I'm constantly seeing all these expensive items pumped up here on Yorkietalk, so I thought I would just voice my opinions on what I like to use and believeIN MY OPINION.... to be better then the hyped up expensive products.

First and Foremost... my all time favorite.... Aussie 3 Minute miracle DEEEEP conditioner. NEVER EVER found anything better and it's under $4 in most places. Follow direction on package and leave it ON for those 3 minutes.

Tried about EVERY dogfood on the planet from medium to VERY expensive. I find Blue Buffalo is the best when it comes to ...well er... POOPING. Always firm and dark with no tummy troubles. plus I found way less STINK than foods like Merrick . which leaves the smelliest poo's I ever smelled in my LIFE.

Best thing for flaking dry skin... Olive or vegetable oil. Tried all the expensive crud and nothing showed improvement quite like the regular oil. It's cheap and works great plus the added bonus that the dogs LOVE IT. Oh yeah. It also tends to make any dog I get in here grow a softer coat.


Tick removel. Forget the drs. and expensive gadgets. Scooping it awy with a fork is the simplest most easy way I have found.

Topknots. If you have to have a band those Mini bands with the cloth coverings are tops. if you want easier .... Im loving those Goody childrens plastic baby barrettes with lots of tight gripping teeth. Way easier then bands or clips.

Best place to get heartworm and stuff like that. Equine Megastore or a close second is Petshed. It depends on exactly what I want. Yes they are from Australia , but no prescription needed and I have NEVER been disappointed. Everything is always very well dated with LOTS of time before expiration and I received the most WONDERFUL customer service the one time I did have to call Equine Megastore. Shipping time is basically the same as if I order right here in the states and shipping is always very reasonable. Actually if you get on the mailing list from Equine, they send you emails with free shipping or very cheap shipping codes.

Best thing to brush your dog with... well I don't brush.... I comb. I found the rubber handled, upper end, steel fine tooth flea combs are awesome. Usually around $5 and great for all coats and leaves a slick shiney finish. The small steel ,rounded, flea combs are GREAT for getting eye gunk out.

:bravo: :bravo: Well said. I think sometimes we Yorkie owners get caught up in the hype of buying "the best for our best". We've all been guilty of that. I think that as long as we do our best for our babies, they don't care if they're getting groomed with 5-star product or a generic brand that works exactly the same.

I'm not ashamed to say that Adrianna doesn't have a kong toy.....she has a basket filled of toys from the dollar store that she adores!! :p

I've heard Aussie 3 minute miracle works !! I'm planning to pick some up today - and heck - if I don't like it on the girls - I'll use it - I NEED a miracle for my hair :)

LOL.. Geez V. How do you think I found it for the yorkies...I used it for my hair first and it worked so well at conditioning I tried it on the dogs:p

Whoops I forgot to mention one of my other great tips:rolleyes:

I found if I Comb out the hair first, then wash, then condition...THEN...AIR DRY...YES AIR DRY no blow drying.....then comb it out when completely dry...it is the SHINIEST AND SOFTEST EVER. I never have all this breaking people say happens when dry brushing. maybe because I comb instead and get all the knots out AHEAD of time. I'm telling you guys. A little 3 Minute miracle and air drying and you will see that coat SWING...UH... if there is enpugh to actually swing:p :p

I'm so glad to know it's ok to air dry. Even though I put the dryer on low heat, Lucy doesn't like it. I always wrap her in a towel, clean out her ears, and hold her for a little while before I blow dry her, but as soon as the dryer comes out she starts trembling. I'm going to try it your way at her next bath. I hate when she's afraid of something that has to be done.

i have never used the blow drier on snickers (altho every 6wks i am sure they do at the groomers) and i can testify to the deeep conditioner by Aussie
i alternate that and the $10 day to day kit from cc systems... i still have both and have had them since february... so in short $4 each for the Aussie Shampoo and Deeep Conditioner and $10 for the 4 step cc kit = a minumum of 6months grooming for $18
i have to admit tho - i have been thru 2 brushes that i hated for her i DID break down and get the gold series 20mm brush from cc systems

