What stores can dogs go into I was just wondering what stores are dogs allowed into, beside the usual pet stores???? I know I got kicked out of the Super Wal-mart here in my town. They said it was considered a grocery store, so no dogs were allowed which is understandable. I wouldn't want dog hairs flying around the food I buy, although yorkies don't shed, but others do. Do you guys know if dogs are allowed all stores? Or just certain ones that are not grocery stores? Or does it depend on the store manager???? Let me know I don't like to get kicked out of stores with my baby. |
Well any store that carries food def. doesn't allow pets.. it's the law. If you google pet friendly places, you'll find a website with guides to different websites that tell you places where dogs are allowed. :) |

I recently took zoe to the mall in a pet stroller and everyone gave me a weird look but the thing was...HE STARTED BARKING!! The mall is a open area so there were echoes of his bark everywhere that I had to cut shopping short and take him home. He's CRAZY! |

I think it's a liability thing. If they let one in they have to let them all in and then eventually someone is going to get bitten and the store will be sued. Can't blame the stores for wanting to protect themselves, in fAct it might not even be the store manager, but rather the insurance companies that forbid it. We live in a sue happy society. |
I took Schatzi into a Payless Shoe store last week, and no one said anything to me... I tend to not want to risk taking her into places that carry food items, so places like Target and Walmart, grocery store, restaurants, etc. are out:( I have heard that if you go to a restaurant and eat outside on the patio or deck, that it's ok, but I haven't tried it yet. I think if you have a quiet dog that will stay in a carrier, you have a better chance of sneaking them in places- oh yeah, I took Schatzi to the post office, too! |

I work at Michaels arts and crafts and My store allows dogs as long as they are either held or in the basket. they are only allowed to walk on the leash if they are seeing eye dogs. |
Check out www.dogfriendly.com they have a pretty good list of places that allows dogs. In Southern California (Orange County), there are a couple of outdoor malls that are dog friendly and you can take them into most stores there including the department stores. Jazzie loves going to them and has been in stores like Borders Book Store & Victoria's Secrets! Other places that allows dogs (at least by me) are Home Depot, Lowes & some Barnes & Nobels. She is also allowed at many restaurants in the patio dining area like Red Robins & Mimi's. |
I take Gus everywhere with me. All my local stores (including the market) know us and don't have a problem with Gus being there as long as he stays in his bag. I once had someone complain at coldstone (costumer) and told the store manager. The manager came up to me and told me that in the future to please leave the dog at home. He didn't ask me to leave but I was pissed and told my husband that someone had a problem with me having Gus in the store so I was going to wait for him outside out loud so that everyone can hear. A lady at the back of the line stoped me as I was walking out and said out loud,, some people have to have something to bit** about. They would have never known he was there if it weren't for my daughter talking baby talk into his bag. Someone ratted me out at Target once also. The manager came out and told us that dogs were not allowed in the store "UNLESS IT WAS A SERVICE DOG" and gave me a wink. I just hope Manny doesn't get transferred anytime soon! I don't know if I can get away with the lie with out showing proof. |

Mia went to the bank with me yesterday, and caused quite the commotion with everyone trying to get a peak into her carrier. The manager was telling me that a lady with a great dane showed up about a week ago, coming back from the groomer's or something, but they were fine with it. They actually seemed very happy that Mia was small and in a carrier. She goes into Blockbuster, some pet friendly malls, some not pet friendly malls with the condition that we only go to the pet supplies store located at the mall. We are allowed to sit on the patio of coffee shops, but not inside. When we go into stores she always stays in her bag. Even at Petsmart. That way I don't have to worry about her getting sick from whatever is on the floor, or worry that she will pee all over the place. If she starts whining, we leave the store. |
I have gone into Wal Mart here once, but was nervous they would ask me to leave. I just had to pick something up and was out. I always try to be nice, but if someone gave me grief about one of my dogs, I would get defensive and mouthy. So..I usually don't take them into any stores with me although I want to so bad. |

