Red legged Yorkie? Siu Pao? 2 Attachment(s) I am really intrigued by the varieties of Yorkie coats (wiry, woolly, etc) and I just heard about the term red legged Yorkie. I am posting some of my baby's picture here. Could he be a red legged Yorkie? His head fur is soft and as you go down his back towards his tail, its coarser. Can someone please tell me? :) Thank you. |

1 Attachment(s) I'm not sure about your little guy I'm sure someone on here know more about them than me. Here is a picture of a good friends yorkie he is a red legged yorkie. His hair doesn't grow as fast either. |

Is your yorkie's hair slow growing or do you cut it short? If it is slow growing, it is likely a red legged yorkie. |

I have not cut his fur before. He is only 16 weeks old and I am not sure how long a 16 weeks old fur baby should be. |

I can't remember how long the hair was on my two at that age. Does his nose seem a little longer like a Chi? I think that is a characteristic as well. As you can tell by looking at Rudy in the picture I posted. |

His nose is just average I think; not too long, not too short. This pictures shows his nose best. |

3 Attachment(s) This might help...here are my Jo-Jo and Riley at about 16 weeks each...talk about scary! I was concerned about their coats at that age too. I think they have both turned out beautifully now even though they both need a good grooming in this picture. |

I think your pup is adorable. May be to young to tell about his coat they change alot. |

1 Attachment(s) He is a cute boy for sure! I have looked into research, pics and LOTS of info on "red legs". I do not promote the breeding of them for any reason. It's a gamble I am not willing to take when I can pair two yorkies that I know do not carry this "short wiry coat" trait. I happen to own a 9 yr old SPAYED red leg yorkie! She is a wonderful little dog who belongs to my daughter. SPUNKY is not the word for her! She's a real sweety! But would I breed one like her? No. Red legs do not grow coat. I don't care who you are or what you try to convince me otherwise but they do not! Their pups may get "lucky" when paired with a correct coat for mating, but why would you want to risk that? Who would want that throw back in their line? Do we not hold coat as a number one factor in our breed? Yes. Is our goal as breeders to keep the breed looking like it's supposed to and DISTINGUISHABLE from all other breeds? Yes. This is our old red leg girl... she's a spoiled girl and we love her! But we realized early on that she was NOT for breeding. You know I absolutely hate to see these kind of things "promoted" as I had a "respected" breeder tell me once that the dog in THIS picture below was the ONE dog that I SHOULD breed and that my more standard yorkies SHOULD NOT be bred. I cringe every time I think of that but please know I took it with a chuckle and a "yeah yeah" LOL! This is my red leg girl, and her hair has never grown any longer to this day at 9 years old than you see in this pic...She was on our site for years as our "House baby and guard dog" And she is that to this day. |

 This thread is not about breeding red legs Yorkie????? There is no "breeding" word in this thread at all?! I am just trying to ask for opinions on my baby's coat due to my curiosity and the intriguity I have towards the different Yorkie coats! I am just asking about my puppy's coat which is only 16 weeks old as I do not know much about Yorkie's coat. I did not breed my baby and I certainly do not know what coat he is now and I do not understand from your posting, what point are you trying to make???? I am all confused  |

2 Attachment(s) I can't tell if yours is a red leg or not. He may just be a slow grower. He doesn't really have the typical red leg look but his hair does seem short for 16weeks. The hair on the legs of a red leg is usually really short. This is Dylan at 10 wks (notice very short hair on legs) and Dylan at 16 wks. If you think your yorkie looks like him then you probably have a red leg. |

your yorkie is so young - I think you can wait before coming to a conclusion about his coat...I only have reading and my own girls to use as a basis for my opinion - but in my own experience - the girls changed coats all the way to over a year old - especially Cheri....her coat is much slower growing than my oldest who had long hair by 1-1/2....Each yorkie seems to have their own pace of hair growth :) |
