"I know a woman that trains puppies and she says that at 12 weeks, that is much too late to send them to their new home. She knows her stuff, so I listen to her, but I'm sure the opinion differs."

I'm sure you trust her opinion but 12 weeks is certainly not too late to begin training a new puppy. What about all the adult dogs that are adopted later in life? From 8 to 12 weeks is a very important time in a dog's socialization process. An extra week or two with their litter mates won't hurt a puppy even if their moms don't want them around.

Yes, IMO he still needs the time with his mother and siblings.

I would not take a puppy home before 10 weeks and 12 weeks would be preferable. These yorkies are very fragile and can go from healthy to sick very quickly.

I'm curious to know if you got him today or not. Did you talk with the breeder? Was she willing to keep him longer?

I did indeed talk to the breeder. He is 8 weeks and I did bring him home today. She said if there are any problems, to call her. He is a bundle of joy. Stay around everyone. I will be coming here for lllooootttssss of advice!

I got Bailey when she was just under 8 weeks and she was fine. She was fully weaned and I took her to the vet the day after I got her and she was given a clean bill of health.

I havent had any health problems with her at all :) She's a healthy, happy, active puppy

Way to young, mine didn' t get to come home until she was almost 14wks.

I didn't get Piper until she was almost 14 weeks because she was so small the breeder was afraid to ship her. She ended up shipping her anyway at 1.3 lbs, which was small. She was so sick the 1st couple of months, I thought we'd loose her. Now at almost 7 months we are having problems with her liver.
I think 7 weeks is way to young, but I also think size makes a difference also if they are being shipped.

Mine were very young, 5 and 6 weeks when I got them. But it was fine...and they turned out ok!

I find with my puppies the weaning process puts stress on them. Very Good Advise!!!!!!! Find another breeder, that breeder does not care about the future of that baby, all she wants is the money!!!!!! Yorkies need to be with their mom till 12 at the youngest to 16 weeks!!!!!, sometimes longer if you want a well adjusted, sound, and healthy puppy!

I brought Hobbs home at 8 weeks and Hootie home at 7 weeks and both of them turned out perfectly fine and healthy. GOOD LUCK with your new addition!!!!!!! What breeder in Alabama did you get your little guy from? Where in Alabama are you from? I'm in Huntsville and got my 2 from Guntersville.

Sadly, letting pups go that early is not at all uncommon here.:( 8 weeks is actually towards the "old" end of the spectrum. I'm not really sure why that is...well, not that I feel like getting into anyway.:rolleyes:

Most breeders here let them go at 8 weeks too

Well let me just say that yes that is really young. BUT.... I have had one since she was about 4.5 to 5 weeks old. She is a Yorkie / long haired Chihuahua mix. She is SOOOO tiny and yes it was very hard at first. Now she is almost 7 weeks. She is very healthyand VERY active. As long as you have others dogs in the house and they get along then everything should work out.

Keira and Diesel are the best of friends. They weren't at first and now they are so good together! Believe it or not even our German Shepherd gets along well with her. You have no idea just how funny it is to see a dog that isn't even 1 pound chase a 90 pounder!!

Yes, I think that is very young but I also think that it can work! Congrats and good luck with your new pup!

Agree with you there. Mine are usually 4 - 5 months, often older. :) :smile:

yep i think i posted this before but most people here sale them at 6 weeks.
