Im getting ready to purchase my yorkie and i have a question the breeder told me that shes getting better at eating..shes almost 3 months old but sometimes she doesnt and she does crash due to the hypoglycemia.. she only weighs 1lb 2oz but for the past 2 months I have gone to see her almost everyday I have fallen in love with this beautiful little girl but Im worried about the hypoglycemia, my boyfriend works 12 hour days and I would during the week only be able to get to her probably every 3-4 hours would she be safe and would she always have hypoglycemia and could that turn into diabetes, I'm just torn between it and I dont know what to do. Everytime Ive seen her she always has tons of energy. hes just the cutest little furball! If I am to get her what would you guys recomend:confused: omend? |
you could give her nutrical everyday when you leave but i am wondering if there isnt something else wrong with her that she has hypoglycemia so often |
thats what I thought, because the breeder said in the begining it was worse but now shes gotten alot better, she just doesn't eat sometimes and thats what worries me if Im gone for a few hours and something happens to her. I want her so badly but Im so scared of something happening I would be a mess how often would you give them the nurtical? |
Three times a day a fingertip amount. I understand your fears I was going to adopt a girl that had hypoglycemic attacks but i am home all day She died while i was waiting on her. I dont know if something else was wrong with her too though |
Is there anyway to tell about the hypoglycemic attacks that maybe something else is wrong without going to the vet yet or no, or could it also be from a possibility that she wasnt eating? thats what the she said but I dont understand if she doesnt want to eat then shouldnt there be other problems or do small puppies do that? |

I would never leave this pup on its own for longer than maybe an hour or two at best. I would not sell this pup to anyone. I would never recommend purchasing this pup. If this were one of mine, I would be keeping it to at minimum a year of age, if it still was on this earth. By then, it would be showing me if there was anything further wrong with it or it would have gotten over whatever was going on. Yorkies were not meant to be this size. Some are and are healthy but there is the greater risk that it is not. It could end up being a tragedy for you, or a series of very high Vet bills and that is assuming you have a Vet that knows what they are doing. Not all Vets have a clue about Toy dogs much less one this undersized. |

I am so sorry. You are aware that you are taking a risk here. You never know when the condition may decline etc. You mentioned you are in love with this pup, so I am assuming you are ready to provide everything necessary (medical needs). I don't think it's our place to tell you to get her or not, but rather leave it up to you and send you our prayers. Good luck and best wishes to both of you. |
would that consist of hypoglycemia because she doesnt eat or is there a reason she doenst eat, honestly I just want to know everything about there health right now and what I should suspect, my boyfriend doesnt think I should get her but wait to find another one. |
I would asks for tests to be done before I purchased that pup. Specifically for livershunt (bile acid). I had a tiny one that had liver shunt, never got over 1 1/2 pounds and passed away at 4 months. This was my first experience with Liver Shunt and hopefully my last. I let the breeder know that I purchased her from (it was her first). She is in my avatar. When she died she could crawl underneath the bathroom door still. Those with bad livershunts stay very small. Do a search and you can find lots of info. I'm sure that isn't the case, but you should be aware. I hate to see you get into a bad situation and get attached to a sick puppy. Good Luck, Susan |
First of all, a huge congratulations to you on becoming a new Yorkie Mom. I would be very concerned about bringing home a yorkie that was crashing at 3 months of age. Please, please have a vet thoroughly check out this little one, and be sure to do a complete blood panel. Small size, hypoglocemic episodes and poor eating habits are all symptoms. Good luck and remember, we are here for you. |
Can you have your own vet take a look at her?? Usually in the breeder's contract it states that you have a few days to take the puppy to your vet and have her checked out. I hope everything works out for you. |
Theres no way without a vet testing her doing bloodwork and a bile acid test to know if she has something besides just hypoglycemia. If you get that up without the tests you are taking a gamble |
I thinkI might just have to start looking again because I dont think I could handle having a puppy with that many problems...heck Im already scared about getting her spayed and I dont even have her yet :( And her brother that is there is pretty much half the size of her I think she is maybe the runt but would that even matter? |
It just depends many breeders have healthy runts. She does not sound healthy though. My girl that died was the runt also. |
Ive only been on this site for maybe 2 or 3 weeks but Im so scared of getting an unhealthy puppy and I have researed this breed sooo much thank you guys for all of your help I appreciate so much you guys are awesome here!:p |

