Little dog and Big dog 2 Attachment(s) We have a 15 mo old female Yorkie... Bree. We just got an 8 week old Yellow Labrador... Chunk. While Bree is still a little timid around Chunk when she eats, but they do play. I'm just scared that the 25lb monster is gonna squash Bree who is only 3lbs. Anyone else have a Yorkie and a big dog? Any suggestions? My Beautiful Girl Attachment 61359 My Big Clumsy Boy Attachment 61360 |
I'll bet they'll be best buds! They are both just too cute!:D |
Aww, look how cute. :) |
no advice just here for 2 things........ 1: :yorkietal :welcome4: :wavey: WELCOME TO YT!:wavey: :welcome4: :yorkietal and 2: chunk is adorable! enjoy him! :) |
Ok, be prepared, you are in for a LOT of fun BUT keep an eye on them until the lab is old and wise enough to realise that she/he is MUCH bigger then your yorkie. We got our lab a few months before we started looking for a little one, she was still clumsy with my yorkie and thought she was a walking toy, she used to carry her around the house by her shirt, we had to watch them like a hawk. They get on great and it's hilarious to watch them play, the girls are way faster at turning corners and hiding under chairs then what the lab is lol... it's so cute! |
Yes, we have Tatum (about 5 lbs - 2 years old) and Stormie, an Australian Shepherd (not sure of her weight). Stormie is very gentle with Tatum and even when Tatum is playing chase with her, Stormie will slow down for Tatum to keep up. Of course, you always need to be on the watch because accidents can happen but once they get used to each other, the accidents will almost always be totally unintentional. |
2 Attachment(s) My Pippa is 8lb and Jake my golden lab is 40kg!!!! She kicks his ass all day long!!!;) |
LOVE the pics! We have 2 yorkies now, but my husband is dying for a labrador. I am glad you started this thread...now I'm looking forward to getting a lab! Oh, and welcome to YorkieTalk! |
I have Airedale terrier and yorkie. And its doesnt work :( They love eachather, but the Airedale always hurts my yorkie (she doesnt mean to, just to big, and she doesn't understand that she should be careful...she is not very smart). So after some acidents, i don't give them to play together. |
I think it depends on the bigger dog. (How old, how calm, etc...) Louie plays great with my aunt's two labs that are atleast 60lbs. I think they know to be gentle with him, but my best friend's corgi that is only 30 lbs just doesn't get it. He will pounce on Louie and chase him. It scares Louie's 2.5lbs. to death! I would say definitley supervise. |

Dont worry we have a Yorkie and a Great Dane and she is use to 2 Danes in the house, she does just fine!!! We are goign to be getting another one here in August.... |
Too cute and I love the name 'Chunk' ...how did you come up with that one ? |
I have a 90 lb yellow lab, and I just got Schatzi, who is 2.5 lbs. At first, my lab was afraid of her!:p But after the introductions, they are getting alog very well. I am actually surprised he is so cautious of her when they play (so far). Today they were playing tug of war with a rope bone, and Schatzi thought for sure she was going to win.... and she did! It was hilarious:aimeeyork my lab is acting like her big brother, it's really cute- |
We have two labs too, with our tiny Phoebe 2 Attachment(s) Porsha, our black lab, is about 70 lbs. She's like a big mama to Phoebs. She lays down and just moves her head around. I don't know how to show a video I got of them, but I have one. Sawyer, our dopey boy at 86 lbs. , loves Phoebe too. But he gets more excited. We are in the process of teaching him how to lay down to play with her. Phoebe loves their wagging tails, and tugs on them. We only have very supervised play time, then Phoebe is either with me, or in her pen. Sometimes the labs wrestle with eachother, so Phoebe would definitely join in and get severely hurt. So there is never any free time for her. At least not until she learns how to stay out of the way. It's doable, but you have to take care. I don't plan to always have big dogs. I love my labbies, but when they are gone, I'm done with them.... deb |

