Breeding My Yorkie Pet once only-need help--should I
 

Hi everyone.
I am in a bit of of quandry. I own a yorkie female with my best friend, who got pregnant as soon as she bought the yorkie--so that is how I became her other mother. I have trained her, groomed her, loved her and she is absolutely gorgeous blond and so healthy. MY girlfriend is insisted on breeding her once so she can give me a yorkie puppie. I know everything about caring for yorkies and keeping them healthy and happy, but I have no idea how to breed this dog.
We have a gorgeous male 3lb yorkie that wants to breed with her in December heat. My dog is 15 months old now. What do I do and how can I tell my girlfriend that if we don't know what to do? How can we breed our little girl once. Can you help me I am stumped and if I don't find out I will have nothing to do with the breeding. We can not afford another yorkie as this yorkie costs $2000.oo. Can you help me?

I have no idea where you bought her that you paid that much for a pet. I am sure if you look around you can find a breeder selling pet puppies for pet prices.
So, if you consider breeding her, this is what is going to be something to keep in mind.
Are you able to be home the last week or so before she is due in case she goes into labour early?
Do you know a good Vet clinic open 24/7 in case she needs a C section should something go wrong? Would you recognize if something is not as it should be.
Do you have a spare $1000+ available for an emergency clinic?
Are you prepared to perhaps lose mom and puppies in a worse case scenario?
If she is blonde, her colouring is not correct to breed standard. Should she indeed be bred and why? What about other faults she may have?
If she is registered, do you have breeding rights or was she purchased under spay/neuter contracts?
Do you know anything about genetic problems in Yorkies and what about her pedigree, how much do you know about her parents, grandparents etc?
If you are successful in presenting a litter, can you be home the first week or two making sure they are getting on nursing and thriving.
If there is a weak one or one that is having a problem nursing, would you know what to do to try to save it which could fail anyway? That commitment is you are up every 90 minutes around the clock until that pup can nurse and thrive on its own. After all that I have still lost a pup at 9 days of age which I cried for days after.
It could involve stomach tubing, can you do that?
How much does your vet charge for doing tails and dew claws on puppies as I assume you won't know how to do it yourself at 3-5 days of age.
Do you know what eclampsia is? Which can happen in a bitch and cause death.
Then there is the weaning stage at 3-4 weeks where you have to start feeding them too along with mom nursing them. You have to be around during the process of weaning a litter and make sure they won't go down with hypoglycemia.
Do you know what to do if in the process they get diahrrea problems? Stress of weaning can bring on a whole kettle of problems.
If you look at some of the posts on Yorkietalk, there are getting to be many Yorkies ending up on Petfinder in rescues or rescue Shelters. Don't breed a pet and add to the problems.

Well first of all..do you want another Yorkie??? Breeding just for the sake of wanting to give a good freind a pup is an awful lot to put on a female yorkie IMHO. Yorkies have statistics to back up the fact that whelping problems are a fact and with that, you have the possiblitiy of loosing the bitch, forking out alot of $$$ for vet bills ,possibility of a cesarean section, and loosing pups in the process. If you both go into this educated on these facts, and still desire to breed, there are several books, websites and support here on Yt to help you through this. I would carefully weigh this situaion out and make an educated decision, not an emotional one.:)

You've been given all the things to consider, but you never say how much she weighs. The smaller she is the higher the risk of losing the Mom and more likely an expensive C-section will have to be performed and less puppies to help cover the expenses of having a litter.

Don't breed her--that's my opinion..

Like Lorraine said, there are many, many unexpected costs involved with breeding a dog, especially one as small as a Yorkie and it's very possible that you could lose her in the process. Reputable breeders are lucky if they break even on a litter as all of the expenses really add up.

I have a Maltese/Yorkie X who would have cost me $0, but I gave the rescue a donation as she was an expensive little dog to treat - but she definitely is not "worthless". I adopted her from a rescue I foster for and they get a number of small dogs in...their regular adoption fee is $100 which includes spaying/neutering, all shots, and any other health issues that need to be treated. There are countless dogs being euthanized every single day, including Yorkies...why add to the problem?