It may not be our place to tell Vanessa whether or not to buy it, but it is certainly our responsibilty to provide the information to base that decision on. Testing at this age can be misleading. After a pup is born, the mothers system is no longer sustaining its life. It is now up to the pup to do that with its own system. Sometimes it takes many months even a year or more for decline. Sometimes decline is quick. Testing on a very young pup, may show minimal results but a totally different story 6 months or a year later. It just took that long for the condition to become measurable. |
PERSONALLY, I would not buy a sick puppy..but thats me. Good luck! |
I don't have any answers for you. All I can really say, is Venus is 3 months, and when we went to the vet over a week ago, she was at 2 pounds. I don't know what the normal weight is for a yorkie that age, but my vet was pleased with 2 lbs, she's grown since her last visit. When I first got her, I gave her neutra-cal regular, those first 5 days, since she seemed to be having separation anxiety from her mom. She's all over that now. I can't say whether or not to get that pup, thats your decision. Just letting you know about mine, and her weight. I wish you luck in finding the dog of your dreams. |
Lily Quote:
Hun, as much as I loved my Lily,a pup with that kinda of trouble can cost you literially thousands of dollars. I got Lily from ingorant and careless person who won't neuter her dogs. She says " theres always homes for free small mutts." and when I told her how ,uch I paid put to keep Lily as long as I did. She told me first sezuire I should have put her down. none of the others had that trouble. I had to get away from her I almost lost it. if I was to get a purebred dog {yorkie} I'd want proof the parents have been to the vet and had all the proper checks and vacs. and a health gurantee. I'm sorry but a baby already having troubles staying stable. No I'd pass. period. Having lived thru having Lily for such a short time. I'd pass. there's something the breeder's not telling you. or is too cheap or stupid to find out what's wrong with this baby. |
sounds like this pup needs alot of time and care. |

When I got Cali at 9 weeks old last year she had 3 hypoglycemic attacks that required ER vet visits. That cost over 2,000. total. She was tested for Liver shunt and had higher than normal levels so this resulted in more test and when she was spayed at 8 months another 2800.00. In Cali's first year with me vet bills have totaled over 6000.00. She was the runt of the litter and 1 lb at 10 weeks, she has since grown to almost 5 lbs. I am not working so it was much easier to keep an eye on her and I always took her in at the least sign of illness. I had to feed her every 3 hours for months and she was a picky eater so I had to sit and make sure she ate. Cali did have a very mild internal liver shunt but they don't believe that was causing the episodes. SHe did grow out of them but not until she was over 6 months old. At the very least, ask for a Bile acid test and blood work. I know personally I will not take a puppy that is not Bile Acid tested ever again. There is a lot of worry and heartache when these babies go down fast, not to mention the financial. I really feel bad you have a tought decision to make and just wanted to share my experiences. I love Cali to pieces so it was worth it, but fortunatley Cali grew out of her problems and I was able to comeup with t he vet fees. Good luck let us know what you decide. |

She didn't have hypoglycemia, she was just filled with parasites. She is now 6 months & weight over 6 lbs. I was told she wouldn't weigh over 4. So I just wonder what else. We still love her, but it is not what we expected. |
I would not buy a sick puppy , if your heart is really set on purchasing this one than wait it out. If she is not eating and having attacks at the breeders the stress and anxiety she will feel when she arrives in your home will bring on another one. My nyx was 1lb 5oz at 14 weeks, when she came home she was in a new environment and didn't want to eat she was pretty much on Nutrical, but I was home watching her like a hawk to make sure she was ok. She never showed any signs of illness but that did not stop me from worrying due to her size and age. |
Before you even consider purchasing a pup so small, you need to read Brittie's site and all of it: http://www.mylittlemia.com/ |
If you will be only 3 or 4 hours with the puppy , why don't you buy a stuff dog? This way the puppy will be healthy and won't miss the presence of humans . |

I would onlybe away from her durring the week while working for 3-4 hours at most but I think with all of the information I have received ( thank you everyone who posted I appreciateit greatly!) I am going to wait to get a puppy that is healthy,i just hope this one ends up ok. It just breaks my heart to know that she might not be:thumbdown |
