Is your yorkie affectionate? I have a 7 month old male yorkie, he is only cuddly when he sleeps on my bed at nite. He will cuddle as close as he can get. During the day he loves to play with his toys inside and out and loves to go for a walk,(great on a leash, no pulling at all, he's a natural) but when its his nap time he lays in his bed in whatever room I am in, (yes there are dog beds all over the house). When I try to pick him up and set him on my lap he is a wiggle bug and I have to put him down and he goes back to his bed. Is this a puppy thing and will he get more cuddly as he grows older or is this just his personality? Anyone? |
Cali is 13 months old and she has gotten more cuddlely in the last 2 months, so it may be just a puppy thing. |
He is just too tired. I like a grumpy baby that just wants to nap. When he is older he will change. |

Thanks I feel better knowing this is a probably a puppy thing, cuz I really love this little one. Good point too about being a tired baby. Thanks for input.:) |
This probably really is his personality. My dogs love to sleep with me - but they really like to sleep at the foot of the bed, etc. My Yorkie is the most affectionate, playful, friendly, loveable little guy in the world. But he is not one that wants to cuddle all the time. He would rather lie on the other end of the sofa or lie at my feet on the floor. He and my other dog always want to be with me and be near me, but they don't want to be on top of me. Stop and think - there really are some advantages to this. My neighbor's Yorkie want to be on her lap constantly, and she said frankly it gets tiring at times. She wants to trade dogs with me. I said, "No - I like my dogs the way they are." Both my dogs will tolerate cuddling to a point - 10 or 15 minutes - and enjoy it, but then they are off to find their spot at my feet or beside me. And - they both follow me all over the house. They really do want to be with me no matter where I go. This is definitely my dogs' personalities - I don't expect much change. But, I love the way they are. I'm a busy person and am up and down a lot. I'm glad that I don't have two little dogs that are whinning because they want me to hold them all the time. Good luck! Carol Jean |
I don't know. I have two. Brandy has always been a cuddler. Pretty much anytime I want to sit down she is right there and immediately leaps up onto my lap to cuddle (even in the bathroom which is kinda wierd). My other one, Titan, is much more independent. He occasionally honors me with a visit but he's just too busy to waste valuable play time snuggling. When he is in my lap he is usually standing up licking my face. When he is tired he goes somewhere quiet to sleep. I often find him in my closet asleep in my dirty clothes. Pretty much the only cuddle time I get from him is in bed at night where both dogs sleep with me I got Brandy first and became used to a dog that would relax in my arms. The minute Titan was placed in my arms I could sense a difference. He doesn't relax against me. He will allow me to hold him but he is always figeting and looking around. The second he hears a noise or sees something interesting he flies off my lap to check it out. |
It could be his personality - some dogs are more affectionate than others. Oscar comes to work with me and sleeps in my lap all day - he loves to cuddle. When we sit on the couch, he curls up in my lap and when I lay down, he lays on my chest, right up close to my face. He's a snuggle bum. Your pup may grow to be more affectionate for sure. One thing I've always found, if you try to force them, they fight it more. |
Bo is more cuddly at night also....and when he first gets up in the morning....he wakes up licking me it is so sweet lol....but during the day he likes to lay by himself........use to i wouldnt let him lay alone i would grab him up and hold him and my hubby would say let him alone how would you like to be held all the time....and that hit home with me so now i let him lay by himself and let him come to me when he wants to.....i would think he was lonely when he would lay alone but if that was the case he wouldnt be laying alone he knows he can get on me or hubby anytime....i think they will come around when they want to and in time they will become more loving. |
Chelsey likes to be cuddled and carried around like a baby ALL day, she has been this way every since we have her, she is now 19 months. Chanel did not like to be cuddled for too long, she is starting to change now and will come to us for cuddles and sleeps, she used to pass by showering us with her kisses and run off to play again, but now she will sit with us for a while lol. She is 16 months. |
