Sometimes young 1st time mothers get a bit overzealous with the cleaning and the cord. Hopefully that's what it is and things are moving along there ok now. |
CC...I sure hope that's it. Has she pm'd you her phone number yet? |
Don't worry everyone, I just did a quick search of the internet and there was nothing about dogs "eating their young". They talked about rabbits doing it sometimes because they don' have the instinct like dogs or cats who protect their young. I am sure Heather has talked to her vet or her mentor and she is just too busy with the whelping to get back to the computer. Let's assume the best at this point otherwise I on't be able to sleep. |
No but she is probably very busy, or maybe someone had her number already. She is off line now so all must be being taken care of. :) |
Angel has calmed down a little but we had to seperate her from the first puppy. The animal hospital said to leave her alone and let nature take its course for now. I dont think she was eating the afterbirth. she was biting down hard and trying to carry the pup away. keep praying everyone :( we dont know what to do |
Has your mommy had any more pups? Good luck! I will be thinking about you and your yorkies and will definatly say lots of prayers for you.. I hope all goes smoothly from here on. Can you take them into the vet tonight if needed? Do you have a little bottle to feed the 1st baby if the mom still isnt accepting her? |
Sounds like she is wanting to move the pup to where she is comfortable whelping. It doesn't sound like she's wanting to hurt the pup, just hide it. If your whelping box is open a bit of cover on the top sometimes helps if they are nervous about having things or people around. I have one that if I don't pen her in a x-pen in her box she will carry the pups to my bed when I'm not looking. LOL It will be ok, remember to breathe........... ;) |
She was trying to dig into him even after she chewed through the cord. I had to stop her. Should I put her under the tanning bed with her (where's she's hiding) until the next puppy comes? She doesn't seem to be contracting and it's been an hour and 40 minutes since this one was born. Im not sure how long to wait on her contractions before something may be wrong. Any help you have PLEASE send my way... |
OMG I hope everything is ok please keep us updated as much as you can i am praying for you and your baby... maybe you should call the vet and have them talk to you to give you osme relieve!! Goodluck.. stay clam.. breathe! |
Do you have a breeder's phone number? Someone on here, or a breeder you talked to from YTCA? It sounds like you need some experienced breeder advice who will just stay on the phone with you until it's over. |
I am not a breeder so I am hesitant to give advice but I will anyway... I had a golden retriever years ago and I was with her while she gave birth. I made a bed for her in my closet so she would have her own privacy, after each baby would come out she would grab it with her teeth, clean it up and chew the cord off, then she would place then near her chest so they can eat. IF I was you I would put the mother somewhere she will feel privacy, but make sure its a place you will be able to get in there and reach her if needed. And I would put the baby by her chest to see if she will let him eat, its worth a try, if she attacks it then you'll know its not the thing to do, but if she lets him eat and she licks him, she is probably just doing what her insticts tell her to do. Maybe you can place the puppy to eat and pet her at the same time trying to comfort her? Be calm, gently talk to the mother and tell her everything is ok, I bet you being calm will help her alot right now. GOOD LUCK!! Were all standing by thinking of you and sending you our prayers. |
I wish I could help, all I can do is add my prayers that everything will be fine. |
If she is resting and not pushing or looks in distress she should be fine for now. The pup nursing would help the contractions along. If she is hiding under a tanning bed you won't have good access to her if your needed. If you don't have a way to cover the whelping box and keep her in that area, maybe a closet would work. You may want let the pup to her so it can nurse and she can clean it with your supervision. Speak calmly to her, its her first time. You can remove the pup if she gets to rough or starts whelping another pup. Make sure the pup is kept warm. Never hesitate to call your vet and ask for their suggestions and help. I wish I could be of more help but its hard to do via message board. :( |
Just a little insight I found from the internet if it has been more than 40 mins since the 1st pup was born and she isnt having another one and you know there is another one in there you need to call you vet asap.. Hope this helps some goodluck!!! remember everything will be OK!!! |

