Jaxon is always on a leash outside. We've let him run free a couple of times but he plays the 'keep away' game when we try to get him. I've really been working on outdoor potty training but I know it will be tough in the winter. Right now we always go for a little walk around 6am and usually that's a guaranteed poop and at least 2-3 pees. Once it's cold I'm sure it won't be as easy so we're going to build an enclosure below our deck so Jaxon can go there when it's cold. Hopefully he'll like the idea! |
If you don't have a fenced yard you can get a large X-pen. They even have tops for them if you're worried about hawks and such. Look on ebay, they have pretty good deals on all kinds of stuff. |

The one I have you can fold it to make it smaller. The smallest you can get it is two feet by two feet, which is four feet square, and the largest you can make it is four feet by four feet, which is 16 feet square. It is 24 inches high. Mine is a metal one. You can make it different shapes too, like L shape, square, rectangle, triangle, and octagonal. It is very versatile. It travels easily too. I have had mine for about a year now and it's still in great shape. I am always putting it in different positions and using it outside too. I think one of these would work for you. |

Our boys don't go out without a leash unless they're in their playpen on the deck. We don't have a fenced area for them yet so we bought 3 of the soft sided playpens and we hook them together so they have a pretty good sized area to play but I still watch them closely because they're small and they can squeeze out of they want to. Once we get the inside fo the house done we're heading to the outside...the deck railing will be rebuilt with lattice so they can't get out and we'll have gates at the entrance...there will also be a grassy area with a fence that matches the deck railing so they can get out in the grass. Now we just have to figure out how to install a doggie door through the logs. I'll be so glad when it's all done! |
we just got our yard fenced a week ago , but before that, Kizzy DID NOT go out without her harness and leash. now i never put anything on her. she just runs out in the yard and it feels so good to not have to go with her everytime, but for 2 or 3 days after we got the fence she wouldnt go off the deck unless I went with her. She still dont want to after dark, So hubby put up flood light today to shine in the fenced yard. so now it will be even better. |
Max and Abbie are always on a leash when I take them outside. They both have run out the door on me (not at the same time, thank God) and they were so fast that it took me a while to catch them. I'm just afraid that they will take off and either be hit by a car or run into the woods then I'll never be able to find them :( |
Louie is good about staying close when we are outside, but I always make sure he is on leash when we go out. I live close to a major highway and would never take a chance in him getting in the road. There are also a lot of stray dogs around that I don't want him near. You never know what could happen. |
Well I use to until like a few months ago...Now Teddy and Tiffanie are pretty good @ staying in our yard..Altho Tiffanie is a bird chaser for some reason, she will run through the neighbors back yards chasing them but when I holler Tiff get over here now she comes right back..Teddy isn't one to chase anything! Now that the pups are here and I'm taking them out they stay in the yard pretty good with them and so does the pups...I take them out front in the evening (All 6) and I have a newspaper and stand on the sidewalk and if they (Any of them) come toward me I swat it in my hand or clap my hands and say a FIRM NO and they go back...I don't want them running up to ANYONE if they are walking...Now Tiffanie should go into heat next month and NO WAY will she be out without a LEASH...TO RISKY!! & I take her out back and Teddy out front...So he can't get to her...NO puppies this time...Next Spring..Hugs, Lee |
Our yard is fenced in at home but only the deck is at our cabin, so when we take them out there they're on a leash 100% of the time. Since the road in front of our house is pretty far away, we used to let Mocha off-leash for a quick pee a few years ago. However, with wildlife around and with the chance that she could run, I thought that it just wasn't worth the risk. It's a little annoying having to hook them up every time, but it's well worth it. |
I have Jazzie on a leash at all times. She listens to me well and knows the "Come" and "Down" commands really well but you never know. She is allowed off leash during puppy meet-up within at condo complex parking lot and at my husbands work because she does listen to commands but outside of that, leash always. |
Trixie is on a leash ALL the time. I learned this one quickly. When I first got her, I was lazy one night and thought: "she'll go potty right away anyway and I'll just pick her back up and carry her inside." She ran off and I have never been that scared in my life. She listens really well, but if she sees something that she can chase, she'll run after it until she gets it. |
