Do you like your Yorkie?? Hello-I've been thinking of getting a yorkie, and wanted to know what everybody likes about them, or what you dislike about them. How much time do you spend grooming your Yorkie. Could I do it myself to save some extra cash? -we have a lab. From what I gather from reading, they'll get along. Is this true?? :dog: |
WElCOME !! do i like my yorkie?? HMMMMMMMMMMM i guess so lol what you dislike about them?? Barking How much time do you spend grooming your Yorkie? if his hair is long an hour a week if short 5 mins a week Could I do it myself to save some extra cash? yes its easy its all about trial and error and to remember its just hair and it will grow back they'll get along. Is this true??yes as long as your lab is gentle and there supervised there should be no problems welcome again |
Yorkies are great because they are compact and you can take them places with you. They are super cute as puppies but they also stay cute as adults. They love to give lots of kisses. They love to learn and are easy to train to do tricks. They love to please their owners. They get along with other dogs. If there is anything I would change about mine is that they are yappers. Not everyones are though so thats just my luck I quess. |
My responses are in blue! Hello-I've been thinking of getting a yorkie, and wanted to know what everybody likes about them, She's a good mix of bravado and cuddliness, she's small enough to sit on my lap, but tough enough to give the squirrels a run for their money or what you dislike about them. Sorry, my brain doesn't understand this question ;) How much time do you spend grooming your Yorkie. When her hair was long, about 20 min. a day. Now that it's short, 5 minutes washing her face and putting her hair clip in...and a trip to the groomers every 6 weeks. Could I do it myself to save some extra cash? Many here do! -we have a lab. From what I gather from reading, they'll get along. Is this true?? I would just recommend you stay away from the really tiny ones...they can get hurt so easily, even in friendly play. Plenty of larger yorkies are out there!!! Good luck and welcome to Yorkietalk! Let us know what you decide. :dog: |
Welcome I love my yorkie, in fact I have 4. After owning several I became so enamored with the breed that showing and breeding them became my dream. I groom all of mine myself, figure it saves me about $200. per month. My show dogs are growing coat so it takes alot of grooming but my brood bitches get haircuts. They still look adorable and you'll be surprised how well you'll end up doing after some practise. Be patient with yourself and your baby. As far as getting along every dog is different, just supervise and dote on the old guy. You can get alot of questions answered here. Best of luck, they are just the sweetest little dogs! :D :D :D |
do i like my yorkie?? OBSESSED is more like it! :p :p :p I have 2, and if I could have more, I would have a whole house full! what you dislike about them?? Honestly, I cannot think of a single thing. My 2 are not barkers. If they were, I would say barking. How much time do you spend grooming your Yorkie? I spend about 5 minutes each a day brushing them Could I do it myself to save some extra cash? Absolutely! In fact, I save cash by doing it myself. I definately messed up a couple of times, but their hair always grows back. Now I have gotten the hang of it and am actually pretty good at it. they'll get along. Is this true?? No matter how much you trust your lab, I would not leave the lab and yorkie alone unsupervised, but generally, labs get along great with yorkies. In fact, my husband and I are adding two labradors to our family in the near future and we currently have 2 yorkies. |
Do I like my Yorkie -- I LOVE MY YORKIE! :) I like the way he is so loving, always ready to give kisses, cuddle or play tug-of-war with his toys. I like the way he sounds when he sort of barks. I like the way he does not shed and has a beautiful coat. I like that it shines when I brush him each day, takes only about 10 minutes so far but he is still a baby. (I plan on grooming him myself as his coat grows out. -- I am sure you could learn too. Lots of books and videos to help). I like the way he looks, so sweet with his little teddy bear face. I like the way he is so confident and has no idea he is the littlest member of the household. He is fearless! I like the way he has won over every member of the house from DH and son to the other two canine members -- a dachshund and Jack Russell. He was not to be ignored! I like the way he goes 90 MPH and then just crashes for a nap, waking up ready to start again. I like the way he tilts his little head when I talk to him like he is trying to understand and I like the way sometimes he really does understand what I want. I likes the way he greets me when I come home from an errand like he thought I would never get back. I like his puppy dog breath. I like his puppy dog kisses. I like the way he likes to go with me in the car, trying so hard to see everything at once. I like the way he is sleeping on my feet right now. I like the way he wants one of my shoes to curl up with when he takes a nap if my feet are not handy. I like the way he chases our Jack Russell around the yard and never gives up trying to catch her. I love how his little tail wags at warp speed when he is having fun. I like how he stands on his hind legs and dances around for a treat. I like how he runs up and down on the little carpeted ramp my DH made him for the bed, couch and window seat. I even get a kick out of him hiking his little leg like he is a big dog or something. I don't like that he is not catching on to the potty training and that is the only negative I can come up with -- this will come in time and then....well I guess he will be absolutely perfect! You can't go wrong with a Yorkie! |
