Why do they dock yorkie tails? is it some sort of health reason? |
I forget the reason it was started. I'm too lazy to go look in my yorkie books right now.:D I know it certainly does help with the cleanliness aspect, they're cute like little boxes with that nubby little tail, and just think how many have been saved from having doors slam on them!:D They're cute both ways, but I've never seen one in real life with a full tail. I've seen pictures.:aimeeyork |
My Reece has a full tail that I love love love..docked is cute as heck too..I am not sure of the reason they dock, probably for when yorkies were used as working dogs, and they didnt want their tails to get in the way?? I dont know lol.. Dawn |
My thinking of them doing this is because back when they used yorkies for ratting, docking the tails would make it easier to grab hold of to pull them out. It doesn't make sense because you would think that a longer tail would work better, but I guess a nub could work as a more stable handle. JMO. |
Originally, tails were docked to prevent them from injury. Show breeders do it because AKC insists that it must be done to show your dogs. Other breeders do it because people who buy the pups want the look that the cropping and docking gives them. |
It is true - a lot of working breeds had their tails docked years ago - so that their tails wouldn't impede their work - or become injured when they worked. But - most of these working breeds no longer do the work they used to do and are mainly pets today. So, for this reason, it is felt that docking tails is no longer necessary --- which it isn't.... Sorry I prefer them Docked I've seen an un-docked tail and I'm sorry but it makes them look (conformation wise) better if they are "Docked"......I've seen them as Babies and the look like little rats. IMO a docked tail makes their overall body outline seem more compact, hygiene (thank goodness for "Sanitary shaves") I cannot imagine having to clean them every time after they go to the bathroom with a Baby wipe? No thanks:confused: Besides I'm a "Purist".....I want my Babies to look as close to the AKC. Standard as possible and I happen to love all their characteristic little personality traits that took a few hundred years to Breed?:aimeeyork OK. I looked it up in all of my books, they don't mention a reason other than for "Looks", now I'm curious to see what the answer is now? |
In England its not as common at all, I personally dont get why you'd put an animal through any pain purely for aesthetic reasons ? though I'm guessing its done in a kind a manner as possible, and if through years of breeding we have altered markings and size the fact that the tail remains must show God had a plan !! :) |
Wow....Do Yorkies in America still have their tails docked? My Yorkie has her tail docked but she is 16 years old now and it is very rarely done in the UK now, I havent seen another Yorkie with its tail docked for years. My parents Yorkie and my sisters 3 Yorkies all have tails and they look just fine. Not sure why Yorkies (or any other dogs) have their tails docked, but its not really the done thing now...in the UK anyway! |
In Norway it's even illegal to dock tails! I think they look just as cute with long tails and I just can't see a reason why tails should be docked anyway. |
Yes, we still dock tails in America. I actually had the tails docked and dewclaws removed with our litter this past Saturday. The let out one quick whimper and were sleeping before the vet could finish and put them down. Momma licked the area as soon as I put them back with her and they didn't seem to mind at all. It wasn't nearly as bad as many try to make it out to be. They get more upset and cry more when they are hungry. |
JMO...but when my pups tails were docked they cried and cried (actually screaming was more like it) for about 18 hours afterward.....it was horrible....iin some countries they are banning tail docking...can't wait for America to step up.. |

Docked tail or not it wouldn't matter to me... I love my babies just the way God made them!! :) |
tails Any pups that cry for 18 hrs need to see a vet who knows how to dock tails properly...there is no need for that...clamping is quick and bloodless..no need for stitching and pup is back with mom in seconds..infact I have docked the tail as the puppy nursed on mom and barely disturbed it. |

They are no different than a yorkie with a docked tail when it comes to hygiene. They lift their tails up out of the way...no need for baby wipes. |

Here in Brazil people can choose if they wanna have the tails of their puppies docked or not... but the majority rather docked tails.... My Maggie has had hers docked but I wouldn't mind if it wasn't... she's so precious to me!!! |
i wish that they hadnt docked oscar's tail... the breeder that i got him from relaly didnt listen to anything that i had to say about him. he was free b/c he had a hernia and no one wanted him because of him... but i still wish that she had listened to what i wanted for the puppy. |
tail docking thing Bubba's tail is not docked and at first I was upset that the breeder did'nt now I am glad she did'nt his tail curves up and over so cute and it really is a large part of his personality- as for poopy problems - no problemos - what goes in comes out pretty easy for him alittle too easy and too fast sometime he can't get outside in time - you should see me trying to shove a papertowel under his butt to catch it before it hits the floor- my hubby is just standing by going yuck, yuck yuck .........! sissy bas1 |
I love the undocked tail. It is just as sanitary as a docked tail. If the hair on the tail gets too long, just take the scizzors & shorten the length. In my opinion the tails should not be docked. My Yorkie will be having puppies in a couple weeks & I will not dock the tails. |
I like the look of a docked tail also ----but I know the reason why. It's simply because all the Yorkies I have seen have had docked tails (including the beautiful Yorkies in dog shows) --- so, this simply is my concept or idea of what a Yorkie should look like. If we start seeing more Yorkies with their natural longer tails - we'll soon get used to this and like it just as much. Docking was done in the past - primarily for working dogs and for good reasons - it just isn't necessary any longer - we have just become used to seeing certain breeds with their docked tails - and, it has continued to be done solely for cosmetic reasons (for our own pleasure). I suspect that one day we won't be doing it here in the US either. Carol Jean |

and i would just like to say there are no sanitary issues with full tails at all! the whole docked tail is cleaner is a myth! :) and i know people will say "oh but the breed standard........" but hopefully docking will become banned in all countries soon! :) |
I've never seen an un docked tail so I don't know my opinion? Let me ask this.......will people buy a pup in the US without it docked and still pay the $900.00 and up prices? Is it harder to sell them without their tails docked? |

In the uk its illegal for a breeder to dock tails it can only be done legally by registered vets and not all vets will do it! My Pippa is docked but not correctly it is short but has a extra piece that sits at a right angle on the end!! I personally like the look of a docked tail but if i had puppies i wouldnt do it! I see it as similar to cutting your thumb off when you were born! |
I have seen a few yorkies here in NYC with full tails and I love the way they look!! I think it is becoming a trend around here and I think it is great. Nikko has a docked tail but if I had been given the choice when I purchased him, I would have prefered him natural. I too suspect that eventually America will follow suit in banning the practice and docked tails will be a thing of the past. |
My friend bought a yorkie with an undocked tail and EVREY1 wouldnt beleive it was purebred. in my opinion, since a "yorkie" image in america is how it is, i wouldnt pay as much for a puppy with an undocked tail. |
We just brought our new baby home yesterday and he is undocked. We had been looking at him and his brothers and it wasn't until after we had fallen in love with him that we even realized that his tail wasn't docked. I think he is extra cute with his little tail!:aimeeyork |
