Garnier Nutrisse -- WOW! Bobby got absolutely filthy while out playing this weekend so it was bath time. But I realized then that we were out of his puppy shampoo so I used our Garnier Nutrisse shampoo. WOW, did it ever make his coat soft, shiny and full of body! I didn't even need to use the grooming spray to brush him. Is it bad for their fur and skin to use human shampoo? If not, I'm going to continue using it on him. His fur has never been this silky and manageable -- not even after a visit to the pet salon! Julie |
I've heard that using people shampoo on dogs can be harmful to their hair and skin? Does anyone know the harmful ingredient? Should I not worry about it? :) |
the thing with human shampoo is that its a different pH then dog skin. |
i have used people shampoo on my dogs forever and had no problems just watch for itching scratching stuff like that then i would stop using it |
yeah from what i've read on the forum, yorkie hair is so much like people hair that there usually isn't a problem when using people shampoo. |

that's what I was going to say. I don't think using it this one time is bad, but all the time I don't think it's good for them. |
it will dry there skin out, yorkies have a oil base to there coat and they need that oil to keep there coat healthy, if you use human shampoo it will take that oil away. |
I still use the puppy tearless shampoo on Mya but I condition her with 60 second hair repair. She has not had a skin problem. |
I think it is worse to use a human shampoo than a human conditioner. |
I use baby shampoo on Tiffany |
I checked the bottle and it's the 2 in 1 conditioning shampoo with fruit extracts. It did a lot better job than the puppy shampoo, which leaves his coat kinda dry. Maybe I can switch off and use it sometimes. Our vet said the most important thing is to not over-bathe -- just once every six weeks or so. Julie |

HUH? bathe your dog ONCE every 6 weeks!!?? My dog would get stinky!! I bathe her once every 5 days, and she doesnt get itchy... |

Goodness! I can't imagine how awful Bella would smell if I waited six weeks to bathe her. She gets bathed once a week, and by that point, she neeeeeds it. I hate doggy smell. LOL. |
I bathe Bobby about once per month, unless he's gotten really dirty. I brush him every night. Seriously, the vet said you're not supposed to bathe a lot because it will dry out their skin. I have a collie with skin problems and our vet said I should not bathe him more often than every two months but to brush him every day. Julie |
I think the vet is probably right when it comes to your collie. My vet said it's fine to bathe our yorkie and chihuahua once a week. In fact our vet bathes his chihuahua once a week too. The most important thing is too rinse them really, really well. :) |
