If Not PETA...then what? I don't know a lot about People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) but when I posted that maybe we should help them put puppymillers out of business there was at least one member who felt PETA was maybe not the appropriate organization for that. Are nay of you members of PETA or know anything about any organizations who help puppymill animals in general? |
I have to say that I don't know the details of the PETA organization but have recently been researching them because of their IAMS cruelty campaign. I started because they had a great job opportunity I was looking into but had to step back and really research such an outspoken organization before accepting a job. I think people have fairly strong opinions about organizations like this and they tend to be either one way or the other. If I find out anything relevant in my research I'll be sure to share! |
i have a friend on another forum thats peta tell what questions you have and ill ask him hes a great guy |
I would just like to know more in general about what they do and how they do it. Are they activists, do they follow the law, are thet total radicals or more moderate and mainstream and what would he suggest if we, as individuals, wan ted ot help in some way? |
i just pmed him give him some time to reply :D |
Peta Kim..shall we start another mess? LOL I am sure there are many great people in Peta..I have not had the pleasure of meeting them. I have had the displeasure of meeting a few who were downright scary! Do you know they were responsible from a poisoning at a dog show a few years ago? I do not agree with killing animals for fur coats, but no one has the right to attack people who do..and I have seen people attacked in NY. I am not in favor of commerical kennels, but sending people undercover to set fires is beyond sane. I think it is no different then some of the radical antitabortionist who feel anything to prevent an abortion is fair..even bombing clinic's and murdering doctors...I do not disagree with the cause, but the way they do it. The puppymill site rescue we talked about on here is the most wonderful organization, also Small Paws..go to their site..she is wonderful!!!!! They buy dogs from auctions.. ALso, I knew an attonery who was former member..she told me she got too much flack for owning dogs. Many peta members are against pet ownership. They are totally against breeding. Even if I was not a breeder I would not be in favorite of making breeding illegal. The problem IMO is Peta targets the wrong people. What do you think is a biggest animal problem in America...I think it is puppymills, but I see Peta doing nothing in that area like the Iams or anti fur stuff. |
[QUOTE=YorkieRose]Kim..shall we start another mess? LOL Definitely not!! :yelrotflm :yelrotflm :yelrotflm |
How about nopuppymills.com...The woman who runs the site is ever so helpful! I know they accept donations..I am sure if u email her from the site she can offer more ways to help them Fran and Sammi :animal-sm |
quote The President of Peta, Ingrid Newkirk said they were against any animal reseach for medical reaspons.. but the Vice President of Peta, Mary Beth Sweetland uses insulin which is the result of these testings..she saw no conflict. They are against the use of Police dogs and seeing eye dogs. |
thanks Thanks Fran...I could not think of her site...if Peta took some of the 14 million they received last year and donated to these types of rescues, it would make a world of difference..Peta made $200,000 in donations out of 14 million. I told you not to get me started...I will stop..sorry. |
Thanks Pat and Fran. You are both a wealth of info! You too Brownie's Mom. Let me know what your friend from PETA says. |
While undoubtedly a bit biased towards one side, here is an interesting website... http://www.PetaKillsAnimals.com |
here what he said first you can get involved as much as you want, it can be as simple as writing letters to senators or joining protest, demonstrations. if your a little shy about getting to invovled you can do the letter writing, theres a section on PETA's website that shows how to write letters well, we are activist, some don't always follow the law.. (to the letter) most do. personally I have broken laws saving animals ( thats me) not all go that far. Theres over a millon PETA members world wide,so you get all types radical, hard core, manestream. Theres lots of ways to be involved with PETA without going to protests and/or demonstrations. www.peta.org i dont know if this answers your questions i think we should be able to have a good conversation here on yt and i hope every stops arguing over everything everyone has there own opinion this is a loving place i hope it stays that way ! |
I guess we may not find one organization that is not controversial at all. I was just hoping to find a way to put some "action" to our words. We are always complaining about puppymills and bad breeders but there doesn't seem to be an organization to report these too that has authority to do anything in a less than radical and legal way. Does anyone know of one? |
mabee we should make our own yt crew ??? lol |
Just to add a little bit more information about PETA, their founding principles are that animals should be totally and completely free. This sounds great on paper, but what it really means is that they feel ALL animals should be released from "imprisonment" by humans, and yes, that even means they are not in favor of people having pets of any kind....even your beloved Yorkie. So when I see someone who loves (and has) pets, and is also a PETA member, it always seems quite contradictory. There seem to be much better organizations out there to stop puppy mills. I typed "Stop Puppy Mills" in Google, and guess what? There's actually www.stoppuppymills.com I know absolutely nothing about this organization, but their "Take Action" tab from the web site seems very good, and not one that is solely promotion for their own gain. They have some good steps of action listed here: http://www.stoppuppymills.com/takeaction.asp Hope this info helps. |
Great site FastEddie. I have some problems with PETA, but I think they make a lot of people aware of a lot of things. They are much too radical/out of control for my taste though. |
Peta As with any organization, a person can be as invoved or uninvolved as they choose..but that does not change the bylaws, or doctrine of that group. I can join a church and go once a year or everyday..the beliefs of the church are the same..is that not correct? I see nothing radical about the rescues we have mentioned here..they attack the problem where it is and put their funding into saving the dogs...I admire the ones who buy from dog auctions..NOmorepuppymills seems tip top to me.JMO |
I have for several years financially supported an org that raises tremendous amts of money to first go to auctions for mostly millers and buy those poor dogs. It gets them out of the cycle of the most horrible of animal abuses. They then vet every single dog and foster it then place it. They unfortunately, can only rescue their chosen breed which is Bichons. SmallPawsRescue is one of the most above-board rescue orgs I have been able to find in my research. I wish that I could say their job is getting smaller, but unfortunately that is not the case. For every miller who loses out on a preg. female at the auctions, another 5 step in and fill in the void and supply these wonderful companion animals to some of the worst of the worst. Babies are piled into un airconditioned vans crate on top of crate and side to side. There is NO space for the driver to even give fresh water. If a dog dies toss it in a garbage can. Don't know it is dying, no prob. wait til it dies and THEN trash it. Now comes the problem of records. Oh, got 3 sets of papers on a crate and only 1 puppy still alive-no prob. Grab a paper, grab a puppy and hand them over to a pre-arranged shop. The broker is the middle man who buys all of the puppies and re-sells to pet shops. One broker peddles as many as 85,000 puppies a year!!!!! Now, if there were no market would they continue to rpoduce them at this rate? Not on your life. There has to be breen stuff-MONEY! These statements are my opinions but are based on over 3 years of researching. You do not have to agree with me BUT you o owe it to your beloved companion animals to take a look for yourselves. Mercy Me! I did it again. I am sorry about getting on the soapbox BUT I am NOT sorry for stating my opinions as each member can do.. |
Maybe we can do what they do for Bichons for Yorkies! |
