My Yorkie Was Just Attacked!! OMG, I am shaking and crying right now. I just took Rocco out for a walk and I was going by a house that had a "beware of dog" sign. All of a sudden 3 dogs jumped the fence and started attacking him. One got ahold of his neck and just picked him up. The owner came out and grabbed my dog and picked him up. I was so scared that I didn't even do that and I feel horrible. I was afraid the other dogs were going to attack me. I am petrified of big dogs. The guy tried to maintain that they were just playing. I said that NO they weren't playing and the one was biting. All 3 were circling him and growling. He gave me back Rocco and said "bye rocco" like nothing happened!! I can't believe it. Rocco is fine except that dog's spit is all over him. He was yelping and so scared I feel awful. Is there anything I can do so this doesn't happen again??? They live right across the street and now I know the dog can easily jump the fence. I am just so upset that it was such a close call. |
 I say call the Police and report the owner ASAP! It's not safe that the dogs can easily jump that fence! Give Rocco hugs and kisses from me & Zoey. |
Should I call animal control or police? |

Yes, I would call both. It is terrible a that happened. Poor baby!! But call and report it, next time it could be a child or your baby again! |
I would call the police, If they can jump the fence then they are not properly restrained. Not sure what your citys laws are, but you can find out by calling the police and reporting it. MaryKay ps, I hope your little Rocco is better now. Poor baby, it is not your fault. I would steer clear of walking by that house again for sure! |
Yikes, I'm so sorry this happened to you. And don't feel bad about not picking him up. You were in shock and stopped dead in your tracks! Thank God he is okay. I don't want you to make enemies with your neighbor, but they shouldn't be able to hop the fence like that! I'm sorry, I don't know what you should do. |
OMG my heart stopped reading that - They jumped the fence ? What's the point of a fence if they can just jump over it ? I agree you need more protection if they're going after dogs walking...that's very scary and he could so easily have been killed - COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS TODAY !! Rocco had an angel on his shoulder...Poor baby. |

I would be so upset and angry too! I am so paranoid about other dogs that when I'm out walking Oscar I always pick him up when I see another dog (even if it's just a schnauzer). That owner is absolutely at fault! |
I would definitely report it before they injure a child or another dog. If they can jump the fence then he needs to build a higher fence Not sure why one would keep three big dogs in a yard adjacent to a sidewalk anyway. Or why anyone would want the liabity of three large vicious dogs. Beware Of Dog signs do not relieve one of their liability. |
There were 3 dogs and I definitely saw the one hop the fence. Then the other 2 showed up out of nowhere. I think their gate was open. My stomach is so upset right now. And poor Rocco is just hiding in the corner. He is soooo lucky. The owner kept yelling to pick him up and I just froze. Finally I dropped everything and tried to get him but it was chaos. It was terrifying. I need to get the number on the house and then will call the police. We are sooo lucky. God, I always read about this happening but never really thought it would actually happen. Ya know?? |