:welcome4: We have two Yorkies and one Akita-German Shepard (Luc). We've had Luc for a very long time and I tell you, the two little ones are sooooo much easier to take care of than Luc. We love our big pup, but the difference between the two is significant. Luc has to be taken to the groomers, because it's a challenge to give him a bath in the tub. He also needs his long hair cut. His grooming is pricey. Not to mention getting the kids to pick up his dog poop!! With Luc, we're on a time schedule to make sure he's not in his crate too long. Our two Yorkies are much easier to take care of. I can bathe them both in the sink or in our tub. I learned how to cut their hair, which cuts down on the cost. I comb their hair every day, which doesn't take long. If I need to go anywhere and can't take them, they stay in their play pen. Plus the cost of food is cheaper than Luc's food!! What I dislike about them? Well, my one 7mo. old is potty-trained-challenged. But we're working on it :D We are extremely happy with our two Yorkies and we are actually getting another one after Thanksgiving. Hope you decide to get one too :) |

Dislike: taking while to get potty trained. They dont get it right way like some dogs do. Still its hard to get mad at them for potting on the floor, when they give you that sad little, I am sorry mommy look. How much time do you spend grooming: Well I give my girls a bath every 4 to 7 day.. there just SO low to the ground, everything gets on them. It only takes about 30-40 min to wash, brush and blow dry both of them, but my girls have medium length hair.. but the longer it is.. the more time you spend on it. You can cut your yorkies hair your self, but remember if you mess up... its only hair and it will grow back! It will take a few times of you doing it, till you can get it JUST right. And the question about will a lab get along with a yorkie.... As long as the lab is friendly and is not aggressive in any way, he/she will get a long with a little yorkie. I baby set a lab last week and he LOVED my little 3 lb bella! I think it was love a 1st sight! he would whine every time she fallowed me out of the room. I thought it was SOO cute! |
I OBSOLUTELY ADORE MY YORKIES!!! I LOVE MY YORKIES  :heart to Love - their spirit, little dog complex, smart, small, cuddling, cute little faces, lovable. Dislike - my male is a BARKER. Hair Maintenance. I brush a few times a week, keep my male short and female long. I bath myself when needed and take them to a groomer every 6 weeks. Great dog!! Good luck!! |
welcome to YT Welcome to YT! If you came here expecting to hear people complaining about their Yorkies, you came to the wrong place. We are kind of FREAKISHLY devoted to our little dogs. The evidence: 1--some of the dogs here have larger wardrobes than their owners 2--we build ramps and buy stairs so they can get into bed with us. 3--we kiss our dogs ON THE MOUTH 4--there's a guy from Alaska on this site who has enough film footage of his 2 yorkie boys to make a several feature length movies. 5--If he actually did make feature length films starring his Yorkies, each of us here would pay to see them (but only if we could sneak our own Yorkies into the theater with us). 6--many of us would prefer so spend time at home with our Yorkies than go out and meet other people. 7--some of us actually examine our pup's poop, and if it looks even a little unusual, we'll take a picture of it and post it on this site. 8--Personally, I named my jazz band after my dog (The Edith Jones Project) and I am convinced that she appreciates music. 9--We pay ridiculous amounts to take them on airplanes with us so we won't have to leave them when we go on vacation. Being a Yorkie parent isn't for everyone. It can be a 20 year commitment. I didn't feel that my life was stable and settled enough to have one until I was 42 years old! If you decide to go ahead and bring a Yorkie into your life, Congratulations and welcome to the freak show.... |
I dont think there is a question of how much I love my Yorkies... I have 2 and the only reason I wouldnt want another is I have 3 other pups... the only thing I could possibly not like is they are STUBBORN when it comes to potty training... I have a 95 lb. lab who lives inside with my 16 lb. yorkie and my 4 1/2 lb. yorkie.. they get along super.. my lab and my bigger yorkie are BEST BUDS! They can wrestle, play, sleep, hang out, and just love each other.. If they are your only pups I would also suggest getting a larger yorkie because they make the best of buddies. I also agree never to leave them alone together. LAbs are very gentle but if Laci stepped on my little Hopey by accident it wouldnt be pretty. Good Luck to you! d |
Welcome I love both my Yorkies.:D They are loyal sweet funny cuddle bugs vacumes beggers fetchers. they get along with alomst every one. Huh They sound just like my golden retriver. Although She is 83 pounds and they are 5 and 6 pounds. . I think you would love one. And Stick around here Do some research and see what happens:) I bet you'll be hooked in no time.:wavey: :yorkietal :wavey: |
