I don't know what else to do!! I'm going to lose it! Yes I am about to lose it!!! As some might know Mimi is a BIG time chewer. She chews everything in site. Here is a list of some things she's chewed that I can think of off the top of my head: walls rug furniture 2 gameboy controllers plus the GB wall adaptor phone shoes belt curtains kitchen cabinets Oh and the blinds in my living room which I just replaced. The news ones weren't up 1 day and she already chewed them up. And to top it off this morning she found my glasses (old ones I wear to bed to watch TV when I take my contacts off) She chewed them up..even broke some of the glass and I couldn't find the piece of glass that broke off. ...hope she didn't swallow it. I just don't know what else to do...I was soo mad at her this morning and I do feel bad because she was trying to give me love and I didn't even want to look at her. I use Bitter apple which works but she'll find something else to get into and then I guess when the bitter apple wears off she goes back to the area. Any suggestions? I've put everything away in my house because of the chewing. I know this is not the way to do it but I just don't know what else to do. She's got plenty of toys to chew on. I even got her a kong to see if that would help. She's also got bully sticks, pig ears...etc.... Also, her daddy lets her get away with murder and I think he should correct her too but he doesn't. He tells me that she is a baby and she's his girl. My poor little Timmy...he is such an Angel!! I think she's got second child syndrome...lol |
The only thing you can do is keep things ut up and use bitter apple and deodorant on things you dont want her to chew. Chachi stopped most of his chewing by a year old. He will still chew up my daughters small toys occasionally if she leaves one out |
I'm sorry you're dealing with this. :( The only other thing I've heard is cayenne pepper. Of course...it won't work on all surfaces, but maybe rugs and such? Good luck! |

Is it okay to use that? I really need to do something because I'm spending too much money trying to replace things. I told my fiancee that he needs to be firm with her sometimes and he just laughs and hold her and give her kisses. I feel like I'm the bad one because I have to be firm with her...I think thats why she doesn't cuddle with me and gives me kisses like Timmy does :( |

I'd be afraid of them getting the pepper in their eyes. |
How old is she. If she is just a pup, she'll outgrow it. Maybe limit her space? Until she outgrows it. |
I haven't tried the cayenne pepper personally, but it was recommended to me by a friend who used it with their pom with success. I googled it quickly, and saw it's pretty commonly recommended and used. Two other suggestions I read on that quick search: tabasco sauce, and spraying a pepper/vinegar mixture. |

She's 7 months old. When I am home we are always watching her. I started to confine them to a area while at work and that didn't last very long. I know this is bad since they have the house to themselves but the reason why I did this is because I had a baby gate up with 2 chairs in front of the gate and she would jump over. I know she was hitting herself pretty bad when she landed on the other side so then I went out and bought another gate and placed that one on top of the other...I don't know how in the world they were doing this but by the time I came home they were loose. Then I noticed one day she was limping and I know it was because she must have made it to the other side and fell. So then my fiancee and I decided it was best to let them loose while we were gone. I do push the couch forward so she will not eat up the blind and I spray the furniture and walls with bitter apple and place a gate in front of the computer so she cannot get underneath and chew the cords. The only thing she gets at now is the area rug which is going in the trash when I move (I'm buying a house). I had to put everything up because of her but sometimes she manages to get a hold of things and destroy them. How old do you think she'll be until she grows out of this? Sorry for the long post.:D |

I would definately go back to limiting their space. |
Chewing When I see Molly Chewing on the wrong thing. I take it away. Tell her no. Then I give her something she can chew. Better Than Ears treats. It looks like a pig ear but is made out of digestible ingredients. Plus they don't make a mess. They are puppies and they are teething. Maybe if you give her a safe alternative you will have better luck.:) |
My dog we had when I was a teenager was a chewer he loved the blinds I remember we would raise them 1/2 up so Bucky couldn't get them. I can't suggest anything else, as Grayson isn't to bad knock on wood Sorry you are going through this! |
I would suggest crating her for her own safety. She is definitely to young to have full run of the house. If she is that much of a climber and chewer than she could really get into trouble when you are not there. It is not cruel to crate a puppy especially if it keeps them safe. I would only let her out when you are home and can give her 100% attention. It should only be a few more months until she stops her chewing but you need to nip this behavior in the bud for her own safety. |
Thanks for everyone's advice. I know I have to do something about this and I will. I can't wait to get into my new house because they will have their own bedroom so when I'm at work I'll just leave them in their room. |
I know what your going through and it is very frustrating for sure. I never knew yorkies could jump like rabbits. He jumped the gate in the kitchen and chewed up a rung on the dinning rm chair. I added another gate and he was miserable and I bought every contraption under the sun due to his baking when I left in the am. Living in a condo we could not have that! He won and I then left him in the open house. Hence 13 throw rugs later, all corners gone he started on the corner of the skirt on the couch. When I saw that I lost it. I really think I scared the crap out of him because he never touched another things after that, however, I did spray bitter apple all over the house. Better late than never. Someone told me about it after the fact but it saved his life! He was then 1 1/2yrs. Until the other night, he chewed the arms off my glasses, he has touched nothing! Has she ever chewed up something your fiancee liked? I'm just wondering cause I know with Baloo my hubby wouldn't tell the puppy to stop chewing at first until he tried going after the tv speakers...hubby did a complete 180. And like others have suggested I would confine them until they've mastered what it means to be a good dog within that one room and then expand their surroundings. We're having the same problem with Baloo being able to climb out of his x-pen and over baby gates, so we're getting a top cover for the x-pen shortly. I hope you figure out a solution cause I'm sure in 3 months or so Baloo will be going through the same thing and I'll be posting asking all sorts of questions on how to fix it!! :D Goodluck! |