OMG that is terrible. I truly understand you not picking up your puppy as I am terrified of bigger dogs, even if they are up to my knees. Had a bad experience from a chow chasing me once as a kid. And thats why I suppose. But anyway, nobody should have dogs that arent restrained enough for people to be safe even outside their area. if you took yourself onto his property where his dogs were inside the fence, thats different. but for them to jump that fence and attack anyone is a serious problem. |
I am so glad thqt both you and Rocco were unharned in the incident. I know you must be terrified, I know I would be. I would call the police immediately. Because he has a "Beware of Dogs" sign, he is advertising to the world that he has a viscious dog. I would demand that animal control get involved and take appropriate action to protect the public from these killer dogs. |
That is terrible what happened. But was your dog on a leash? Keeping him closer might help out in case this happens again. Plus you might have trouble calling the police on his dogs being loose if your dog was loose as well. I would first try to talk to the neighbor about it. Maybe there is a way he can keep better control of his dogs by keeping them inside or improving his fence. If he doesn't fix the problem then call the police/animal control for his dogs running loose. Thank god you two are both safe. |
call the cops. no doubt. who's to say those dogs wouldn't attack a toddler? better safe than sorry. |
I am sorry this happened to you. I dont know if the police will do anything since you werent hurt but it cant hurt to call them. Definitely call animal control |
Rocco was on a leash. We were walking on the other side of the street. I took him to the vet cause he did have a puncture mark on his neck. I just called my husband and we are going to get animal control involved. There is no way that any dog or child is safe walking past their house. I want my vet bill covered too but I will just be happy if they have to revise their fence. I just don't want to be scared to go outside. |
I agree with everyone. I would report it right away. Big dogs should not be able to run free or get out of their yards...any dog for that matter. I am afraid of big dogs also and don't let mine anywhere near them even if the owner says they won't hurt my dogs. If that happened to me I would be having a nice big glass of wine right now...after I talked with the police! Take care and I hope everything works out. |
Jank, wine sounds so good right now. I don't have any alcohol in the house but I am sooo wishing I did. My nerves are still all messed up. Thanks for all the support. I felt so alone cause I couldn't get ahold of my husband and we are new to the area so I really didn't have anyone to call. I appreciate it! |
Definitely report it! Two weeks ago I was walking Peanut back inside the house (we were only 3 steps from the door) when suddenly two pit bulls came out of nowhere and started barking growling and nudging Peanut. I started screaming my head off because Im scared of big dogs, but thankfully my reflexes kicked in and i actually kicked one away from Peanut and I also hit him with my purse ;) No worries, I did not do any damage on the pit bulls, and Peanut suffered no physical wounds. although he is scared of the front yard now : ( |
Why the heck do big dogs like to go after little dogs? Do they think of them as prey? I just called animal control. If I was attacked by a dog then I would have no qualms about reporting it. And since Rocco can't fend for himself, I have to do it. I feel bad cause maybe I should talk to the owner first but he was an idiot about the whole thing trying to convince me they were just playing. I bet he had other incidents like that and was scared I was going to report him. |

If your baby had a puncture wound on his neck verified by the vet, this was an official attach with a bite. It shouldn't matter whether it was an animal or a person that was attacked. As all 3 dogs were involved in the attack, this neighbor has some serious issues at hand. A report definitely needs to be made with the information from your vet. Make sure they know the neighbor was calling you to "pick up your dog". He obviously knew what his dogs were capable of, which makes this all the worse. Give Rocco a big hug from us and tell him we are so glad you and he are okay. |

yes bigger dogs can & do think of smaller dogs as prey they will kill them ! i have a rottweiler that absolutely hates weenie dogs! i have no idea why! but she would kill one in a second i believe she would if she had 1/2 a chance .circling and growling isn't playing it's a pack mentality where they take turns attacking until they are done ! those people don't have beware of dog sign for nothing it's to try and help cover theirselves "there was a warning"! but how is anyone to know they are actually loose?! i woulda beat the crap out of those dogs and snatched mine up super quick, as best i could have anyways..im use to all kinds of dogs though! i wouldn't leave my rottie unattended around any other animals or people. it's just a given responsibility with large dogs. if you can't control or understand them and blow it off as just playing then you shouldn't have them at all! i would be infuriated!what's wrong with that guy?! neighbor or not. a big dogs bad enough but 3 that they can't control? sorry but that kinda thing just steams me! p.s my rottie is over 100lbs mind you lexus rottie and princess yorkie http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ters1/pets.jpg |

Yes and Yes I would call both and next time I take him for a walk I would carry him when I went passed that house. Some people are morons! I am glad that Rocco is okay God bless his little heart. I am also sorry that you had to go through that. Hugs to Rocco from Georgie and I. |
I agree with the last post. I read SOMEWHERE once that if you have a sign that reads BEWARE of DOG you are advertising Danger and if something happens it will come back to haunt you. Call the police, call the SPCA at least if nothing else you can make sure that this man has had all of his dogs vacinated and is up to date on their shots and that they all have registered dog licenses. Some states will take your dogs if they are not licensed and/ or impose a VERY HIGH fine. |
OMG! I can't believe that happened! Your baby definitely had an angel watching him! I'm so glad he (and you!) are ok. Definitely call someone to take care of the "dog problem"....that's scary that they can jump their fence; it makes it so pointless! I hope you can relax a little....give your baby lots of hugs from me and Schatzi :) |
I hope that you and Rocco are feeling better tonight. You should report him. You and your dog and everybody else has a right to walk down the street without being threatened by dogs. He also was putting you at risk by telling you to pick up your dog as his dog is on top of Rocco. Some people are just ignorant fools. You and Rocco are lucky, do your best so that it doesn't happen again to you or somebody else with dire results. Sorry you had to experience that. :( JM |