Why do I love yorkies? See my signature. Grooming time? that depends don how much time you want to spend grooming them. If grooming isn't your thing, keep them in a puppy cut. I love doing mine. they get bathed and hair done every Sunday, and a redo on the hair throughout the week as needed. They learn to sit very patiently, and believe me mine have to be patient. I have no sensation in my hands and tend to get shakey when doing something that requires a steady hand. so it takes me a while, sometimes many trys to get the bands in. |

People who don't own Yorkies will never completely understand your feelings or your behaviors, but we here always will!!! |
I LOVE my 2 yorkies! I bought Lucy in March at 3 months and was so enamoured that I went back in October and got Rebel at 6 weeks. Lucy has short hair on her body but long on top so she gets brushed daily and hair put up. Rebel is just a little furball (11 weeks now) and he gets brushed just a little daily to get him used to it. They both have different personalities that you can see immediately, and are so intelligent it's scary. |
No, I don't like my Yorkie. I LOVE my Yorkie! What do I like best about her? Everything! Except maybe pooping where she is not supposed to, but she is still just a puppy. What do I like least about her? See the previous answer. As my puppy school instructor says, puppies don't fail, people fail their puppies. Grooming? Maybe an hour a week. We both enjoy that time together anyway. |
my yorkie is great. i adore him. i treat him as my child. likes- compact, hypoallergenic,non-shedding,lovable,cute,smart, he's my best friend. dislikes- a little yappy grooming 4 us is not a problem. he has a puppy cut. (no knots or daily combing required) i get him groomed about every 3 months and my mom trims him up in between. romeo is very social. he likes labs and all big dogs. i believe if they are well socialized as pups they will play well with others. |
Ooooh, I forgot to add that not only do we here at YT love our own yorkies, but we also follow other's Yorkies. We know them by photo, name, and their owner's YT username. And we talk so much about them that our family knows these names and photos also!!! We worry when they are sick and we cry and grieve when they cross to the Rainbow Bridge. So, welcome to the family!! |
Do I like my yorkies? No. I dearly love both of them more than I do most people! They are always soo happy to see me when I come home, even if I was only gone 5 minutes! They are lovable, and great lap dogs! Don't get one if you don't want them to sleep in the bed with you though. Sleeping in the bed with you, is almost mandantory! My 2 are so entertaining too! The things they'll fuss over. Also when I go out of town, nobody ever mind Adonis coming too. He's no trouble at all. I haven't been out of town since I got Venus though. I can't think of much I dislike about either. But I do get aggitated trying to train my new one. My 5 year old is an angel. Now my 5 month old has chewed a lot of things, I wish she hadn't. And like any dog, till you get them trained like you want them, it will be aggitating at times. Time spent grooming...one my older one about 5 minutes a night. I've kept his body hair short. Most of the 5 minutes is redoing his top knot. Now the baby, since I got the cowboy magic, about 20 minutes a night at the most. She's got to where she falls alseep when I comb her matts out. Can you do it yourself? Sure, but some is trial and error, and it takes buying some stuff to get started with. I know if I took my baby to get groomed, they'd shave her before they'd take time to get the mats out. Using the stuff that was recommended here, I get them out easy! They look impossible, but a little cowboy magic goes a long way! I'd never take either of mine to a groomer, I trust nobody cutting my babies hair! I can't say whether she'll get along with your lab or not. My sis has 3 larger dogs. Adonis knows which ones are freindly, and he does tend to stay away from the yellow lab, who's been known to growl at him. My older yorkie, loves all dogs, and is a very friendly dog. So is Venus but she's a little young to socialize a whole lot yet. |
I adore our Yorkie. I used to be an avid film/movie go-er. But now I can hardly stand being away from Lucinda that long! When we went to New York in September we forked out the 160.00 so that she could fly with us. We plan on going out of the country in 2007 and as eager as I am to go to Thailand, I already dread being away from her. We have two cock-a-poos. One is 8 and one is 4. They weigh over 20 pounds each. Lucinda completely holds her own with both of them. They are now a very compatiable pack of 3. I have also owned other dogs and I must tell you that what I read on the internet is true...Yorkies are not like other dogs. They are so interesting,so inquisitive, so intentional! And of course, captivating to look at....so cute!!!! I can not put into writing what it is that is so different about them from other breeds but they are in their own class. It took me awhile to adjust. It was this web site that helped me to understand her. Lucinda is not a yapper. She became completely housetrained at 7 months...she uses a doggie door like the other 2 dogs. Read about them on this site for awhile so that you will be aware of how it is to raise a Yorkie. I would have a dozen if I could! |