affectionate yorkie I think as he gets older he'll become more cuddly. When I first got my puppy she didn't want to be held or sleep by me on the bed. It's been a month and now I'll find her sneaking her way to cuddle by my body during the night. She's still not big on laying on my lap during the day but she has so much energy that I think it's hard to for to sit still. |
Some puppies are VERY affectionate like Chanel was ...and some are like Cheri who took a little longer to figure out being smooched on alot is fun - now at 2 she is a HUGE kisser. When you asked are they affectionate ?? OH YES ! There are some days I have to pry them off my face. Expecially Chanel - she's always wanting to do 'make-out' sessions - I LOVE kissing on my girls and they love being kissed..... We do different kinds of kisses - Chanel knows French Kiss...Movie Kiss and Drive-By Kisses.......Cheri knows Drive-bys and Butterfly kissing ...LOL....yes I'm sick and name the style of kissing we do.:p oh an can't forget the RASBERRY kisses on the tummies! That's the big one guaranteed to have them flat on their backs squealing with laughter. |
I have the same problem as you do. I even opened a thread about it some time ago, lol My yorkie is 6 month old and he hate to be held...and he is cute only while sleeping. I really hope it will change, but i am not sure. I think it's a personality...some dogs are lap dogs some aren't. I am very very pissed about it, but there is nothing i can do :( |

Jewels is a cuddler and wants to be held all the time. Chachi is more when he wants it only |
Dixie is a HUGE cuddler, but only with me. If someone else is holding her she tries to get to me. If I'm sitting, she is in my lap pressed up against me as close as she can get. I am a transcriptionist so I'm sitting a lot and she's tiny so she sits in my lap as I work. I absolutely love that she is such a lap love! :D My Bernese Mountain Dogs are lap loves too. They will try to get as much of their big bodies in your lap as they possibly can! Zelda is about 45lbs at 17 weeks and Odin is 32lbs at 13 weeks. Dixie does like to cuddle with Zelda if I'm not available. ;) Zelda is like a mommy to her. She cleans her and nuzzles her close to her. She's very gentle with Dixie. |
Interesting. Maybe i am wrong but i have a feeling that most of the males yorkies are not cuddler, and a females yorkies very cuddler. (at list this is what i see in many threads on the board.) Is it just me, or that true? |
I think it's just a puppy thing. I've noticed that since my dogs have gotten older, they've become my velcro babies. London is still a young thing, though and she's not as affectionate (only on HER terms) as my other two. Give it time. |
Gus has always been a mamma's boy. He doesn't necessarily have to be on my lap but he has to be right next to me. Like now, he's in back of me. I will sit there and he will whimper till I move up till there is enough room for him so that he can jump up and lay down. Otherwise he's on my lap or on my feet while I'm on the computer. Before my father in law passed he was staying with us and Gus did take to him. One day we were all watching TV and Gus left my side to and went to sit on David's belly. Oh how he went on and on, and was making a big deal out of it. I told him not to get too happy, and that if I were to get up and walk out of the room Gus WILL follow me. He even bet my $5.oo. So I got up and walked out and sure enough Gus followed me. As a puppy all he wanted was me but as he got older he would cuddle with pretty much everyone in the house but only if I'm in clear view. The only time Gus will run from me is when he sees me getting his bath stuff out. Then he's my husband or Des's (my oldest daughter) best friend. |

Chester was a cuddler from day 1 he would take lots of naps with me, he still does, he will be be my feet or on top of me when we are on the couch. He is under the covers at nite or by my feet or next to me he is my lover boy. |
It's probably a puppy thing. My Millie and Bonnie are very affectionate but they do like to have their own space. Millie is the perfect amount of affectionate as she'll give loads and loads of kisses, cuddles and she'll sleep on my lap and she follows me where ever I am. She is really loyal and will stay by my side if I'm in bed no matter who calls her. But she just as equally sleeps on the sofa by herself. Bonnie will also sleep on the sofa by herself but she's on my Mum's (she's my parents Yorkie) lap all day long. She gives lots of kisses and cuddles and she'll follow too. I think you might find that you have it quite good as Bonnie is forever scratching at my Mum's leg, demanding and crying to sit on her lap and she never gets a minutes peace! Love and light, Chrissy xxx |
