my yorkie has pancreatitis...anyone been through this? Good morning fellow yorkie owners. I found out on Friday that my little baby Bruiser has pancreatitis. He was very ill on Thursday, when I came home from work he had vomitted in 9 different spots. I ran him to the vet and they took blood. The blood work came back on Friday and the vet told me to get him in there right away for treatment because he had pancreatitis and that could be fatal. He is supposed to have 3-5 days of fasting and treatment and since it is the holiday and the vet office is closed, my vet was nice enough to take my baby home with him. The vet called this morning and said Bruiser is taking his treatment this morning and doing ok. They will continue his treatment and then take his blood on Tuesday and see if he is better... I am scared to death. Bruiser is only 3 years old. Has anyone else been through this and be willing to share their story with me? Thanks! Cortney |

Lilly had eaten something that caused this, though no one was quite sure exactly what. My mom was very ill at the time and I would many times leave my meal on the table only to find that she had taken off with it, like once I had to wrestle my filet mignon away from her…. She ran under the bed and it was a tug of war! Anyway you have to be very careful what you feed them, no human food! What is good for us could kill them. I know many here do, but it is taking a real chance. Also my ex-husband just lost his dog, a springer spaniel because he got into a friends garbage where there was trimming from all the steaks that had been cooked that weekend. So I would caution everyone to be very careful what you feed your dogs. I hope your baby Brusier will be OK though things sound pretty good from what you have said. I know you are worried, that can’t be helped, I myself would be crazy by this time. So all I can say is that I will ad Brusier to my prayers that he gets well soon. |
thanks for sharing your experience. You are right, no people food every again! We do usually give Bruiser table scraps. I knew it was not great for him to have them but didn't realize it could cause something like this, I feel very guilty about it. How was your mothers dog after treatment? Did she live a nice long life? |
I'm so sorry about your little one. You'll probably learn whether or not it is acute or chronic. They usually go on to live normal lives when fed the proper diet and given their medication regularly as well as exercised properly. You can read this, too: Rich, fatty foods can be very dangerous to dogs susceptible to attacks of pancreatitis. Often you may not know that your dog is susceptible until he is very sick with his first attack. It is often the smaller, more energetic breeds like miniature or toy poodles, cocker spaniels, miniature schauzers, and other small terrier-type dogs who seem particularly prone. However, any dog may have a problem. It is best to avoid these foods altogether. turkey skin bacon, sausages, hot dogs fruit cake, plum pudding deep-fried Signs of pancreatitis generally include an acute onset of vomiting (sometimes with diarrhea) and abdominal pain, which may be evidenced as a hunched posture or "splinting" of the abdomen when picked up. The dog may become very sick quickly and often needs intensive fluid and antibiotic therapy. http://mooreshaven.com/pets/dogs/saf...foodslist.html Here is another link on care: http://www.mscc.ca/pancreatitis.html |
I am sure he will be just fine, but no more people food of any kind. Even one cheesenip can cause an attack. |
Hope he's feeling better. I had one dog that had it once and was fine after treatment and no people food. Ham seemed to be the culprit. |
I am so sorry to learn this...........I will be praying for your little one! |

How Is Your Baby??????????? Please let us know! |
Yes, I have been thru pancreatitis several times with my male yorkie. We have learned no human treats. It costs to much not only in dollars but in emotions. I never want to see Sammy go thru being so sick againl. I try to be careful, the vet put him on Hills dog food. He did really well. |
Gizmo has had two bouts with Pancreatitis and later with HGE. After being put on strictly i/d he has enjoyed months of no problems. After the first attack we went thru the bland diet thing and after introducing food for sensitive tummies we were right back in trouble. So it looks like i/d from here on out. I do boil the occasional chicken and debone it, putting it in small freezer bags for him. These are his treats. At his last blood levels he was a healthy little boy. Good luck with your baby, best thing to do is read all you can on the subject.:) |
How is the baby doing? Hope everything is alright? |
thanks for all the concern and info!! Bruiser stayed with the vet over the long weekend for treatment. This morning the vet took him to work with him and is going to take his blood to check his levels. If they have gone down then I will get to pick him up today and start his new lifelong diet. The vet said Bruiser did well over the weekend and started to pep up. He also said his entire family has fallen in love with him and they hate to return him, that's my big boy, always making friends even when he feels badly! I am going to call the vet at 10:30 and see if the results are back yet... I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all the prayers!! |
Any updates????? Hope Bruiser is feeling better. |
So, how is he? I found this and wanted to share it with you. May of 1998 brought the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a very painful condition and not always easily diagnosable. The pancreas become inflamed, then do not function normally which adversely affects the digestive process. Treatment usually involves withholding food and water until the crisis passes followed by bland diet. A word of warning, if left untreated, pancreatitis can be fatal. Sparky's diet was changed to that of no, or very low fat, restricted protein - specifically boiled chicken in small quantities, egg, rice or pasta and small quantities of broccoli due to the pancreatitis and tendency to form bladder stones (calcium oxalate). I added Prozyme (digestive enzymes) to help him pre-digest his food, allowing his digestive system perform better, Vitamin B50 Complex, Calcium/Magnesium, and Vitamin D, very small amount to help bind with oxelates in the gut and keep them from reaching his kidneys) as well as other supplements. I had also added Milkthistle - reported to help the liver function more efficiently. If you decide to add Milksthistle, then make sure you don't have the additives such as artichoke (it acts as a diuretic). See the link for Sparky's Diet at the bottom of this page. http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Zoo/3190/ Sparky's Diet: http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Zoo/3190/diet/ |
I lost my beautiful terrier mix Nighean to pancreatitis in January. It was her third bout with it and she was in such horrific pain this third and last time. Her pancreas was just a mess and sadly we had to put her to sleep. It can be a very devastating disease, and very painful for the dog, but hopefully if treated quickly and properly by the vet, it can be overcome. I hope everything works out well for your little one. Not all pancreatitis stories have sad endings. We'll keep saying prayers that all works out well for your Bruiser. |
Bruiser update! Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your posts! I had never heard of pancreatitis before Bruiser got it so all of your posts have been so helpful! I brought Bruiser home yesterday afternoon. He is finished with his fasting and I am starting his new low fat bland diet. He kept his food down last night and I fed him a very small amount this morning before I left for work. I'll check on him at lunch, I hated even leaving him today. He was so peppy last night and wanted to play, it was nice to see the old Bruiser. He went poo poo this morning too, that was such a relief that it was normal. His blood test was still high, levels are supposed to be 200-1800 and his is 3000, but started at 5500. So he goes back in Saturday for another blood test. Please say alittle prayer for him. Thanks again for all of your replies and support. My sympathy goes out to all those who lost their yorkie to this condition. You are so brave to go on and tell people about pancreatitis and how important it is to not feed them table scraps of any kind!!! |

I would imagine that it will take some time for the levels to drop. I am glad he's doing so well and hope you continue to update us.:) |