I love my little boy to pieces!! Getting him was one of the best decisions I've ever made!! :) |
It's funny that I saw your post just now while I am watching our 7 yr old yellow lab giving kisses to our 3 month old yorkie. When we first brought Butch home I didnt know if they would ever get along, now less that 1 month later they chase each other around the house or the yard and give each other kisses. I agree that their play should be supervised especially with a puppy, but Shooter and Butch are buds now and usually get along just fine. elli and Butch:aimeeyork and Shooter |
I've been trying to decide between a Yorkie and a Havanese. I just cann't decide and need to do a little bit more poking at everybody. I'm convinced I love the yorkie, but I don't wanna get a dog that's not gonna fit in well. (being too small and compact, even though that's what I love). I'm just afraid that what I love isn't gonna fit in well. Am I just being way to Paranoid?? I just cann't decide, and its' driving me crazy. Rascal, our lab (female-60lb) is very mellow, and I wouldn't doubt she will be gentle with a yorkie. I have two older brothers in college, so they're not home much, but when they are, she sometimes playes rough with them. otherwise is plopped on the floor chewing something or of course slepping. When they're not home, all she does is sleep on the floor and never gets up. Personally, to her, I think a yorkie would just be a little squirt roming around the house. I doubt if she'll even care. one of my moms friends knows someone who has a yorkie, and they say it's kinda "snotty". I've never heard that before, and that's what's kinda turning me off about the Yorkie, plus it's tiny size (which is what I like, but maybe it would be just too small). But with the Havanese, it's a little bit bigger. I just love tiny dogs, and that's where the yorkie fits in, but it seems like the Havanese more "stockyness" might be a little bit better for living conditions. What do you think?....I feel like my heart falls for the yorkie, but somehow I feel like it wouldn't work out right. I have no idea why I feel that way. I know Rascal is gonna be fine, and I know that I'm gonna love having an adorable little dog to love. Maybe by spring, when I'm planning on buying, I'll have made up my mind, which one I really like and will work out well. Thanks everybody for the replies, I'm just not sure where I'm going yet. I've been meaning to get to a pet store **just to look**at the two. I know it's easy to fall in love with puppies, but I just want to see and get to know them both before making my move. contacting breeders and going to shows are also something I might try. |

I love my yorkies. (we have 2) I also have a chocolate lab mix, who loves them both dearly. He'd probably protect them with his life if it came to that. I'm not sure what your mom's friend meant by them being "snotty", unless she meant that they don't like going out in the rain or something like that. And you could get a bigger yorkie. That way, you wouldn't have to constantly worry about it being safe or getting hurt. My yorkie Tucker is 14 pounds, he thinks he can fly and has tried it a few times, and he's never gotten hurt. Same with my other yorkie Maddie, who's 6 1/2 pounds. And also about looking at the dogs at pet stores, they may have different personalities than dogs from breeders. Like, the pet store in the mall around here has yorkie puppies. And I had always thought that the personality that those dogs had (sleepy, chewy, yappy) was how they all were. But after getting one from a breeder, they're actually a lot different. Good luck!!!!! :D |
lexi was the best thing i ever have gotten in my life.....the breed is just fantastic, i wouldnt trade her for the world.. the only thing that i dont like and bothers me to no end is when she pees and poops on my floor... and thats it...... ......other than that i love her to pieces...... |

I adore my chester boy so much, I do not know what I would do without him, he is a cuddler, he knows all of his commads, he is very smart, he loves his momma so much he would go after a pit bull to save me, they are great watch dogs chester hears everything but he is not a yaper, people that do not like little dogs adore chester, he loves kids, people and cats. I would rather stay home with him that visit most of my friends. We just went on a 3200 mile raod trip together and he is a great traveler start the early, socialize them alot and take them to puppy classes, I did with chester, when I come home from stressful hospital work he is so excited to see me, they love to be with their people, I keep his hair short and groom every 8 wks or so. I would do anything for this dog and if anybody laid a hand on him it would not be pretty. |
And the potty training........how long can a baby wait B/4 having to be let out to potty? Do you take them with you before they're totally potty trained, or can they stay home a couple hours. Do they catch on after a couple months or how long does it take?? After they're trained, they're leave-able at home..right? I mean, of course not for hours on end, but like for a little while. (like....3-4 hours) Some people say they're trustable 6 hours...???? .......:questione |
