Yorkie Grooming Death I took my Yorkie to the vet to have his hair cut. At some point, he went into respiratory failure and went unconscious. They did CPR on him for 10-15 minutes, but could not revive him. They said that some times yorkies have heart and liver problems, so they did an autopsy on him and said his heart didn't look all the way developed, so they sent it off for more testing. Any ideas what could have caused it? If it is not genetic, what should I do? How should I handle the vet? |
What?? Did they give him something to sedate him? |
that is so tragic. I'm so sorry for your loss. How old was he? I hope they are not charging you for all the tests. |
im so sorry , my heart goes out to you.... i would raise hell.. |
8 months old.. I dont think they are charging me for the test. I didn't ask. Should I try to get the vet to pay me for a replacement? I know he can't be replaced, but I have been thinking I want to get another one. I know he won't compare to mine. He was only 3 lbs. I paid $1500 for him. How much should I be able to reasonably ask the vet? The first 6 months are the worst. For the past 2 months, he has not had accidents in the house and has been a very good dog. He basically runs around the house all day long and can be trusted not to make accidents. |
Oh my , I am so sorry. did they give him something? Hugs to you. |
They gave him a light sedative so they didn't cut him, but they said he was awake and moving around after they finished the cut. He then collapsed and went unconscious. |

Why would he give a sedative just to groom him? If I were you I would make more than a fuss...like Gina said raise hell.. I am sorry to hear this happened..My heart goes out to you... |
OMG...a light seditive???? This gives me even more reason as to why I do not leave my dogs at the groomers. I am so sorry, I can't even begin to image how you feel. This is very very sad. Please use YT for support and all the knowledge you need. :) |
A long time ago, a groomer gave my little Muffin a tranquilizer, without my permission. I could tell when I brought her outside. She was still groggy. Needless to say, I never took her back there again. I'm so sorry about your little yorkie. I know how heartbroken you must be.:( |
i would not let them get away with this.. oh no no no no....never in a million years...... ya see, thats why i groom lexi all by myself and i dont care how she loooks, acutually i dont do such a bad job...... please do something about this right away |
OMG:eek: I am so so sorry for what happened to your poor pup. I don't know what to say about the asking for the replacement. I am sure the vet has some kind of deal that says there not responable for the loss. I hope that they will do some thing for you though.. I will keep you in my prayers.:angel2dl: :angel2dl: :angel2dl: |
grooming death OMG!!!!! Why on earth would they give him a sedative to groom him??? 8Months old..Poor little guy. I WOULD HAVE RAISED MORE THAN HELL !!!! I WOULD HAVE CALLED THE COPS AND I WOULD HAVE THEM SHUT DOWN !!!! There is no excuse for this happening. And as far as them paying you to replace your poor little guy. I would see them in court and call my local news and put it in the paper.. I would see to it that they never groomed another dog again. This is only my opnion.. Please dont trash me about this. |
I am so sorry for your loss. I would ask for a copy of each and every report. Also, when you took him it did they have you sign release forms? Sometimes we just sign without reading what we are signing. You may have signed a form giving them permission to give him a sedative and releasing them from any liability. Again I am really sorry about your loss. But thank you for sharing your story, it is a reminder to all of us that WE need to be really careful in what we do & sign. Just a little thought for your baby. If tears were stairs and memories a lane, I would climb to heaven and bring you home again. |
I was sitting here thinking about this. Ya know what? The vet that administered the tranquilizer or whatever it was they administered should not be the one to do the autopsy to begin with...It should have been done by another office. |

Why did they sedate your dog?? It sounds fishy to me ... maybe they overdosed him. :( |
OMG !!! I wouldn't let them get away with it ! Call the news and the cops. They shouldn't have sedated him. I'm so sorry for your loss. |
I'm sorry about your loss! You definately need to do something about this! I would raise all kinds Heck! |
I am sorry for your heart breaking loss. |
I am so very sorry for your loss. This sounds fishy to me! Perhaps they gave him to much sedation for his size. If he had been vet checked in the past they would have picked up something if his heart was underdeveloped. The reason I say that is when I took Buddy for his very first vet visit there was a lady holding a tiny chi. He was there for his first vet check also. She went before me and came out crying. The vet told her to take him back, he had an underdeveloped heart! I think they are covering up something. Raise holy hell! |
I agree with yorkieusa - OMG.... I would be DEVESTATED if something even remotly like that happened to my girls - omg that poor baby - I would def take this to another vet and find out what happened - that's awful ! |
Ok, let me see if I understand this right.... You took your yorkie to a VET to be groomed? It was the SAME VET that gave the sedation? And yet... the SAME VET that did the autopsy? If that's the case... then yes. Raise hell. I don't know that they will give you money to buy another yorkie, but what they have done is wrong. I would demand that another vet do an autopsy. And if they sent the heart off to be further checked, demand to see the report. Don't just take their word for it. It really sounds like they are trying to cover their hiney. I'm so sorry that this has happened. My heart aches for you. |

I am so sorry for your loss. You got a lot of great advice, I wouldn't drop it. It won't bring him back, but you might save another dog from dying in the hand of that groomer. |
I'm so sorry for your loss. That's awful!!!!! You take your little one for a hair cut and they kill it! unbelievable!!!! |
OMG i am soo sorry, poor Baby ! If they did that to me without asking, they would be paying for another Dog ! |
My heart goes out to you.........I am so sorry for your loss! On a side note, I am so freaked out here. I have noticed my Melody 'drowsy' after coming back from the groomer's.............makes me wonder    |
Did they have your permission to sedate him? |

I am so sorry for your loss. What a terrible tragedy. I agree that something sounds very wrong here. If the tests in his heart come back confirming that it was underdeveloped, you probably have cause within your breeding contract (assuming you have one) that would allow for a replacement or $ as that would be a life-threatening genetic defect within the first year. If, however, the heart tests come back okay - then I do not think it unfair to request the vet/grooming facility cover your loss. There was obviously some kind of reaction to the sedation for whatever reason. I would also request copies of EVERYTHING, from anything you signed when you dropped your baby off for grooming to all the records of what was done before, during and after the grooming. I am just shaking my head as I'm typing this. I can't imagine losing my baby, but to lose a baby in this manner just doesn't make sense. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I hope that you are able to get another baby to help you through your grief. |
