Breeding my Yorkie for the first time. I want to breed my little girl for the 1st time. She is 1 1/2 yrs old and getting ready to come into her 3rd heat. I've breed other dogs in the past (15 yrs ago). I talk to a lady that has a 7 mo. old male that's unproven. I have a couple of question that I'm hopping someone can answer for me. 1) Is 7 mos to young for a stud? I was always told the male should be at least 9 mos old. 2) What is the going rate for an unproven stud? She wants either the pick of the litter or money. She is leaving that decision up to me. But she would prefer pick of the litter which I'm not in favor of at all. I was under the impression that you didn't change anything for an unproven stud. THe two should have some nice puppies too, my yourkie "Miss Scarlet" weights 5.8 lbs and the little stud "Buster" weights 3.5. Any suggestions here would be wonderful |
I think pick of the litter is too high of a price for an unproven stud. I would pay a small stud fee. |
I believe the male is too young. I have heard the male should be at least 9 months and preferably over a year. I also think you would be better off with a stud fee than pick of the litter since yorkie litters are so small and depending on where you live puppies can sell for much more that a normal stud fee. I'm not a breeder though. |
I think the AKC will recognize a stud if he is 7 months old but he is still really young to be a stud. |
If you are going to pay a stud fee, make sure there is a guarantee that the female must get pregnant. I think the little stud you may use may be a bit too young.... Good luck. :) Keep us posted. :) |
I think pick of the litter is quite high, but I know my breeder gets that from her studs. I think for an unproven stud and especifally such a young one, the fee should be less. |

unproven merely means "he has never been a daddy" a proven male is one that has successfully sired a litter. |
I would check with AKC first because they may not paper that litter because of the males age. Also that is the going deal around here the pick of the litter or a Stud fee. In which here it was 700.00 Whether it takes or not so that is why I wouldn't use a unproven stud. As for the pick I wouldn't do that deal either because it is your 1st litter she may only have 1 -2 because she is smaller 5.8. If it were me I would agree for a fee to use him so she can have him proven. Or if there were 2 puppies agree to give them one but If there is only 1 female I would have the right to sell it to pay for the Breeding Experience who knows C section..............But whatever you do make it a CONTRACT signed and dated by you and the Stud's owner. |
I just realized I posted 9 months - when I meant 7 months here is what the AKC reg's are AKC Rules do not allow, except with special documentation, the registration of a litter out of a dam under 8 months or over 12 years of age at the time of mating, or by a sire under 7 months or over 12 years of age at the time of mating. That being said I still would not recommend such a young stud. Often young studs can not perform (they will do their best but many will fail or go through the motions) Also his size can be a hinderance he will more than likely need breeding assistance, like lap breeding to insure a tie and for him not to be injured) JMT's |
Miss Scarlets 1st litter Thank you to everyone for the great advise. I was really having second thoughts about using a 7 mo old male dog for a stud. Now I'm back on the search for a nice little male to breed with my yorkie. Does anyone know a good reliable breeded in the Tulsa, ok. area? ::aimeeyork |

Because if you did not, then what right do you have to call him out of standard, ugly,and sick?? Every breeder started out the same knowing little to nothing about breeding. Through lots of research and help and experience they are where they are today. Everyone has to start off somewhere. Oh and where do you get off calling this person a backyard breeder or puppymill?? You don't know them, you don't know there intentions. Sure they said they done breeding before, but that was fifteen years ago and for all you know it could have been a completely different breed. And I did get some very good advise, but I agree that the lady I met, that has the 7mo old male should wait till he is older to stud him out. He is a really pretty yorkie and not at all a "sick and/or ugly" little guy that should be fixed. No one should make such a harsh comment without proof. Same of you. I will continue to look for a nice male here around oklahoma |
