Snow?? I was just wondering if yorkies like snow? And if so, how long is a safe time for them to be out in it? |
This is the 1st winter i'll have my yorkie and I'm curious too! |
Dying to see some answers on this one! We only get snow every 7+ years where I live, so I wouldn't know myself. I live in Mobile, AL. |
Mine love the snow. I let them out 5 to 15 minutes depending on how cold it is. Yorkies have hair rather than fur. |
1 Attachment(s) Half of mine think it's the coolest thing in the world, the other half (the PRISSY ONES) don't want to get their feet wet... LOL A few minutes is fine to let them play in it if they like it, but be prepared to blow them dry when they come in. Here's a pic of one of mine in our BIG SNOW from last year (I think four whole inches, lol) Quote:

My two love the snow. They don't want to come in so I have to put a coat or heavy sweater on them. And like DazzlinYT said, keep that blow dryer handy. |
Georgie doesn't like it or dislike it really he goes out does his business and comes back in. I put a sweater on him most of the time. I wouldn't let them stay for more than a few minutes. Now Eddie and Jack (AlaskaYorkie) seem to love the snow but I don't think they have much of a choice in Alaska;) |
Punkin LOVED the snow last year. She would go crazy running around in it. We would throw her little snow balls and she would jump and catch them in her mouth. We didn't keep her out too long as the snow would melt on her and then freeze up. She always wore a jacket or warm sweater too. |
4 Attachment(s) Lexi and Tori loved the snow last year, this will be Candi's first winter. Here are some pics of my silly girls |

Take it slow with Yorkies in the snow, and they can learn to love it. Stomp down the snow so they don't go in up to their necks, dress them in warm fleece, get them used to wearing booties so their pads aren't touching the snow. If you can keep them moving, they'll stay warm no matter how cold it gets. Then just pay attention to them. If they shiver and stop moving, it's time to quit or put them in your coat for a while. I have a 4 pounder who can walk for about 5 minutes at a time. My 9 pounder can go 30 minutes. So in a 30-minute walk, I'll let the 4-pounder out about 3 times for 5 minutes each time. That's not a bad walk. Most important: Take pictures and vids! |
