if we should only breed yorkies that are breed standard then this is what your yorkie should be like. compact and neat dog not to long in the back with a air of confidence, vigour and a substance about him belying his size. small and lively extrovert character with sprit intelligent with an air of importance, it should not be shy timid or apprehensive. long hair on body perfectly straight it should reflect the light and be fine silky texture. colour dark steel blue coat long and shaded, rich golden tan falls on face head chest and legs, however the colour should not be silver blue. there should be no tan on the neck. hair on cheast should be rich bright tan and should be darker at the roots than the middle, shading to lighter on the ends. the steel blue coat should be even in colour not striped or patchy. the head should be flat on top, a pretty kitten face is not typical of the breed, nose eye rims and nails should all be black. the eyes should be dark black not brown, and should not bulge. ears small and erect well placed on head and not to far apart, no rounded tip. no low set ears or located in the ten to two position. teeth should have a scissor bite so incisors of the upper jaw slide neatly past the outside of the lower ones when the teeth are closed on each other, no missing teeth crooked or misplaced teeth, jaws should be even. having only four incisors instead of 6 in each jaw is also a fault. the back should be straight and not curving down to its tail, curved ribcage is needed. straight front legs when viewed from the front also back legs when looked at from the rear. golden tan no higher than the elbows and no higher than the stifle. round feet neat and compact. tail deeper shade at the end of the tail. weight no more than 7 pound. so if your dont isnt all this its not breed standard.

The AKC Standard set April 12, 1966 says the tail is docked. So, noone with a Yorkie with a docked tail knows for sure....

PS - I can personally vouch for Coco because I've seen her in person and she is OMG to die for!! But I swear she has the longest tongue that always manages to find it's way up your nose!! :p :p Give her kisses from her auntie!

true but i dont think it should be changed just cos there are bigger yorkies i think it should be changed for the good of the breed. if it was 4 or 5 pound and up to say 10 pound i think thats healthy, it how small they are getting which worrys me.:)

also i think shes a little cutie but to me it looks like she has a little white or silver on her chest which would be a fault in the show ring to a judge so would not fit breed standard. which is silly as shes a cutie.:)

my ideal would be 2 classes for yorkies like they use to have when they were first in shows, small would be 4 to 8 pound and large would be 9 and up. other dogs have 2 classes and yorkies use to have 2 classes so why not again? :) also if the breed standard had a limit on how small they are it might stop the trend of these tinies as a fashion item and if people knew they where not breed standard then they wouldnt pay so much for them and these horrible breeders wouldnt make so much money from them. if there were 2 classes of yorkshire terrier then maybe people with a larger one wouldnt be asked if it was a yorkie as the larger yorkie would be well known. if you go to buy a pup the breeder could tell you that its a small or large yorkie pup so you would have some idea on what your buying. mindyou not that anything is for sure. i can understand why people that went to get a small yorkie and ended up with a big one would be disapointed just the same as the wrong colour or floppy ears, breeders should be more honest and say well its a small pup now but hopefuly it will stay that way not promice it will when they dont no for sure.

Right on! Although Yorkies should be breed to the breed standard, it took 100's of years to get them that way, it is so important to keep the breed to the standard. I will not breed a Yorkie over 7 lbs. However if it is your beloved pet and if you are keeping the puppies and getting them all fixed, or sell them fixed, No one can tell you what to do, all yorkies are wonderful, it is just best to stick to the standard. Good luck with your discission, if you really want to breed a little girl, you should think about purchasing a little girl who will be the right size and keep the intergrity of the Yorkshire where it should be. You will be proud of yourself and the puppies for doing the right thing!

Now that is the truth! I had a client come over for stud service from one of my smaller male Toy Poodles. His girl was a taller Toy Poodle but she spread her legs to make herself shorter.....LOL. It was funny to watch.

Thanks, she is a cutie :D She actually does not have white or silver on her chest, it is the same color golden brown that is around her face and legs. Here is a more clear picture of her taken recently. Her only non-standard feature is she's longer in the legs, which is probably what they would find fault with. But again that's why I said I didn't pay for a potential champion or show dog. She is as close to the standard as many pet quality yorkies. But I'm not breeding her, nor should others with pet quality. You can have a show quality, perfectly standard yorkie, without placing it in the ring.