I tried putting the puppy back with her but she keeps dragging it wherever she goes. At one point she tried to suffocate him. He got really cold because she wouldnt stay on the heating pad. I just put her box in the closet and she's in there with the lights off. She's scratching at the door though trying to get out. I just don't know what to do. I called the animal hospital yet again and told them its been almost 2 1/2 hours since she had the first pup and she is not even contracting. They said not to worry nless she seems to be in pain or has been pushing for long periods of time without another puppy appearing. Ugh I am so confused. When all is said and done, Angel and Prince are BOTH getting fixed. End of story! |
You can hold her and let the pup nurse for a bit, then put it back on the heating pad. If it were me I would let her whelp where she wants to, only stepping in when you need to. Mine always want me at their side but not all females are like that. Some want let alone some. |
Just stay calm you seem to be getting annoyed... Everything will be OK just keep in close contact with the animal hospital just in case something does turn for the worse... Try to comfort the mother to let her let her baby nurse she may be in pain and just want to not be bothered for the moment... Just whatever you do keep the tiny baby WARM!!!! Goodluck keep us posted!!! This is so exciting but scary at the same time! |
OMG IT'S ABOUT OVER! All 3 have been born. 2 boys and a girl. They are all breathing on their own and screaching away. Angel is taking to them just fine now and is being a good mommy. We're just waiting for her to pass the last placenta. I cant thank all of you enough. This means a lot to me!! If there is EVER anything I can do to repay my thanks, please, just let me know!!!!!! |
CONGRATS!!!!! |
Congratulations . |
Congratulations for the new babies . Take care of you and have a good sleep . |
Thank you all SOOOOOO much! I don;t think i'll be sleeping though. SHe still hasn't passed that last placenta. She's on her bed with her new pups and they are feeding. I haven't even cleaned her up yet. I didn't wanna bother her. I figured she would be sore and she's busy with the pups anyway. Maybe I should use this no rinse shampoo anyway?? She seems tired but she's in good spirits. Giving kisses and resting her eyes. She's drinking water but wants no food. As of right now her temp is 100.9 so everything seems ok so far (except the placenta) I think her vet will open in an hour so I will call them and see what they recommend. Again thank you ALL for everything. The support, the advice and most of all, the compassion! You all rock! |
Wow Great news....I missed it all. I went out last night and look what Angel did...LOL Wonderful news..the vet will give her shot to clean her out...glad all is well. Don't YOU feel like you gave birth? LOL |
Congrats! :D |
I have been following your posts from the begining. I have never bred and had to expierence any of what you have went through. So I really did not have any advise for you. But I did want to say congradulations on the new pups. And that I am glad to see everything worked out for the best! |
Congratulations on the new litter! Good job Heather and Angel! Whew!! |
Congratulations!! I have been following these posts & I feel absolutley exhausted!!! I can't imagine how Angel feels!! I'm glad she's a good mommy & good luck with everything! |
Thanks so much everyone!!!!!!!!!!! I know I seemed like a nutcase last night and I apologze. I got scared when she kept biting the pups. She actually came runing out with the second one in her mouth justl imp as can be. That was the female and I had to revive her. She's just fine now though. Well, that was a night I will NEVER forget lol. I was scared for the pups but all worked out VERY well! Angel and the puppies have an appointment today to see the vet. They are gonna check to see if angel passed the last placenta and if not they will give her a shot. The puppies look good and are feeding just fine off of her. THe first one was male (6oz), second was Female (4.5 oz) and the was Male (5 oz). They are ADORABLE. The first male has a white stripe down his tummy from chin to wee-wee lol The others area all blackish brown for now. Im so F***in tired though. I dozed off at 6:30am and wok up an hour ago (10am). I don't wanna sleep though because it's my guy's turn to rest. Angel isn't eating though just drinking water. Should I give her the bitch energizer so he has nutrients in her body? |
Congratulations! I am so happy everything turned out okay! Last night when I was reading your posts I did some searches on the internet and remember it saying the mother won't be interested in eating for about 24 hours after delivery, so her not eating right now must be the norm! What a long night you had...hope you can get some rest! Best wishes to you and yours! |
Longest friggin night of my life lol. I got more rest when I gave bith to MY kids lol. Yeah she doesn't want food but she's drinking water. So atleast she wont dehydrate. I need to clean her up though. SHe has dried blood on her. You think a bath would be ok? I know with women they say not to bathe after delivery for a few weeks. Showers only. SO maybe I can just use a cup and pour the water over her. I gotta get between her legs though. She's got some dried yuckies down there and a bit on her face. |
