11 lb Shih Tzu, 4 year5s old who is MUCH larger than Mickey in height, bone structure etc. Anyway, we (me & Mickey) are at the vets office this am. After about 15 mins of our arrival, a woman comes in with her Yorkie. Well, one word led to another and the 2 of us start talking Yorkies. It turned out that her Yorkie, was 6 months old and weighed 2 pounds, and was there to be spayed. This woman then asked me questions about my Mickey and when she heard that she was 5 pounds at 4.5 months---she was horrified! She told me in no uncertain terms that I "Must" get this "animial" spayed since she was : "well beyond the breed standards". She then proceeds to try to convince me to sell my "unacceptable" Yorkie. To just accept the "loss," and start over! God works in amazing ways...............thank goodness me and my unacceptable Yorkie", ....were called into the next examing room. |
 what a miserable person. i wander if she would put her child in foster care if he wasn't perfect. mean people suck. i'd write more , but i don't feel like getting ganged up on today. i agree with you. i would have been LIVID. ps. i just saw you are at the jersey shore. what town?? are u a year long resident? my mom has a beach house at seapointe in wildwood crest. |
What a HORRIBLE lady! She doens't know much about this amazing breed does she? |
Some people are just very opinionated. I'm not very nice most of the time and I would have told her that AKC states that the standard is under 7 lb and your dog is below that limit. And I would have asked her how anybody could justify breeding dogs down to end up as tiny as hers. And then I would have said that I think she should wait to spay her's since it was so small it has a greater risk during surgery. Oh yeah then tell her to mind her own f...ing buisness:D |
Well... First of all, Mickey may be within the standard size limit. She may only reach 7 pounds. Secondly, this person's Yorkie could very well come in under the standard weight. God does work in mysterious ways. He could feed her crow.:D Teri:animal-pa |
I get so sick of hearing about "breed standard" !!! I am so sorry that you had to go through that. Some people are just so stuck up and snobby when it comes to dogs. I will say that I had never encountered this until I had a Yorkie of my own.... Wow.. I would like to say this shocked me but sadly it doesn't....(HUGS) |
I would have been furious! Last time I checked, 5 pounds was still within the breed standard. And even if Mickey grows bigger than 7 pounds, who the heck cares?! You love him the same either way!! What a horrible woman. Of course I recommend you neuter if you're yorkie isn't breeding material, but at the end of the day it's your own darn business what you do with your dog! And I'm not a vet, but isn't 2 pounds too tiny to be spayed??? P.S. I grew up in South Jersey in Washington Township. What a small world! |

Yes we are year long residents but do also spend a few months every year in our Florida home. Wildwood is about 50-60 minutes down the Garden State Parkway for us. |
My Remi is 5 lbs. at 5 monthes old. According to the growth charts she should be between 6.5 and 7 lbs. full grown. She carries the color gene that I have been breeding for and will be a wonderful size to create healthy pups. My goal is to produce a certain show dog and she is part of the equation. Don't let some snob tell you anything about your baby. Not everyone wants a 2 pound pup, different strokes for different folks. |
That woman is a jerk! My Lucy is almost 10 mos old and weighs 9.5 lbs. I didn't buy her to show, I bought her to love! I bought Rebel for the same reason. He's small at 1lb 8 oz at 12 weeks, but I DIDN'T buy him as a teacup. I love them both the same. Lucy has been spayed, and Rebel will be when he's old enough and big enough. I can't believe the nerve of some people. That's Your baby and the only opinion that matters is yours. |
How rude! Gracie was about 4.5 lbs at 5 mo. The vet still considered her "small". I'm just glad that she is healthy. To heck with "breed standard". |
That is terrible... You should have said.... O'Yeah, Well my yorkie can beat up your yorkie. lol lol lol People can be soooo dang rude. |
How rude  she should have kept her mouth shut. |
You have an INCREDIBLE amount of self-control. I'm telling you I would've socked her in the jaw. PS - how lucky that you live downtheshore (one word..lol). We go there for vacation every year and my parents have always been jelous of the year-round residents. |
My yorkie weighed 2.5lbs @ 6months. She weighs 5.5 now at 15months, so that lady may find her yorkie being unexceptable weight, in her eyes anyways  At 5.5lbs she only looks 3.5lbs, so....I think she was wanting your yorkie ;) Alot of people claim that dogs stop growing at 6months, I have never seen that. Usually keep growing til 1yr or so & then get wide after that :p Thats why they get so disappointed when they are happy with the pup at 6 months & then it doubles in size. Yeah I would have told her I didnt want a unhealthy runt, I preferred my yorkie healthy & at AKC defined standards & then hope she never saw me with my 3.5lb yorkie :) I dont really care what size they are-I love yorkies. Just blow it off that lady was wanting your yorkie:D |
I would have clobbered that woman!!!! |
Ughh what a winner this woman is. I give you alot of credit for not going off on her..... I sure would have. For lack of a better thing to say... Screw her! |