Your lab will be a lot more gentle than you think. I have 2 yorkies and a choc lab she is 6 1/2 years old though Wyatt my 11 1/2 month old absolutely loves her. He is all over her all the time. I would just watch them for a little while and they should be fine. Keep us posted. They are both beautiful. I attached a couple of pictures of the two of them playing. My son also has a yorkie and a boxer and they get along great. |
1 Attachment(s) We have a 3 1/2lb Yorkie and an 80lb Boxer and Georgie (Yorkie) tears Coco up LOL! He has renewed Coco and she plays now more than ever (she is almost 7).My brother has 2 labs and a Yorkie and they get along great:D I would just watch them initially to make sure the lab doesn't get excited and pounce around, but for the most part I think they are a great combination. Here is a pic of my niece with our 2 furbabies:D |
i am actually concerned about the same thing, i have an english pointer, she's full of energy and very very active, i'm getting a maltese soon and was a little concerned how they would get along. she's played with other little dogs in the past and has been gentle but i'm still a little worried. maybe she will be scared of the malt? lol |

you would be amazed at how the bigger dogs are. I was nervous about Coco but Georgie steals her toys and she just let's him. They play hide and go seek meaning Georgie will hide behind the chair and Coco will squeeze back there to find him and he will run LOL. It's great to watch. Oh and last thing Coco is protective over Georgie when we take walks if she hears another dog she looks for it and watches Georgie to make sure he is okay;) Shecass your babies look like my Georgie and Coco when they play Coco gets down on her front legs and gets ready to play with Georgie or chase him:D |
1 Attachment(s) I have a 3.5 month old gsd & a 10 month 4.5 pound yorkie....Max adores Lexie and Lexie loves Max, but I don't ever leave Lexie's site she is always with me or close for me to get. Max would not hurt on purpose(bite) but Lexie loves to chase Max and that gets him going so he starts to chase back and being a puppy he doesn't realize Lexie could get hurt (she doesn't either/she thinks she is the big dog) Max is also very protective of Lexie and Peanut, he loves them dearly but till he learns how big he really is and gets out of the awkward puppy phase Mom has to be right there...:D Here they are giving kisses.... |

don't most little dogs think they are bigger than they actially are? :D i know a chiahua (sp?) and he acts so tough and cute, i told his owner he is definately a large dog trapped in a little dogs body. he's kind of muscly for a chi and he struts around the house like a king lol he's adorable :) |

We have a 80 pound golden retiever Amy and our two lil yorkies My Male Kodi scolds Amy All the time . She ignores him LOL. My female Daisy just loves to give kisses. And Amy just loves it up.We did get Amy after the yorkies and she was 2 yrs. at that time. Good luck with your new fur baby;) |
Yorkie and mastiff I have a yorkie that is 4 lb ..I also have a Mastiff Great Dane he is 170 lb .. Max was 2yrs old when I introduced him to my yorkie ..I watched that dog like a hawk ..I was really worried for the first 2 weeks ..They are Best Friends .. I will have to take a couple of pics of Maggie and Max ..They do look pretty funny together ... Now the only one that gets hurt is me because I have 170lbs on my lap ... Jeniece |
They are both adorable! |
We have 2 yorkies and my in-laws have a yellow lab and they all LOVE to play together! The labrador is surprisingly SO gentle with them! It is so hilarious. My hubby and I plan on getting a labrador in the future, so it is good to see how well all these big dogs get along with all these little dogs. |
I got a 88lb boxer and a 2.8 lb yorkie and they get along beautifully!!! They love each other and play with each other all the time. My boxer loves chloe so much and you can tell she even looks out for her little sister. You would really be surprised how well big dog's know thier size and strength. LIke Penny (my boxer) will play tug-o-war with chloe and she knows she can barely tug on it since chloe is so tiny. You should see my dog's blogs at myspace (link is in my signature) and you will see how well big dogs and little dogs get along.:p |

Their Penny had the same coloring as your girl. |
This is Toy (yorkie) With Jodi (airdalle) http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3959/dsc08144zx.jpg I see most of you have yorkie with labs...so i gues it's a good combo. My airdale just hyrt him everytime :( So they can't play together. |

They are both adorable. I love that your yorkie's tail hasn't been docked. I almost didn't dock Mollie's babies tails but, I went with the norm. |
