How can I keep neighbors cat out of my yard My pups go crazy almost every time they go in the back yard because there is a big cat hanging out there. I would like to figure out how to keep it out of my yard because when my hubby sees it in the yard he lets the Yorkies out and tells them "get that cat". They TEAR out the door and try to attack the cat which is bigger than they are. Once the cat just froze cowering in fear and couldn't figure out what to do. I ran and grabbed my dogs so that the cat wouldn't claw them. Today they ran for the cat and it figured out how to jump the fence to get away. My hubby thinks it is cute to see the pups chase the cat but I am afraid they will get HURT. I am trying to get my husband to realize that if "anyone" gets hurt it will probably be the Yorkies. Is there anything I can put in the yard to "repel" the cat that won't hurt my dogs? Any other suggestions? |
i have the same problem with my neighbors cats theres nothing you can do that wont hurt your yorkies also i do the same as your husband but brownie is alot larger so i dont worry so i guess i was no help is there alway of putting moth balls where you yorkies cant get the at all but still chase that cats they will work |
One of my best friends has a Yorkie who had to have an eye removed because of a cat's claw. If you don't know who it belongs to I think I would consider trying to catch it, put it in a crate and take it to the humane society or shelter. Keeps your dogs safe and keeps it from getting hit by a car or shot if it irritates the wrong homeowner. |
The first time we saw it my husband tried to pick it up and it hissed at him in a really threatening manner. My husband is a "cat person", but it even scared him. I walked around the corner and saw an elderly man with an oxygen line, calling "Casper, Casper, where are you?" in a weak voice. I told him I think his cat is in my backyard and scaring my dogs. He came over (2 houses away) and had to stop twice just to breathe. He crawled under our rv and got his cat out. He had to catch his breath again after that. My husband said thats no excuse to just let your cat run loose, but I couldn't do that to him, it could be his only companion, his reason for living, if you know what I mean. Hubby thinks if the Yorkies scare the crap out of the cat he won't come back. I just worried that it will hurt my babies. |
All I can say is good luck. My neighbor has like close to 10 cats and my yard is their toilet. I have tried everything with no luck |

I have 6 foot and 8 foot board fencing enclosing my back yard, and they still get in! There was a litter back there, was 3-4 black cats..one day. And also like you one time, the cat froze, luckily, so did my dog! That really scared me too, knowing a cat can put an eye out when scared enough. I don't know of a thing you can put outside, that your dogs won't also be able to get into. When I see the black cat that pops up from time to time, I scare it off. A really loud PSSSSS, and a clap of the hands. It almost flies over my board fence!! It took a while, but I haven't seen them in the back yard for some time now. Keeping fingers crossed here! |
One natural remedy that you can "try" is orange peels. It is like the opposite of catnip for some cats. This won't always work, but it is worth a try. Just take a potato peeler or a grater and grate the peel of the orange around the yard. Like I said, it may or may not work, apparently what works for one cat doesn't work for all cats (much like yorkies, I guess):D |
1 gal glass bottles I had a neighbor in hawaii that did this he swore it worked 1 gallon glass bottles filled with water around the border or the yard I dont know why he swore by it |
We have had the same problem with neighbor cats on our balcony. (1) Try talking to your neighbors, emphasizing how annoying barking dogs can be, if this does not work (as it did not for us); (2) Catch the cat and start dumping large volumes of water at it (which worked for us only for a time); but then we purchased this which keeps them away and is not harmful (3) http://www.nextag.com/ultrasonic-cat...nt/search-html and it has worked, and we are all at peace. |
I don't think I would really worry about it ---- I'm sure the cat will soon find better places to visit than your yard. You should tell your husband to "chase the cat" instead of having the dogs do it. Anyway - I'm sure the cat will be gone before long. Carol Jean |
You could try my fathers solution to this problem. He hated cats getting in his garden and he would spray them with a water hose and after a couple times the cat would not return. |

Even a dog who likes the "get the cat" game.:D Hubby is VERY allergic to cats...we have medical bills to prove it.:( We have a MAJOR problem w/ people not keeping their cats up...yes it's a no-no where I live, but no one has ever enforced it, so...:( I tried asking the owners, who all took turns with the claim, "well, my cat doesn't leave my yard or EVER get on cars, it must be theirs." Then when I got no help from them, I invested in a live animal trap (less expensive than med bills!) and started catching kitties. After about the 3rd one had to be retrieved from the no-kill cat shelter 20 miles away, they became indoor kitties.;) :thumbup: |