Till this day, I've never seen a dog that likes to be blow dried plus to me, I actually feel blow drying hair isnt good for people or dogs. It dries the hair out and people wonder why their hair and their dogs hair gets dry or dull looking. Both of my puppies hate the dryer more than any part of the bath. I also pick up stuff at dollar general for my dogs. I got a mixed bag of stuff a while back it had 6 peices in it for 5 bucks and it came in a cute little draw string clear plastic bag which I can use to put bows, hair brushes, etc in. I say little but its actually pretty big bag. And so far these two puppies have played with the toys that came in that bag more than they do the more expensive toys. I do use cowboy magic shampoo, conditioner and detangler as I like it and it is NOT expensive. A little goes a long way. I use vinegar and water to take away waste odors and then I have some spray and dry carpet cleaner for pet odor I spray after the vinegar on my carpet. It smells great and it came from dollar general also. I also bought a bottle of OUT at tractor supply. It suppose to remove all kind of stains including vomit, urine, poop and blood. So far, I love it and I paid 5 bucks for a 32 oz. bottle and it smells really good. My house never smells of pet odors. I cant remember what else i've purchased there but many things for my house cleaning and also for my pet. two little beds at 10 bucks each and they love to lay on those. So I just dont think you need to spend your life savings on dogs, I have better things to do with my money. But I'm not one for dressing them up except for bows which I get lots of those from law dog bows on here but I get some at the dollar store too. Good luck to every one on shopping and saving. Dang gas is so high now and hubby drives 100 miles each and every day to work and back and that alone gets expensive. But my dogs have just as much fun playing with the cheap toys as expensive ones.

Oh I am SO happy to hear that other people air dry their dogs as well! Howie really hates the blow dryer. He let out this horrible noise the only time I tried using it and I decided never again. I wrap him up in a little towel cocoon to absorb some water and then I just let him shake out his hair and run around. He looks a little funny while it dries, but he's happy!!

I know you may not believe this....but my 4 yorkies all LOVE to be blow dried! They snuggle, lay down with their bums up in the air and generally just enjoy it. I prop the blow dryer on my foot while sitting on the floor and just brush them while they are drying from a legs length away. I take them outside on hot days to air dry but it is always to cool in the house due to air condtioning to let them air dry in here.

I just sent Blue Buffalo a email, hoping they will send me a sample to try, sounds like a great dog food. How much do you pay for it? Thanks for the great info!

I have to admit it is ONE of the extravagances I have for the dogs. It's on the top end of pricing but I really believe in it. And believe me.. I am ALWAYS looking for deals so if something is top dollar and I STILL buy it.. It has to be WONDERFUL:thumbup:
So far I have found it in petsmart and Pet valu but no place else around her....BUT>>>> WOHOOO they are opening up a new Petsmart near me in a few weeks . Right now there are 2 , but they are 25 and 30 minutes away. This new one will only be 15 minutes away.
I have to admit tI LOVE the one 25 minutes away. It's older and VERY large and they always have great clearance stuff:thumbup:

Be careful with the pupcorn dog treat, my family's dog(weinie dog) ate those and vomited all over the place after having just one! It might have just been her...but she never had a weak stomach until then!

Really. My dogs love them. But I'm sure it's just like with humans....some don't tolerate certain foods too well.

Thanks Yorkieangel for all the tips, and my gang of 7 yorkies love to air dry. The blow dryer scares them to much.

Umm, okay, Ginger has really dry skin, and I have a really stupid question about olive oil.

In their food or on their skin?????


I'm going to try the combing, the three minute miracle and the combing. Do I understand you right, you comb before and then not again until after they're completely air dried???

I use it IN their food. jut a bit . Like maybe 1/4 teaspoon with each feeding and just swish the kibble around so it coats it. You can also use vegetable oil if your wanting to save even more money. I found it actually works as good as the Olive oil.

I comb out any knots wash with shampoo of choice. ( i actually am always trying new stuff from dollar store stuff to expensive stuff) then I squeeze any water off them and then slather on the AUSSIE 3 minute Miracle DEEEEP and wait 3 minutes if I can. Sometimes I get impatient after 1 minute and just rinse it off but 3 minutes works better. Then just rinse with warm water and then towel dry and let them air dry. Then when COMPLETELY dry I use the fine tooth steel flea comb to comb them out


OH>>> I also found out if you use WARM and not cool rinse... for some reason the hair comes out better. Don't ask me why.. it just DOES:rolleyes:

thought I would add.. I found that the BIG Tub of hair cholesterol helps their coat as well.. leave on for 2 mins and rinse... gets rid of tangles and makes their coats soft and shiny.. same thing with that aloe vera serum.... works great ...a little goes along way....

Thanks! I made the assumption that you meant in their food (lol) and added a little to her final feeding. She gobbled it up!!!

One more question, how often do you bathe your yorkies???

Okay, I know you said (cheap) any shampoo, but another thread recommended oatmeal. Tomorrow is bath day, but I just couldn't wait! I bathed her in the new oatmeal shampoo that I picked up at Petsmart 1/2 hour ago, and used the 3 minute miracle that I bought earlier this afternoon. She's currently "air drying". LOL it's really funny, she runs around, shakes, and comes back and sits by my feet. I'm pretty sure she's waiting for me to dry her.

I'm skeptical though...think we're going to have curly butt!:rolleyes:
