Is it okay to leave a yorkie in the backyard while I'm at work? Hi, I'm just curious, so please don't start throwing rocks. I haven't bought a yorkie yet, but I'm wondering if it's possible to leave him in the backyard while I'm at work? Is it safe too? Will birds come down and take him or bother him? Where do you leave your dog if you are at work? |
mine stays in his crate when i'm gone. when i get my ex pen he will start staying in that since its bigger and will stay in the crate at nite. no i would definatly not leave him outside....:thumbdown |
I guess though it would depend on how your backyard is set up. I personally would not. Welcome to YT....:welcome4: |
I wouldn't leave mine outside while I was gone. Yorkies can't handle the heat or the cold. IMO I would get an exercise pen and set it up in your house somewhere. |
:) :) 1. Would there be a possibility that someone could take him if you did? I leave mine in the house..He is a mix and bigger than full Yorkies and I dont think I would leave him out. Something just kinda scarey about that to me. Now I have 7 other dogs that I DO leave outside...But not this one...Just my feeling... I applaude you for asking questions before getting your Yorkie. Mine just came to me and I had no intentions of getting another dog..but ...here we go. :) :) |
No it isn't OK Quote:
Yes, it's true that there are hawks, owls, and I don't know what other birds that will pick up yorkies. You also have to worry about other 4-legged animals climbing in and attacking him, not to mention 2-legged animals stealing him. It isn't safe. There are too many temperature extremes as well. Why don't you want a yorkie in the home? |
I wouldn't. There's Heat or Cold - Yorkies don't do well with either - Rain - Hawks - other dogs that can break into your yard with certain fences - kids that love to torture dogs - peple who STEAL dogs - ants...and some plants are poisenous. In my opinion - Yorkies are INSIDE Dogs that love to BE outside - but not left outside. I think he'd be lonely and miserable left outside all day. |
James stays in the bathroom with his bed toys food, water etc... I would be a nervous wreck leaving him outside just b/c there so fragile. |
Ours stay in their crates or locked in the garage when we are not at home (Depends on the weather). I would be a mess, anything could happen back there! |

Very well said....Too many dangers outside to be left alone. |
1 Attachment(s) We used to leave Keeley in the bathroom while we were gone, but he'd get bored and start chewing and scratching and then the bathroom became a mess. He doens't ever chew on floorboard other then when he was in the bathroom alone. So we got him this crate. I got XL and it is like his own little room. He totally has room to move around in there. It fold down and can fit anywhere if we want it out of site. It has been THE BEST PURCHASE we have made in regaurds to him. We leave it open with his bed food and water durring the day and he'll go in there and nap when he doesn't want to be bothered. He hasn't chewed on it at all either. Here is a pic, -- don't mind the sloppy little guy, he had just gotten a mouthful of food out of the crate when I snapped the pic. |
I would never leave my yorkie outside without supervision. Especially since theres so many hawks flying around our neighborhood. |

I never leave my dogs outside for more than 5 minutes. There are many reasons for this: they can dig holes and get out, birds & cats can get them. There are fleas outside and mosquitos and its also really hot outside here in Texas. My mother in law lost her Maltese a few weeks ago becasue it got our of the yard. It is best to get some sort of crate to leave your dog in while you are at work or get a dog pen or section off an area and puppy proof it. |

Buy a Ex-pen or crate, it would be much safer for the baby while your gone. PLEASE do your research before you buy a Yorkie, these small dogs take A LOT of care and time. Best of luck to you! |
Being in california, I know that you have hawks and other large predator birds overhead as well as coyotes on the ground. The combination of these two would make it very dangerous to leave a small dog of any kind outside unsupervised for any length of time. I'm not sure what temp extremes you experience in San Jose, but Yorkies don't tolerate heat or cold well. Cold doesn't have to be extreme - temps in the low 60s can cause shivering quickly, too. Yorkies have only a single coat of fur (unlike any other breed) and that makes them temperature sensitive. Many Yorkies are left at home when mommies and daddies work. Xpens, crates, smaller rooms all work well for their space. If you do get Yorkie, please plan on an inside area for him/her. P.S. Glad you had the courage to ask this question. When you don't know the answer, no question is dumb!! |
