my yorkie has pancreatitis...anyone been through this?
 

Good morning fellow yorkie owners. I found out on Friday that my little baby Bruiser has pancreatitis. He was very ill on Thursday, when I came home from work he had vomitted in 9 different spots. I ran him to the vet and they took blood. The blood work came back on Friday and the vet told me to get him in there right away for treatment because he had pancreatitis and that could be fatal.
He is supposed to have 3-5 days of fasting and treatment and since it is the holiday and the vet office is closed, my vet was nice enough to take my baby home with him.
The vet called this morning and said Bruiser is taking his treatment this morning and doing ok. They will continue his treatment and then take his blood on Tuesday and see if he is better...

I am scared to death. Bruiser is only 3 years old.
Has anyone else been through this and be willing to share their story with me?

Yes, my mother’s Yorkie had it 3 years ago, she was so very sick but we were able to take her home after they gave her a couple of shots and re-hydrated her. She fasted for a day, then ate boiled chicken and rice for a couple of days.

Lilly had eaten something that caused this, though no one was quite sure exactly what. My mom was very ill at the time and I would many times leave my meal on the table only to find that she had taken off with it, like once I had to wrestle my filet mignon away from her…. She ran under the bed and it was a tug of war! Anyway you have to be very careful what you feed them, no human food! What is good for us could kill them. I know many here do, but it is taking a real chance.

Also my ex-husband just lost his dog, a springer spaniel because he got into a friends garbage where there was trimming from all the steaks that had been cooked that weekend.

So I would caution everyone to be very careful what you feed your dogs. I hope your baby Brusier will be OK though things sound pretty good from what you have said. I know you are worried, that can’t be helped, I myself would be crazy by this time. So all I can say is that I will ad Brusier to my prayers that he gets well soon.

You are right, no people food every again! We do usually give Bruiser table scraps. I knew it was not great for him to have them but didn't realize it could cause something like this, I feel very guilty about it.

How was your mothers dog after treatment? Did she live a nice long life?

I'm so sorry about your little one. You'll probably learn whether or not it is acute or chronic. They usually go on to live normal lives when fed the proper diet and given their medication regularly as well as exercised properly. You can read this, too:

Rich, fatty foods can be very dangerous to dogs susceptible to attacks of pancreatitis. Often you may not know that your dog is susceptible until he is very sick with his first attack. It is often the smaller, more energetic breeds like miniature or toy poodles, cocker spaniels, miniature schauzers, and other small terrier-type dogs who seem particularly prone. However, any dog may have a problem. It is best to avoid these foods altogether.

Signs of pancreatitis generally include an acute onset of vomiting (sometimes with diarrhea) and abdominal pain, which may be evidenced as a hunched posture or "splinting" of the abdomen when picked up. The dog may become very sick quickly and often needs intensive fluid and antibiotic therapy.

I am sure he will be just fine, but no more people food of any kind. Even one cheesenip can cause an attack.

Hope he's feeling better. I had one dog that had it once and was fine after treatment and no people food. Ham seemed to be the culprit.

If you can get them through it, there is no lasting effects that I know of. Lilly was just fine after the fast and bland diet, which I continued for the rest of the week. She was 12 then, and 15 now. May God bless her!

Yes, I have been thru pancreatitis several times with my male yorkie. We have learned no human treats. It costs to much not only in dollars but in emotions. I never want to see Sammy go thru being so sick againl. I try to be careful, the vet put him on Hills dog food. He did really well.

Gizmo has had two bouts with Pancreatitis and later with HGE. After being put on strictly i/d he has enjoyed months of no problems. After the first attack we went thru the bland diet thing and after introducing food for sensitive tummies we were right back in trouble. So it looks like i/d from here on out. I do boil the occasional chicken and debone it, putting it in small freezer bags for him. These are his treats. At his last blood levels he was a healthy little boy. Good luck with your baby, best thing to do is read all you can on the subject.:)
