How many pups are too many? I was just curious to find out how many babies everyone has? And how many are too many to own (in your opinion)? Right now I have Gia, I'll be getting her brother next month (Chewy). And I just reserved a baby maltese born last night (female) I probably won't get her until December. |
dont know I had 4 but my sister could not keep her maltese so now I have 5. 2 yorkies 1 chihuahua 1 sharpei and 1 maltese |
As many as your heart can love. Or the hubby says. LOL. I have 2 & would love another. But this last month between surgeries and daily expenses, we've spent over $1000. So I don't see any more in our future for a while. |
Someone once told me about human babies: "most people don't stop having children until they have one too many"! I expect the same applies to dogs. (I am now going to duck and run for cover). |
I'm single and work - (at an office and also at home). I had two dogs - two cats - and two birds. And - really "my plate was full." I especially felt that one of my cats didn't get enough attention from me. I am very fortunate because my neighbors on both sides love all my pets and give them treats and play with them also. In fact, they almost adopted the one cat I mentioned above. It spent a lot of time at their houses being petted and taking naps. So - I would have to say - that there is a limit to the number I can have and spend a lot of individual time with. Unfortunately, I lost both my cats last year - and, really miss them a lot. So - now, I have two birds (no trouble at all) - and two dogs - which both get a lot of attention. I think if you have more people in your family - you can have more pets. Carol Jean |
I have a dog, a cat, a hamster, fish and a baby yorkie on the way :D jaja! However, I don't have human babies yet. We are waiting til I finish school. For me, this is a perfect number and until I buy myself a nice piece of land with a great big house..........we are stopping here for now. ;) |
Ultimate Goal of 6 Yorkies! Right now I have 2 full grown Yorkies, and I just had a Litter of 3.....I've already Sold 1 female and the 1 male puppy and I am keeping my tiny female, of course I kept the Best one for myself! I named her "Tiffany Aloha", since I'm from Hawaii! But I ultimately want to have 6 Yorkies in my pack, or 3 females & 3 males total? I think if you have the energy & means why not? I love the Breed, the more the merrier!:aimeeyork |
I don't think there is a set number of animals that you should own. I believe these are two important factors to consider: 1. Can you afford to take care of them? This is not limited to the initial purchase price -- I'm talking about maintenance. Monthly heartworm pill, flea and tick preventative, annual shots, grooming, etc. not to mention wee wee pads (if you use them), food and treats. Clothes are a luxury but they cost a lot too. Also, what about emergency situations?? What if your dog needed rush emergency surgery tomorrow and it would cost $2,000? If you have too many animals, you may not be able to afford this for each one. 2. Do you have enough time and energy to give them all equal attention? If you can afford financially to own 6 dogs but don't have time for them, then 6 is too much. If you have time for 6 dogs but can't financially afford that many, then 6 is still too much. You have to find a balance with your finances and time and be fair to your dog. I thought about all this (and MUCH more) before I decided to get a third dog. I had to put the dog FIRST before my own selfish longing for another baby. I'm telling you, it's that PUPPY BREATH!! You can't get enough of it!! :p :p |

Well according to my hubby, we already have too many now! :( I would like one more pup...but hubby says forget about it :( BUTTHEAD!!!!! lol. I want sooo bad to get a little Bichon, but so far I haven't had any luck persuading the hubbs. It really sucks!! :( We have 3 dogs, and 1 cat...so 4 babies total. We had a Cocker but she just recently passed away, in January :( I really don't think this is fair either, dang it...because only TWO of the animals are "mine" (Stedman and the Mini Doxie)...and the medium sized dog, which is a mixed breed (we have NO idea what she is, she just showed up at our house and OF COURSE we kept her!) is his, and the cat is "his." The only animals we intentionally "bought" were Pippi (Mini Doxie), and Stedman. The other two just kinda showed up. Well the cat was sorta given to us, we bottle fed it basically from birth before his eyes were even open. We also had his little sister, but she passed away at only a few weeks old. But realistically, they are all BOTH of our animals. And I know we don't need anymore for pete's sake, 4 is PLENTY...but I really want my Bichon :( I'll give it a year or so, it usually takes time to beg him enough before he gives in and just wants me to shut up and get out of his hair :p lol |

