Doggie doors for yorkies? Hello! I just joined the forum this morning. Our family has had a female yorkie for three weeks now. She is almost three months old and we are working on house training her. I've read that yorkies are pretty hard to house train, so we've been pretty patient and keep her confined to her pen when we're not home, in her crate in our room at night, in the backyard when we can watch her, or in our arms or on a leash. My question is, when she is eventually house trained, is it alright to have a small doggie door where she can come in and out to go pottie? We would do this when she is a bit bigger, but I was wondering what the opinion was of this? Thank you. Molly's mom http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...imeeyorkie.gif |

First of all congrats and welcome. I guess I've been lucky I housetrained 3 yorkies over the years and they were all completely trained by the time they were around 6 - 7 months old. So in my experience they are not hard to house train. It just takes patience and consistency. We put a doggie door in back in Feb of this year my youngest was only 7 months old and I absolutely love it. I will never be without one again. They both come and go as they please when we are home. Even when it's closed off, when I'm gone I've only came home to an accident 1 time. I can't say enough about how great I think this doors are. Good Luck with house training. Keep us posted. |

We got ours from petsmart it's called petsafe. It's not really that heavy. It took Mollie a few days to start going in and out when we first got it, Wyatt went out immediately. All I had to do was hold a treat on the other side. Now they both go in and out no problems at all. Ours is up to 10 or 12 lbs I think sorry, I can't remember. |
Welcome to YT. We love ours too! We have the kind where it only lets Katy in or out. She has a little attachment on her collar. Best move we ever made. Of course it also depends on your area (Hawks and Eagles) and how secure your yard is. |
I have doggie doors for each of my yorkies in the kennel, they have there own runs to play in, They love running in and out those doors and if the doors are open no accident in there bedroom and if there close I have one who will not dirty his bedroom for nothing he was house trained first he waits until I open his door to do his thing. The others have only one accident for me the next morning. WE love are doggie doors. |
I put in a doggie door in my storm door. The guys learned to use it instantly, and the love it. I got mine at Menards, the brand is Pet safe. It has a two part plastic flap that is held shut with magnets. |
I would love to be able to give Ferdinand a doggie door, however I never will because of the area we live. There are too many threats. The owls, coyotes, and javelinas would all attack him in a heartbeat. Plus the little creatures that he would be curious of like scorpions. Do you have coyotes in your area? |

Oh my sounds like a dangerous place to have a little dog. We have the threat of hawks. But their fenced area is not very large. It's a 20 x 20 patio. I also have coyotes, but they don't venture that close to the house and , there are plenty of rabbits for them to eat. I suppose we have owls too, but i wouldn't think they would come that close to the house either. |

This is the same kind that we have. |
doggy doors I'd be frightened of the two legged predators in addition to the coyotes and hawks and things........bee/wasp stings when you aren't home ......eating lizards that are TOXIC........so many dangers await our babies when we can't be with them outside....... I would love to live in a world where my yorkies can go outside alone..but I don't.. for those of you unfamiliar with "Bull Baiting", the two legged predator will snatch small dogs/cats and hang them with fishing poles for "fighting" pit bulls to kill (practice?????????!!!!). I live in North Carolina and this goes on all over the country........ roxanne:animal-pa |
I thought about getting a doggy door too. But I worry about it leaking air. How are they with keeping the air out? |

Oh I never let mine go out when I'm not here, I close the inside door. I'd be too afraid that they might somehow get out of the fence. |
