so workingin a vets office isnt always sugar!! :( so I had a good day today except a couple things. 1. we put an older dog down tonight. It was very very hard for me. I wrapped her in a blanket and loved on her before the doctor PTS. the clients werent there, so I felt like the last human touch she would remember was love, maybe thats just me 2. had a litter of 6 week old kittens come in 3 of them. very very sick. should be eating but wouldnt. so right away 1 died. after treatments i thought they were going to make it, but then the 2 one died. I bottle fed the last, warmed it up and all that and I just have a feeling when I get there in the morning it wont be. these kittens are almost at the age where they should be given away and its soo sad. sooo sorry just had to tell someone. !! ( that understands)) |
That would be such a tough job! But someone great, like you, has to do it. |
I could never work in a vets office & respect those who do a lot. |
How sad. But it sounds like you are a very caring person and will comfort all the sick babies that come through the door. |
awwwwwwww that's so sad, and I'm sorry you had a bad day. When my kids were younger, we had a cat that got very sick with a kidney problem. It was a stray that we took in and had for several years. We spent tons of money keeping him healthy, but he eventually got too sick. The vet recommended putting him to sleep. My kids were young and were heartbroken. The vet let the kids come in and spend some time with the cat and say goodbye, which I thought was really nice. It was so sad. :( |

they do this where i work too, but some owners its just too hard to say goodbye and I understand plus some people wanna remember their pet alive and happy not dying!! i have to respect that, but I dont think the pet should just die alone either. I will try my best to comfort them, thats the least I can do!! |

That's gotta be tough. I'm another one that could never work in a vet's office. I don't know how people do it. I guess some of us are such softies. I'm afraid I'd be crying most of the time.:( I think it takes a special person and I'm confident that the little animals whose lives are ended there are lucky to have you caring for them in their last moments. |

thank you. I just started this job but I vowed to myself this before I started. Its kinda my way of dealing. I mean I cant save them all and some really do need to go to rainbow bridge. I mean really some cant walk, see , eat and its time. No since them suffering. Dont get me wrong, there are a LOT of pluses too. I mean its awesome to see an animal come in and be at deaths door and leave tail waggin slobberin jumpin around thats awesome !! |
When Kacee was just a couple of pounds, we were sitting in the waiting room at the vet's. All of a sudden there was all of this howling and barking and carrying on. I had to take her outside for awhile because I could see she was beginning to get really nervous and I didn't want her to be scared to go to the vet's. Turns out it was this big lug of a dog just being a big baby because she was taking a bandage off his leg!:D She said he always carries on like that.:D :D :D |
I always admire those who care for others. That must be a very rewarding job!!! :D |
I can only imagine how hard it would be to work at a vet's office. I give you respect for doing so. |
Ohhhh, reminds me of my days working at the vet office myself- total of 5 years. I loved it and miss it still. It was hard work. You get a little dirty, have to see some sad things, but overall I knew we were helping so many animals. My vet was even written up in the vet journal for saving this doberman's life. The dog ate a pair of pantyhose - I had to wash it off after it was in its stomach - groce and take pictures of it for his article. But cool how we saved the dog's life. He would have died soon if we had not operated. My jobs - Lets see ... I took xrays, gave shots, counted white blood cells (can't be disturbed while doing this), operated the gas and oxygen during operations, sometimes cut stitches for the vet when he was stiching up during operation, tapped dobe's ears, cleaned kennels, answered phones and did some reception work. Of forgot, groomed dogs and cats. yep! did it all! Hint - don't put anything you want to eat in the freezer - just don't. |
I know things like that can't be easy for you, but I am thankful for people like you working at the vet's clinic. Some people are just there for the pay, but you take these little ones into your heart and give them special attention and love that they are needing for whatever reason they are there. Bless your heart!!! |

It takes special people to do those jobs, i have great respect for people like you! At least that baby did not have to go alone, you were there to comfort him! Bless your heart! |
Dear Newmommy, It is wonderful to know there is such caring people as yourself. You are so appreciated. How so many times I wish for our Cassie that she could have left us in an easier way, that was one of the worst longest nights of my life, I can only pray that she was not aware of anything but that I was there and that she felt my love for her. Oh wow, it is so hard to give one up I have really had a difficult time getting over our loss. Thank you for being in this profession that you have chosen, I know how difficult it is for you and others, but thank you for being in the profession you are in and sending you ((((((((((Newmommy))))))))))))))'s Patti and Jack |
I think working in a vets office would be hard because of the deaths you see. I think it would also be great though seeing sick animals get healthy |

I would really love to work in a vets office. But after how badly I cried and carried on when my husbands cocker Lady, was gently put to sleep - I doubt I can control my emotions. I was trying really hard to be strong for her but when her eyes closed ...I lost it. I literally sat on the floor and couldn't stop crying ....for hours....they had to walk me out.....even the vet called me the next day to see if I was ok. Lady and I were best friends. She was a special girl. |

the best thing you can do is love on everything that comes in there, and try to comfort them all, not matter what it is, how it looks, or what's being done to it. i found that my job was more for making the animal happy then assisting the vet. because if the animal was happy, it made the vet's job easier. |
I completely understand what you are feeling . Yesterday , I helped for a C-Section on a Bulldog . She had 6 pups , 2 were very difformed so the owner asked us to put them down . Sincerly , I prefer when I can help to save a life but sometimes we can't save them all . |
Thank you newmommy for what you do. It takes a special person to do that....you are amazing. I am so thankful that you were there with that dog in it's final moments here on earth. It made me cry to read that. We just had to put our beloved Dexter to sleep July 10th and I can't imagine not being there with him. Thanks for the good you do -- the animals at your vet are blessed to have such a caring person there. |
First of all, it takes a very special person to do what you did and bless you for thinking the way you did with that dog - the last touch being one of love! The vet's office you work for knew what they were doing when they hired you - a caring, compassionate person! Please let us know about the other kitten. |
vet My old vet told me that one of the hardest parts of his job was when a pet was brought in to be put down AND it was young and healthy..the reasons were never justified. He would refuse, they would get mad and say they would find a vet who would. He talked one woman into giving him a silver poodle for his mother..the reason the woman wanted it put down is, she was moving to a condo with no pets and NO one would love and care for her dog like she ddi..strange kind o love??? She agreed my vet's mother would since she raised a vet!! LOL I never minded working with animals..it is some of the people I could not stand. |
Thats awful I dnt understand why someone would put a perfectly healthy dog to sleep. I could understand if the dog was big and atacked someone but that would be the only good reason to me |
yeah but they do. thats what I was told before I even started that sometimes it kills you not to say anything to the owner but its not our place, the vets maybe, but not ours. The least we can do is comfort them. I have a feeling Im in trouble the first time a young one comes to pts. I hope they dont want him back and then I can just take him home and the owner will never know!!! Your welcome everyone, but I really dont do it for praise, I LOVE animals and I do it for them. I wouldnt want to die alone and Im sure they dont either. I will update on the kitten when I get home at 8pm tonight. I hope he is still there!!! have a great day everyone, Im off |
That has to be tough. But I bet it can be very rewarding also. There have to be more successes than losses. |
You are truly a wonderful, caring, and special person to do the work you do. Not everyone is cut out for such a difficult and often times, emotionally draining job. Hats off to you for taking care of animals in need and loving them when they most need it.:good job: |
Oh my, so sorry. That is a job I could not do, so thank you for being able to do it as someone has too. |