Zoe...who is 3.5...loves to snuggle...but Lizzie...who is 9mo. and Zoes daughter....likes to sit next to you and if you pick her up and try to snuggle she will wiggle away.....however she has to always sit next to you with her little butt resting on some part of you body. |
Wow so many different perspectives Charlie does want to be with me but just doesn't want me to hold him on my lap. He follows me from room to room, I have been painting the porch and he is in the house, he lays right next to the screen door watching, and waits for me to finish. I'm thinking as he gets a little older he may cuddle more. I have noticed that the breeders tend to say their males are snuggle bugs where as the females are often more independent. Not to say there isnt always the exception. I do know that poodle males are much more affectionate than females as I have had both and the males are truly sweethearts, that is why I chose a male yorkie, but they are completely different personalities and so not sure bout the male female thing with yorkies. Time will tell.....:animal36 |
Charlie read my posting Charlie must have read my thread. 2 days ago he was sitting by my feet and whimpering, I though he had to go out and I got up to let him out but he just sat there so I picked him up and sat him on my lap, he cuddled right up, and been doing so ever since, guess he had to grow up a bit. we are very happy now!:D |
We are so lucky because our little baby has been a lap dog and cuddly, cuddly, cuddly from the day we brought him home when he was 7 weeks old. In fact, I didn't know dogs could be so cuddly. He always wants to be held and when he sleeps next to me he's right up against me - even if I move he'll find a spot right up next to me. I love it. I hope your baby starts cuddling soon. Our baby will be 5 years old on Aug. 10th! :aimeeyork |
Kizzy does not want to be held except when SHE wants to be held which isnt often. She will come and raise up on my leg gently if she wants me to pick her up but if she just wants to play she rares up on my leg with a ball or some kind of toy in her mouth. But she loves to lay on my hubby at night when he gets home. But all day she plays but always pretty much in the room I am in or at least where she sees me. she has beds in several rooms too that she will hop in and go to sleep if I am in that room. If she isnt playing she is right beside me somewhere in the floor asleep if i'm sitting. Every time I get up no matter if I just walk 3 steps she is up and right along with me then if I sit back down she lays right back down where she was. So she definitely wants to be close to me but is not the type who wants to sit in my lap all the time. I'm glad of that because I think it would soon get on my nerves. she seems very independent as far as thinking she dont have to be on us every minute. She does not sleep with us and probably never will. For now she isnt totally house broken and she sleeps in a soft crate zipped in at night at the head of my bed in the floor. I really dont think she would want to sleep with us as she has never tried to get in bed with us but a few times on weekends when hubby dont have to get up early for work we'll put her on the bed with us. and she loves to run all over the bed and try licking us like they all do and looks so happy and sweet. But a lap baby she isnt untill she wants to be one herself. sometimes tho she looks so sweet laying at my feet sleeping I just pick her up and lay her in my lap then she will lay there a while and let me rub her and she acts like shes relaxing so much and I take my fingers and barely touch her hair on her paws and chest and across her head in feathering kinds of ticklish way. she loves that. |
My Yorkie is 10 weeks old and she sleeps at my feet whenever I sit on the couch. |
My Tibbe is a big snuggler and will cuddle his 3 1/2 year old 5.3 lb. body right up next to my neck on the same pillow I have my head on - whether in the bed or on the couch. Otherwise, he is on my lap much of the time. My former Yorkie was a female and way more independent than my male and did not like up-close, long bouts of cuddling unless she initiated it. I think dogs do have different personalities, psychological make-up and ways just like people. |
