Mountain Goat Yorkies!!! Anybody else have a yorkie who thinks it's a MOUNTAIN GOAT:eek: I CAN"T keep my pearl from climbing and jumping off things. i think she is a true daredevil at heart. She climbs up to anything she can... Sofa's dressers EVERYTHING... Then takes a leap and JUMPS OFF:eek:  . I might add Pearl is only 2 1/2 pounds and very very small boned and I have NO IDEA why she hasn't broken any bones yet:rolleyes: . I'm CONSTANTLY getting her down and trying to rearrangethings so she can't get up. I'ts INSANE. Yesterday my back was turned and I felt something whoosh past my leg and give a thump when it hit the ground...it was PEARL jumping off my highboy dresser that was 5 freaking ft. in the air and landing on the hardwood floor. She just landed and kept going with a run as I chased her  I swear that dog is a dang MOUNTAIN GOAT. She went from a chair to leaping straight up about another 3 feet to the top of the high boy. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT SHE COULD!!!!!!! 3 days ago I caught her playing the piano by walking across the keys:p I still have NO IDEA how she go there because I removed the bench months ago when she was using that to get up there and have no idea how she got up on the keys. Nobody else was home so I KNOW nobody helped her up. |

OMG that's hilariuos but scarey at the same time.. that little doggie is two kinds of crazy lol maybe she thinks she is a cat well maybe you could get her some kind of padding to put on her like a helmet and knee pads? what about that spray they make that is supposed to keep pets off of places that you don't want them? kinda reminds me of that little boy in the movie big mam's house 2 where he was jumping off his bunk bed and the kitchen cabinets! good luck at stopping the jumping though she may get hurt i hope that doesn't happen! |
LOL.. I think she likes the THRILL of the flying through the air:rolleyes: She needs a dang PARACHUTE:D Actually she climbs MORE then my cat:animal36 |
i think you should video it maybe send it to americas funniest animals or that funniest videos show maybe you could win some cash-ola from her hi flying hijinks! |
OMG.... I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh through your whole post....LOL... I was just picturing your little baby jumping from everything... Sorry I don't know how to help but I know it's really not funny. I would be having a heart attack if my little lucy was like that. I'm sooo overprotective over her. Hopefully someone can help Crystal |
Oh My! You are very fortunate that she hasn't broken a leg or worse. I hope that you can find a way to keep her from climbing before she hurts herself. Good Luck! |
Wow, that is scary. You have a real daredevil there. Ollie has learned how to get onto the kitchen table, but she doesn't jump off. S now we have to make sure the chairs are all pushed in. |
It's so scary to have one like that! Shylah is a jumper, but she's not that small! |