Our branch also had a pet hamster for the kids to look at when they came in so we were a pretty pet friendly bunch! |
we go everywhere I've taken Sparks almost everywhere. If it doesn't have food, I let him pop his head out: Kaufmanns, mall, Sears, you name it...I've been in it. If it is a Target or Walmart...I don't even chance it (I conceal him). I have two carriers...one looks like a hobo bag (got it from walmart) and the other a celltei. Both conceal VERY well. I've been in convienent stores, cold stone (buy it and then leave and eat it outside), pizza places (again...just to buy a slice and leave), etc. He does not make noise for short periods of time and if I am carrying the bag. We are currently working on staying in the bag quietly and longer so that I can sneak him to work with me sometimes. No one ever knows that he is in there if he is quiet or not moving. |
I work at a movie store and I see people bring dogs in all the time! I don't say anything if they are being carried but I also don't give them great service. I have had one dog pee on my shelving and another poo on the floor and I had to clean it up! (not in my job discription) I only take my dogs to the park, vet and pet store and I think others should do the same. IMO. |
I think it depends on the individual store and the people there and I think the "laws" depend on where you live too. :2popkorn: |
well i've taken morgan with her everywhere the past few days in her carrier. We went to the post office, petco, target, comp usa, and best buy. She was concealed in her carrier and no one said anything at all. i thought i was gonna be found out in comp usa cause as i was standing there the bag kept moving back and forth, but the sales guy just looked at me and winked and continued his business. hehe Morgan is very good in the bag and doesn't cry while we're moving. if i stand still too long tho she'll whimper. |
Besides the pet stores the only places I have seen dogs around here is Home depot and Menards |
I think I would rather risk being found out and asked to leave than leave my baby alone in the car. I had a dark idea. How about we get one of our lovely seamstresses on here to sew us up some service dog vests! Legally, a store manager cannot ask what your disability is. Have some matching booties so baby can walk on the leash and not pick up anything! Am I serious? |
I've taken Jax to Walgreens, Kohls, TJ Maxx, Bealls, and Stein Mart. The bank drive through always gives him treats also!!! No one notices him but when someone does, it's over. We just have to leave - not because of them but because of Jax. The second someone gives attention to him, he expects it from every single person that walks by. He just keeps jumping out of the bag trying to get people to notice him. |
Phoebe goes everywhere with me also~ We have yet to be asked to leave. I will not take her to food places unless we're outside. I would not want someone bringing their dog in while I'm eating in a rest. or at a grocery store so I don't do it. Places Pheebs and I have gone :) Office Max Target Walmart Borders Book Store Walgreens Michaels A local paper store the mall-shopping for clothes for myself Sam's Club Blockbuster Phoebe doesn't make noise if I am moving. And people never notice her unless I say something. I went to the vet on Sat. and they thought I left her in the car b/c they thought my carrier was my purse, ha. |
thank u for a good laugh! Quote:
I've had a pretty crappy day, and for some reason this post craked me up/cheered me up. I looked at your avator, and could just imagine Jax's little teddy bear face popping in and out of his bag. Hilarious. |

LOL - I just got home from an awful day and sat down at the computer to brighten it. This post was the perfect thing to make me smile! :) I literally just finished prancing into my local liquor store with my two little girls tucked up under my arm and bought a cheap bottle of wine! :D The store owner was very gracious and smiled saying he wished he could do the same with his GSD. It was 100 degrees here today and even now is in the low 90s with too much humidity hanging in the air! I've had the girls in: Barnes & Noble, Borders, Lowe's, Home Depot, Michael's, the Mall (including in the food court briefly), Sam's, Linen's & Thing's, Dick's, and a couple of other local M&P stores. I use a Outward Hound stroller mostly - or in Lowe's, HD's and Michael's - the shopping cart. We've eaten at a lot of restaurant's with the dogs (including our GSD and Lab/Dobie mix) - on the patio's. We actually just got back from a great vacation to Charlotte, NC and the Smokies and we ate out just about every night. BTW - I can't recommend the Weston in Charlotte enough - they welcomed our 4 dogs with open arms and treated each one like royalty! All four are giving me big soft brown eyes about those Heavenly Dog Beds!:) Thanks YT for giving a lift to my day! Hopefully next week what turned out to be "inconclusive" test results regarding a breast mass today -will turn into good news next week after another go round. J |
I have taken my Peaches without a carrier into one Walmart in the city and they made me leave.... Then I took Peaches to a Walmart near me and they were fine. The workers even wanted to see her so they could pet her and talk on how adorable she was. LOL Home Depot was another I had no problems with. But, Watch Out once I get my carrier... hehehehheh :D |
I have taken Abbey into Target, Pet stores, uniform store, and Lowes. I have only had her 3 weeks, so we will definitely go more places. Abbey does just great. Never a sound out of her. I have one Sherpa tote that looks a lot like a purse and no one really knows the difference. I took her into Target once in a carrier that had larger mesh areas on the side. A clerk asked the pharmacist if I had a dog in there. I just turned and walked away acting as though I never heard her. I even took her into work (I am a nurse in a hospital) once when I had to attend a meeting (a co-worker kept her in her office while I was at my meeting) Everyone came by to look and play with her. On the way out of the hospital I passed a supervisor. It wasn't until I looked down that I saw that Abbey had her head out! No one said anything, tho and I just hurried to my car. (We do have pet therapy, and we capture, spay/neuter and feed all the feral cats that live around the hospital. I think that is a nice thing that we do) Ellie |