I would love lots of dogs -- I can't get enough of them!! :D But realistically, 3 is my limit. I can afford to have many dogs but my time does not permit it. If I had more then 3, I fear they would be neglected ... NOT physically, but emotionally. Hubby and I both work full time. Hubby goes home on his hour lunch break every day to see the babies and play with them (on certain days he even brings them to work with him). Then we devote our evenings to them. With 3 dogs it's ok because I can still hold them individually and kiss them individually and give them PERSONAL time with mommy. I know my limits and it wouldn't be fair for me to get a 4th or 5th dog and not give it my all. |
Good post! I am in the seriously thinking about getting a third dog. I can afford it and I have the time. My hold ups right now are will it be too much for my 9 1/2 year old pom who has just recently started to bond with Cali and I take care of my elderly parents and my Mom, yes I know I am 54 years old, keeps telling me I have my hands full taking care of them and it's too expensive. I don't want to hear about every day from her and believe me I will. I know I will get a third it's just a matter of time. How impossible is it to walk 3 dogs? |
3 --would like a fourth Have 2 goldens and one yorkie.. the golden is not in the best of health, I would love 2 yorkies for companionship at the same size.. |
oops oops lol |

I don't know how many is too many but I feel sure that new little Maltese girl would be just too much for you and you should just send her on down to Texas to me.:) Little Bit and I need a playmate. |
We just have one, but I would love to eventually get another one. Right now, Jake keeps me really busy. I like having just one, as it gives me so much more time to spend with him. Realistically, with working full time and taking care of a house, plus having health problems, one is good for me........for now:D |
I have 2 cats, 2 horses, and 2 yorkies, waiting for a third. I think my limit will be 6, I want to breed, and would like 4 females and 2 males. |
I think the number of pets depends on how much time you have for each. My husband and I both have 6 dogs (2 yorkies, a golden retriever, a pitbull, an English bulldog and a great dane), 2 parrots and a 100-gallon fish tank with about 20 fishes. |
Haha great post!! I have a Boykin Spaniel, a Borkie, a Yorkie a mouse and a bearded dragon...when people come over welcome to the zoo...I want more and more lol..I have a huge house now and lots of room and tons of love. I also am lucky enough to work at home so I also have tons of time on my hands. I guess it all depends on your time and financial situation...if those two things are ok then you are good to go!! Dawn P.S. CONGRATS ON THE NEW BABY MALTESE...IM SO JEALOUS!! |
Alright, you guys are going to think I am crazy...but... I have 5 dogs, 2 yorkies, a maltese, a yorkiepoo, and a cocker spaniel. And I will be getting two female maltese soon. And when we move I will be getting a golden retriever. And I would like to get one or two more maltese and 4 more yorkies, but this is quite a bit in the future. Plus I have 2 cats, a rabbit and 2 chinchillas. So I currently have 10 animals soon to be 12 animals. I love each of my animals and they all get all the attention and care they need. They are all totally spoiled rotten and love it here. There is 3 of us in the house to care for them so that helps. I really don't know my limit, I certaintly have not reached it yet. Some people can only handle so much but for me I grew with lots of animals so this is normal for me and my family. My animals are my life and I could not live without them. I have loved animals since the day I was born and always knew what career I wanted. I am currently studying to be a vet tech and my ultimate goal is to become a veterinarian. So you see, my animals are part of who I am. |
I am blessed with 5 dogs, 4 yorkies and a chow-mix. It's just me and they are my babies. My yorkies are 4 years to 1 year and Lucky my chow-mix is 16 and a half years old. I would love more yorkies, but will wait, because of Lucky's age and the cost that might come up with Lucky being old. Some people think you can't give them all they need, I think all my furbabies get all the love and care they need. Only draw back to having more than one dog is bath day. lol |
borrow some dogs and try it out first- multiple dogs is a very long commitment i have one. i dog sit frequently for my mom who has two yorkies. when i have all three together it is TOO MUCH for me. i feel i can't give them enough attension, it's very difficult to bring them out anywhere, and walking them is hard with three separate leashes. ( they refuse couplers/ won't walk) they interfere with my fiance' and i because he has to sleep on the couch. (they are all used to the bed and cry if they can't sleep with me.) he's scared to roll over them. i love them all. and i take great care of them. it's just very time consuming. maybe i'll get one more as a companion for my single yorkie one day. no more than two for me. |
Well I am afraid I would we horder. Like a compolsive collector on animal planet. I just don't know I could eever settle for a certain amount given I had the money. Scary, I know. |

UPDATE: I ended up deciding on another pup, I just felt more comfortable with the breeder I selected. The other breeder seemed like she was just out to make the $$$$ & really wasn't answering the questions I was asking.Little Bit is welcomed anytime & so are you if you guys ever come to Jersey :D :D Leia is the one on the left |
If you have the money, time and patience for more than one dog, then go for it. I have one. She has the energy level of a toddler. SO I count her as 2 dogs. :) I really can't handle another right now...:D |
right now we have 10 adults and 14 pups; so we have 24 yorkies in all; dogs in every room; but we love them. jerry |
