my cousin has 4, and 4 very different personalities.... they were all raised the same, from babies and all ended up different... her "dapple" is feisty and my fav, Simon, he is a doll baby, but they are ALL a good bit over 7 pounds... Her biggest, Sammy, is almost 20 lbs... WOW... overall, I like all 4... they are precious |
Be sure about the breeder, my mom's doxy was supposed to be a mini but he now weighs 15 lbs. Also, he had major back problems and had to have a spinal fusion - $2000.00. We don't know how he injured his back but one day he could not move his back legs. Thankfully, after the surgery, he regained his movement and now walks fine - just a little stiffly. He also had a problem with the vertebrae in his neck last year, but it was cleared up with steroids and a neck brace - yes, he wore a neck brace for a month!!! I had a doxy when I was a kid who also had back problems and became paralzyed. I think this can be a problem since their backbone is so long, especially if they are overweight. And whomever said that they are garbage disposals was absolutely correct!!! |
My sister owns a Datsun!! She is a little sweetheart!! She has been more than pleased with her. She was fairly easy for her to train. She gets along great with my yorkies when we visit one another. |
My mom and I had a Miniature, Long hair, (blue) dapple doxie. He was the smartest sweetest dog I've ever had. I miss him sooooooo much. He had a disc diteriating disease and became paralized at only 1 1/2 yrs. old and we had the surgery but it did nothing for him. I'm not positive but I think there is a test you can run to find out if they have the disease just like with a yokie with LP/ I don't know for a fact but that may be something you want to check into. It cost us like $3,000.00 and he never got better. Crystal |
I had a friend who has a "mini" one and it's def. over 7 lbs. |
I have decided not to get one. I really want a Yorkie or Maltese so I will wait till i find one!! Thanks for all your info though! :):D |
[QUOTE=stedmansmommy]Hi, I've had Mini Dachsund's all my life, in fact, we have one now :) They are great dogs! My little Yorkie gets along G-R-E-A-T with my Dachsund. They play together CONSTANTLY! My Dachsund is solid Red (my FAVORITE color in the Dachsund). She is 3 years old and so cute! Never heard of a 7 lb Dachsund though, so good luck there! LOL. She's a Mini, and she's little, but not THAT little :p P.S.- If you do happen to get a Dachsund, BE WARNED: they eat EVERYTHING and I do mean EVERYTHING! They are like garbage disposals! lol. In fact, I call my Pippi that all the time lol :p This is a well know charachteristic of the Dachsund breed. They are Badger Hunters so their instinct is to hunt (mine likes to hunt bugs etc, LOL). Poop, pee, throw up, bugs, frogs, grass snakes, etc., etc...you name it, THEY EAT IT! Pretty disgusting, lol. All nasty eating habbits aside though, they are wonderful dogs to have around lol. She's Sooo Cute!:) Francie |
theres a house down the block from me who has about 7 of them if they ever get out RUN they hang onto you ankles and bite hard ask my friend ! im not a big fan of these dogs |

I don't recommend having a dachsund around a little Yorkie. When mine was 14 weeks old, my mother's dachsund attacked him and bit his jaw, which had to be operated on. Now I hate my mother's dog and dachsunds.:thumbdown |

Don't Hate The Dachsund! Quote:

I know I shouldn't hate the entire Dachsund breed, but now when I see one, I immediately tense up. I'm sure yours is great. I don't know what the problem is with my mother's Dachsund (Alice). She's just mean. She doesn't like kids (has tried to bite my son several times, as well as other kids), and when that happened to my little tiny baby I advised my dad that he better hide that dog!!!! Thanks for your nice message. My baby is fine now, but for 6 weeks he had to have his little mouth taped shut and I had to feed him with an eye dropper. He kind of looked like a hairy dolphin. Every now and then he would try so hard to stick his tongue out to lick us. :aimeeyork |
OMG yes!! I have a 3 month old daschund who is sweet as pie. Her name is Dixie and she is a short haired black and tan one. She and Muffin get along great. Good choice if you get one I think!:D |