By the way, kudos for researching and trying to make a responsible decision :thumbup:.

First of all I want to thank each and everyone of you for replying to my quest in breeding a yorkie once.

I am well educated on everything you guys said, and now that it is in print I can send it to my girlfriend who doesn't believe me when I told her that the only way we can breed Chiquita is with an assisted birth by a vet. Lorraine, the remark about Chiquita not being breed standards, I bought her because she was blonde, I don't care if she doesn't have the standard color and I am not breeding her to sell so I can make back my $2000.00. And if someone were to offer me $10,000.00 I would not ever consider it. I paid $2000.00 because she was everything I wanted in a puppie. Chiquita is my third yorkie. My other two male yorkies were champions from their father Dinner Jack in the 70's. He was a world champion. Everything else I agree totally. I am so grateful that I found this site, you are all wonderful and you helped me help my friend know that we can not just breed her and let her deliver her own puppies. My girlfriend was told by a breeder that she doesn't have to do anything the dog will deliver her own puppies. I have since talked to my friend and we are going to make appointments with the right vet to deliver our little Chiquita's babies. THANKS AGAIN I LOVE THIS SITE.

I Just Wanted to tell you Welcome to YT and good luck with what ever you deside to do. I Have tried the breeding And I do have to tell you it is a lot of stress and worrying over how it will all come out. I did all my research also but guess what..... When the time came. I was totally streesed out and thank good I had the Breeder I used for studd there for me.

You might want to reconsider scheduling a vet to help deliver the pups. I know when Roxi was having her puppies she wanted me right there with her and no one else would do. I had my friend sit with her while I went to the bathroom and Roxi freaked out and barked till I returned. And she sees my friend every day.

I don't understand why she needs to give you a puppy if you have the mother. Is she wanting the mother back even though she will have a very small baby to care for?

Did I miss the reply to the question as to Chiquita's size?

I have to say that I hope that you will decide not to breed her but have her spayed soon. I understand that the longer you wait, the more likely she is to develop mammary tumors. I had never realized that those tumors are as common as they appear to be.

There are so many pets being euthanized, I feel that spaying & neutering our pets is the kind and responsible course of action.

Wowzer $2000 for a pet yorkie?? Even in TO thats pricey...I only paid $550 for Reece in Windsor...he will never walk the ring but hey hes a great lap sitter lol...I would try to find a Yorkie in your wonderful humane society up in TO or put your name on a waiting list for one...just a suggestion. How big is the dog you want to breed btw because if they are too small you could lose that beauiful girl, even though there is a possibity of losing her no matter what weight she is, is your friend willing to risk it??

Again I want to thank everyone for your concern. I contacted Chiquita's breeder and ordered another Yorkie from the same parents and there will be no breeding of Chiquita. And yes I have breeding rights. I don't want to breed any dog, it was my best friend and without my finances she can't breed Chiquita.
So it's over. No breeding for our little 6lb Chiquita ever. I made my decision on the amount of love we have for her. She is to precious to put her thru that.
I will be continuing on dealing with my breeder at the same prices $2000.00.
I can get a pup for $1500.00 but Chiquita's breeder is fabulous. She just had a little of 2 pups at $2000.00 a piece and they were both gone in less than 2 hours. I ordered and put a deposit on her next litter which is Chiquita's parents and we are all happy now. I don't care to hear about I can get a dog cheaper, I got what I paid for and I am more than happy. I LIVE IN TORONTO AND ANYTHING UNDER $1500 IS NOT WORTH LOOKING AT. I ALREADY SAW WHAT'S OUT THERE. SO NO MORE REMARKS ABOUT I CAN GET A DOG CHEAPER.

I am glad you decided not to breed her. $2000 is a good price for a quality yorkie so hopefully no one would say anything about that price:confused: Besides its your business how much you pay for your yorkie and no one elses