I KNow I know.... I keep picturing fractured legs and broken ribs and all kinds of things. She DOESN"T care how high it is.. she JUMPS:eek: What I can't believe is how high she gets in the first place. I keep getting her down from places you can't even imagine she would get to:confused: I can get her down and set her down and then wham... she is right back there before I can even blink an eye. And I just stand there scratching my head because she did it so fast without me seeing:confused:  |
OMGness... That would totally freak me out!!! The possibility of her breaking a limb :2omg: far out weighs the humor of the situation. Sorry I can't offer any suggestions...Especially since I have one hybrid myself! He absolutely refuses to walk down an entire flight of steps. He gets down to the last four or five and just takes to the air!!! And, I've done every thing imaginable to try and stop him...Even spent well over $300 in x-ray bills checking for broken limbs as a result of his attempts at flying! The Vet just laughs, shakes her head and says something relative to "good growth plates" I'd certainly would like to see what others offer as suggestions. GOOD LUCK with your little lady! |
Sorry, I have no advice to offer. Sissy can only jump on the sofa, the back of the sofa, and chairs, but she will then climb onto the tables. She also takes flying leaps off everything. We have always called her a Mountain Goat for climbing to the back of sofas. She even tries to climb up to the back of the office chair when I'm on the computer!! She is also known as a Flying Squirrel for the leaps she takes. She gets such huge air and quite a distance for her tiny frame. She is 4 lbs, but looks like a 2 1/2 pounder size-wize. We have tried to discourage her from jumping down, with little success. I also worry all the time about her breaking her legs or falling on her head. Luckily she is only jumping down from lower surfaces. Our bed is pretty high and she can only get up there if lifted onto it, but she'll fly off that too - that is the one that really freaks me out. Good luck to you and your baby. I'm not sure how that little daredevil is getting to all those high places, but may God continue to be with her! |
I am sooo glad you posted about Pearl. I have exactly the same problem ! Piccolo, though, is 3 1/2 pounds but still I think he's small. He climbs EVERYTHING like a cat or a monkey. Yesterday in a park a women just fell in love with him and she picked him up ( after asking my permission) and before I could tell her to hold him tight - he just jumped down. And the women was at least 6 feet high. We both screamed and Piccolo climbed on a picnic table and jumped down again over the bench. That was the end of our walk and when we came home I put him on a leash which I tied around my waist. I can't risk any more leaping or flying...He has no fright of hights and beeing 8 months old he should know better, lol...And i am going to keep him on a leash for a while hoping he'll grow up of it. |
All 3 of mine are climbers but only Spike is a jumper. He's 5 lbs so its not as scary as Pearl but I still don't like it. I always say he thinks he's a flying squirrel because he can't just jump down from something, he has to jump way out too. Good luck with your little Pearl. Sounds like her bones are made of rubber. |
Buddy is a jumper but he is 13.7lbs. I worry about his legs but there is no holding him down. I had no idea these furbabies could jump so high. When he was 4months I had a baby gate up across the kitchen. When I came home he was on the other side. I then had to use two gates! One on top of the other. Your baby is really tiny. I don't know how to stop them. I wish I could help you. How do you hold a monkey down? |
How old is she? I was thinking if she's fairly young that maybe it's like babies who learn to walk really young. They don't seem to develop the brains to go with the ability until later. My brother learned to walk at 9 mos. and he would walk off anything, tables, stairs, benches etc. He didn't seem to recognize the difference in height. So maybe she'll get smarter and learn that some things are beyond her ability, hopefully anyway. Other than that I have no suggestions, just hope her luck seems to hold. She does sound adorable though. :) :) |
Mine too! My dog is the same way! He is a nut. I call him the squeaky mountain goat. He climbs EVERYTHING just to climb it or jump off. I keep trying to stop him from jumping as people tell me I shoudlnt' let him pound his body like that because of long term damage...but try to stop a bouncing ball? He is fast and happy. He also likes to bring stuff up on the couch and drop it down. I guess he likes to see things fall. suz |
How about weighing her down with an anchor? Or hobble her front legs as you do it with horses? Or cut all the furniture down to 3 inches? LOL! just kidding! Unfortunately I don't have a realistic idea how to keep her safe. Let's all pray that nothing will happen until you find something. :aimeeyork |
Wow, get that dog into an agility class! My Yorkie is a climber but not a jumper. I discovered her climbing abilities when I left a piece of pizza on a desk and turned my back for three minutes. When I turned around, there she was, standing on the empty plate and licking it. How does a 5.6 lb dog eat an 8-oz slice of pizza? Now I have to be careful to turn the office chair around so that she can't get onto the desk. When I forget, I find her sleeping on the keyboard of my laptop. |
Daisy likes to climb all over us in bed! We call her Queen of the hill. and if it Thunders shes up there shaken and panting. Once I was woke up to her on my head. |
Mojo doesn't do this, but it sounds cute and funny. Mojo just has the "little dog syndrom" where he thinks he is as big and tough and a Mastif! |
Adie's mother is a climber. Her mom found her on top of the refridgerator one day!!!!!! I fear Adie has inheritaed the mountain goat gene. She actually used her little toenails to climb the back of the couchfrom the floor! She is only 12 weeks old but her balance is amazing. |
Our 13 year old stays upstairs now by her choice but we are so thankful she has never broken a limb. ANd this is after countless times falling/rolling down the stairs we have in our split level house. Now we have a new addition and wondering when she will start attempting the stairs. Can anyone offer some advice on stair training? Our dog was already adults when we moved into our home. |

I know its not funny but I can't help laughing at your post. My Trixie sounds just like your baby. She will climb and jump off of anything. During the summer when she was only 6 months old and weighed about your baby's weight she jumped off my mother's deck. It's a good 12 feet  I thought she killed herself but nope, not my Trixie. She went running through the yard and I couldn't catch her little butt. She was perfectly fine. Every once in awhile I'll find her on top of my kitchen table. Chairs are always pushed in so I know she isn't jumping to them and then to the table. I haven't got a clue (just like you) on how she gets on the things that she does. Then I have my other yorkie who's terrified of heights  If anyone has any help I would also really appreciate it ;) |
:D I know what you mean about the Mountain Goat. Not only do they climb and jump, often my three climb UP to "steal" treasures" so they are jumping down with something in their mouth. Someone needs to design a harness with a built in parachute that automatically deploys.....:D |
RE- Little Mountain Yorkie :aimeeyork If she's that little, she probably just likes the height and getting a different view! Bless! When Bunty wants to go anywhere, she stands with her arms up against the couch and just looks around hopefully, waiting for someone to help her up! |

But I do know what you mean about not being able to stop her from doing it, short of keeping her TIED DOWN. My dogs climb all over EVERYTHING, and then jump down. It does make me nervous, b/c of all the stories I've heard about broken bones. Mazie too is less than 3 lbs., and the vet has sd that her patellas are "borderline", so I worry particularly about her. But she was at the vet the other day, and I asked him to check, and he sd. that everything is looking really good! THESE BABIES! Just like real kids, they are determined to worry us mommies! :D |
