Question About Puppy Mills Please Read! Ok i went with my friend today because she was looking for a sugar glider so we went to a pet store well when we first walked in the smell about made me pass out! well we walked over to the areawhere they keep them but they didn't have any but right next to it they had a huge selection of puppies! Obviously i wouldn't buy one but we did look at them there was a cocker spaniel pup who had diareah so bad he couldn't find a new place to poop let alone lie down, there was a mini shnouser that had diareah all over him from the pup above him and they were in like a plexiglass front with a wood backing stacked on top of eachother no bars for air to get in or out and i was sweating out in the open i couldn't imagine how they felt! Well my friend seen the cutest tiny chiuaha and she was asking some questions about it like if it was papered and stuff. Well knowing about pet stores and puppy mills i butted in and asked where he gets his puppies from and this is what he told me " I get my puppies from a broker that is how it's done now" so i asked him don't you mean a puppy mill? He said" there is no such thing as a puppy mill anymore that peta is showing videos that are like 20 yrs old and that stuff isn't done anymore" Well i asked him what he thought was the difference between a broker and a puppy mill and he told me"people in the mid us all they do is breed dogs so they have 6-20 dogs that are breeding at once they keep them in industrial coups like industrial chicken coups and then they sell them to the brokers and i buy them from there and have them shipped by truck to me" He must have seen the look of disgust on my face because he quickly added " not semi trucks like a little van"(Whats the diff right) he also said " no one could keep up with the amount of dogs i sell to buy them locally so i buy them else where. I was so flamin i about smacked the guy for being so stupid i said oh wow really and turned to my friend rolled my eyes and said lets go. So i guess my question is this is there any truth to what he is saying? Also my friend asked how big the dog would get and he told her under 3 lbs how could he know this when he knows nothing about the parents? :thumbdown |
anyone?????? |
He was trying to sell you more than just a puppy. What a bunch of bull. There are many, many mills in America. To me, what he was describing was a small one. Dogs living in chicken coups to be used for breeding=MILL! |
He is full of crap. He gets the puppies from brokers or auction lists online. Those people are supplied by puppymills. It works out great for the puppymills because they don't have time to place all of those dogs since they have so many to pump out. The reason he doesn't get his dogs locally is because the midwest has the most puppymills in the country and sells puppies the cheapest by the truckload. And yes I said truckload. Everyone involved, from the puppymill to the brokers to the Petstores are ONLY concerned about turning a profit. They are ONLY breeding these dogs for money. It's really discusting. |
I totally agree with the others. Also,I think you should call your local humane society and report the filthy conditions that these poor puppies are forced to live in. I really admire the way you talked to that guy...good for you!:bravo: |

I just wanted to add that living close to PA (another big puppy mill state) I've seen undercover stories on puppy mills done by reporters from major T.V. stations. No animal rights groups were involved. They just show the cold, hard truth. |
Those poor puppies. And you know if you were trying to sell something wouldn't you try and keep it nice and clean. I mean like if you sell a house don't you pick up before people come over the same with a car you vacuum it out before someone comes to look at it. I know these are puppies and not property to sell, that's not what I'm saying I'm just saying that he looks at them like property (I'm sure) so wouldn't you think he would try to keep up them nice and shiney to make it easier to sell. I don't have personal experience with puppy mills but I definately believe they still exist. And really how could he know they didn't. I guess he could know where he's getting his puppies from and whether its a mill or not but he can't know about where everyone else gets their puppies. You know whether he got his puppies from a mill or not I don't think I'd buy a puppy from him anyway, I wouldn't want to support the conditions he allows the puppies to be in. |
Well i'm not looking to buy but it breaks my heart to see this suffering and i will make a phone call do i just call my local shelter? |

Most pet shops that sell live animals really break my heart. We only have one in town -- I try to avoid going there, in fact I only go there to pick up puppy food. And then, of course, I have to go and check out the puppies and kittens, and all of the birds -- :thumbdown It is so sad to think that the only way to get these stores to stop selling live animals is to quit buying them. But if we don't buy them, then what happens to all of the innocents behind bars? |
Way to go Amber_IV  Amber, thank you  for standing up for these little guys who have no voice. |
Yes definitely report them. How could that idiot expect people to want to buy a puppy with diarrhea. What a load of crap, in more ways than one. |

I would contact the humane society and let them do an investigation. Not only for the unsanitary conditions but to also investigate where they are getting their puppies from. They are obviously very sick. I don't know how you kept from losing your temper and just cussing him out. |

where I live and they gave me a contact # for animal control they also check out complaints which they did because I followed through. ASPCA if you have one will also check into this. I wish they could put the store owner in one of those filthy cases for a week! |
Broker and Puppymill...same difference, it's still dishonorable breeding. As for the dogs size, well if the dogs come w/ papers, he could know something about the parents, but my vet told me theres really no calculation or way to tell a dogs exact size is going to be when it's gets older. |

Puppy mills suck and we all should do what we can, sign petitions, don't buy anything at stores that sells puppies and whatever you can think of. I know how hard it is to see these poor puppies in the windows, it breaks my heart everytime I walk past a store. I wish I could do more. How's peeka doing? |
he's doing better a little sore today. thanks! :D |

Ok guys i called the animal control and told them what was going on she said they were gonna send an officer out right away and also she would call me back and let me know what was going on! I hope this works and he gets shut down i also told her that he ships his pups there in trucks! I will let you all know what happens! |
Amber, I am so glad you contacted help for those poor animals! Yes there are puppymills and the "brokers" get their supply from them. I know because my Pepper is a puppymill puppy. I bought him in a Petstore before I knew where they come from. He has a very serious neurological illness that is going to end his life very soon. He has already lived longer than the vet's thought he would...they said he would die before he was a year old, he is now 2 1/2 years old. Pepper came from Arkansas to California via the biggest "broker" in the country. I have just in the last month found his breeder and after a few very heated e-mails (and giving everything I know about her to the humane society) she has finally agreed to stop breeding Pepper's mom. I will never know if she does but at least I know the HSUS has their eyes on her! This doesn't help anyone else who has gotten puppies from her and it doesn't help Pepper at all but at least I can try to comfort myself thinking there won't be any more to suffer the way he does! Thank you from Pepper and all of the other ones like him that you took a stand for them. I hope they are shut down...btw the store that I got him from HAS BEEN SHUTDOWN FOR GOOD! |

Thats good that your doing all you can do to stop it from happening to future pups. |
Good job, for reporting them, if everyone did this, maybe it would help end this " pet store dilemma" Brokers are the middle man between the mills and the buyer.. who does the broker get the dogs from? As him that, And for him to say they don\'t exist is the most ignorant thing I\'ve heard lately. Yes, they come on trucks,,big ones, that I have seen loaded to the brim with stacks of cages of mother and pups. the most horribe thing to see, at the Dog Auction in Walnutcreek Ohio,, land of Puppy Mills,, after the Auctions,,where do you think they go,,to the Brokers, who ship them off to Pet stores, for quite a profit, then in turn the stores make another HUGE PROFIT. Thats why the dogs cost 1,000\'s and Up.. with no medical history, they have no regard for these animals at all. It infuriates me. That owner needs a little literature delivered to him,,to prove to him how stupid his statements he said are. Tell him to watch the HBO documentary entirely about Puppy Mills,, Oh they exists alright. |
