Snow?? I was just wondering if yorkies like snow? And if so, how long is a safe time for them to be out in it? |
This is the 1st winter i'll have my yorkie and I'm curious too! |
Dying to see some answers on this one! We only get snow every 7+ years where I live, so I wouldn't know myself. I live in Mobile, AL. |
Mine love the snow. I let them out 5 to 15 minutes depending on how cold it is. Yorkies have hair rather than fur. |
1 Attachment(s) Half of mine think it's the coolest thing in the world, the other half (the PRISSY ONES) don't want to get their feet wet... LOL A few minutes is fine to let them play in it if they like it, but be prepared to blow them dry when they come in. Here's a pic of one of mine in our BIG SNOW from last year (I think four whole inches, lol) Quote:

My two love the snow. They don't want to come in so I have to put a coat or heavy sweater on them. And like DazzlinYT said, keep that blow dryer handy. |
Georgie doesn't like it or dislike it really he goes out does his business and comes back in. I put a sweater on him most of the time. I wouldn't let them stay for more than a few minutes. Now Eddie and Jack (AlaskaYorkie) seem to love the snow but I don't think they have much of a choice in Alaska;) |
Punkin LOVED the snow last year. She would go crazy running around in it. We would throw her little snow balls and she would jump and catch them in her mouth. We didn't keep her out too long as the snow would melt on her and then freeze up. She always wore a jacket or warm sweater too. |
4 Attachment(s) Lexi and Tori loved the snow last year, this will be Candi's first winter. Here are some pics of my silly girls |

Take it slow with Yorkies in the snow, and they can learn to love it. Stomp down the snow so they don't go in up to their necks, dress them in warm fleece, get them used to wearing booties so their pads aren't touching the snow. If you can keep them moving, they'll stay warm no matter how cold it gets. Then just pay attention to them. If they shiver and stop moving, it's time to quit or put them in your coat for a while. I have a 4 pounder who can walk for about 5 minutes at a time. My 9 pounder can go 30 minutes. So in a 30-minute walk, I'll let the 4-pounder out about 3 times for 5 minutes each time. That's not a bad walk. Most important: Take pictures and vids! |
Gus didn't care too much for snow the first time we took him but it was fresh powder. I think it freaked him out. But he did love playing on the packed ice with little powder. http://www.dropshots.com/day.php?use...3&ctime=232424 |
1 Attachment(s) Muffin used to just love the snow and she'd run through the snow drifts and come in with snow all over her. She just didn't stay out very long. She'd get cold. One clue that they're getting cold is when you see them standing there on three legs and not moving!;) This is a picture of Kacee last year in a little snow. It was her first winter. We didn't have much snow at all last year, so she still doesn't really know what fun it can be. You can tell in the picture that she didn't quite know what to think of it.:D |
The only time Buddy is out in it is to be walked. He loved his coat and rolling around in the snow.:) He didn't mind getting wet but he hates the rain! |
All these snow pics are great! I'm afraid it will be a rare occasion when Ferdi sees snow. |
ooooooh i cant wait for the snow |
I let Tiger play a little bit on the snow and I think he likes it . . however, there isn't much on the ground when I finally let him play as he was still so young then. This winter will be different as he will be over a year old and Annika will be almost a year too so both will be able to handle it being that they are a bit older    I hate driving in the snow though so I will still continue to wish we won't get very many this coming winter season :p |
the snow can be fun for all... I am wondering also if my girls will lke the snow the love the tall grass and hop like bunnies . so i wonder if they will hop in the snow but i am more worried about my xmas tree this year EEK!!! |
We had snow in our yard for most of the winter up to our knees or higher. We live in a smallish mountain town. It was a little hard for my yorkie to manuver sometimes so we shoveled trails for her to go into the yard. It is really cute to see the fresh snow falling on their hair, so long as they don't get too wet and cold. My new yorkie is from Washington state and hasn't seen the weather we get yet. This will be her first winter, we'll see if she is made of as tuff of stuff! |
romeo barks at snow flakes. lol.. he doesn't really like the cold or snow.:( maybe i need to get him a little condo in miami. lol.:p |
Jaxon liked the snow last year but we tried not to keep him out too long. When it was really cold he still wanted to go for walks but would hold up his front paws one at a time so I think he'll need booties this year. Sweaters or warm coats really help to keep them toasty! |