You should have told her off! I can't believe some people. Actually, when I started doing my homework on Yorkshire Terriers, before deciding to purchase one, I found out that the most desired Yorkies weigh between 4 and 7 pounds. The so-called "teacups" (not such a thing) were usually referred to as "health problem" prone. Some breeders try to use extra small Yorkies (many with health issues) in their breeding stock, passing on the health problem issues to the litter. This is not saying that all little furkid Yorkies under 4 lbs are unhealthy, but many have been bred to the extreme, and there are A LOT of health issues!! This info may have ruffled her feathers a bit! :tongue030 It is so sad that people can be ignorant. Worse.... she obviously don't know that much about the breed ...... 2 lbs... spaying..... TOO RISKY if it was my little furbaby! I hope that it does OK..... poor little thing with an ignorant owner! |
People are so RUDE - her yorkie actually isn't 'standard' but you were nice to say nothing to her - I can't believe someone would diss someones pet like that - I know people DO this - but can't believe they're so arrogant to think they actually have a superior dog than you do over a pound or 2....or 3 lol - If she had to do that to you - then she obviously has a very high opinion of her ownself and is probably miserable as a person |
Well, your story just goes to show how imposing some people can be. What does she care..........was she thinking of buying a pup from you? Hardly, she was just a busy buddy. So consider the source and be glad that you don't have to see her again or HEAR her again! |
Girl, you are better then me, I would of had a few choice words for her and then some. That makes me so dang mad!!! I wish someone would say something ignorant like that to me! What a heifer:rolleyes:  :thumbdown |
I feel so sorry for that ladies yorkie. That yorkie baby needs to get rid of that mommy and get a new mommy and just "accept the loss". That mommy just isn't in the yorkie mommy standard, sad...but she needs to go!! |

How despicable can one person be??? And if your kid was a bit overweight would she have said the same thing? I think your Yorkie is going to be a good size and very healthy .... to sell or give away a pet you love is crazy! |

Responsible ones . |
This woman was very rude with you . |
The woman probably saw nothing wrong with what she said if she just sees her babies as an investment. How can someone own one of these beautiful little souls and think like that? I don't have many rerestrained bones in my body and truthfully don't know what I would have said to her. As I was standing in Walmart looking for Giz a Christmas shirt there was a woman doing the same for her Malteese. I picked up the medium one and she asked what kind of dog I had and I said Yorkie. She said my that's an extremey LARGE Yorky isn't it? As I stood there and thought of my fuzzy little bed head at home(11 pounds) with one ear up and one ear down and the face he gives me when he wants to be held, and I just said "more to love". No reason to go off on her, she was just ignorant. Gizmo is larger than a lot of guys on here but have also seen some his size and bigger. |
Wish I could have been there with my Tahlulah. The lady would have choked if I'd have told her Tahlulah was 5 pounds at 4 months, is 7 months and only 5pounds 4 ounces & has been in the ring since she was 6 months old. She now has 4 points towards her AKC Championship. While her lil yorkie maybe cute, it's my opinion your yorkie is more to the standard. |

5 lbs IS tiny! at least to me lol. I can't even imagine 2 lbs Yorkie, Pepper was 2 lbs around 12 weeks of age, but now is over 4. Still, of all the Yorkies I've met, I've seen only one smaller than he is.. And now he doesn't have to wear his annoying bell anymore, I'm not that afraid of stepping on him. He's healthy, his baby teeth fell out on their own, sturdy lil guy that can run for hours. I know he'll be in the upper scale fully grown but I'm happy about that (he doesn't like carriers anyway) - I'll have a great jogging partner for spring :) |
