NY Bill Will Prohibit Tail Docking And Cropping This is on the AKC website. Seems as though they are trying to pass a law that prohibits tail docking and ear cropping...I wonder if they'll prohibit dew claw removals as well. http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=2878 |
Thing is, once one state passes this new laws, how many other states will follow? What will this say about the show world??? Some interesting points... In order to show or compete in any event, including conformation, field trials, performance events and companion events, an owner will have to prove that the dog's tail was docked prior to September 1, 2006 or the surgery was performed in another state. Finally, the bill sets up a private right of action that would allow any dog owner or animal rights organization to sue a person who violates this section. Therefore an animal rights group could sue a breeder, owner or veterinarian under this proposal. |
Personally, I hope it doesn't pass. |
i dont know how i feel about this them having tails wont make me love them less but i do like them without |
That's very interesting. I guess if we had never gotten used to them being docked, we wouldn't know the difference. It does seem a bit cruel, but then so does circumcision. Dewclaws are just plain ugly, so I hope they don't prohibit that. |
There are health risks to dew claws though. If they get torn off it's very painful for the dog. There aren't risks involved in keeping tails or ears as far as I know |
Yes, I saw this on Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and they are against it. I am not sure where I stand on this issue because I know it has to hurt when it's done, but I do prefer the way it looks. I don't think it's fair to just prohibit it in New York though. If it was prohibited throughout the entire U.S. then we would get use to it, and eventually prefer it. |
My all breed AKC dog club talked about this bill at our last week's meeting and word has it - the Bill will not pass. They have been trying to get it to pass for 2 years and no go. |

but tails, idk I mean, sometimes I think I like Tila without the tail, I mean I think they're tails are probably really ratty, like my other dog, I feel bad for her because her tail gets all messy and tangled, and she HATES water so when we have to wash her it's terrible and I feel sooo bad. anyways I hope this law doesn't pass... |
If this bill does pass, will it affect the breed standard? How are people supposed to show their dogs with this law passed? |

Actually, America is one of the few countries that still dock tails and crop ears. In European countries, it's banned and not allowed. |

Guys, did you read my post? The Bill will not pass and has been up for the last 2 years and has not passed. So it won't pass now. Just because a Bill is out there does not mean it will pass. It is just up for discussion. Have you ever seen some of the Bills that have been out there? Some are really wierd. I think that natural tails would be great! I hate having to dock their tails. I agree about the dewclaws, but I do have to say that I have two dogs with dewclaws, since they were imports and they have never had a problem. They were 6 months old when I got them, so too old to remove and did not want to put them through it. |
Personally I like the look of the docked tail...I like the way Sadies little back end wiggles when she wags her nub! What's going to end up happening....Breeders are going to start removing dew claws and docking tails themselves...then we will have puppies with infections. Or.....they will just bring them to another state. Usually docking and dew claws are done at a very young age...I'm sure it pinches but what about declawing a cat? They are like 6 to 8 weeks old and older....that is actually amputation! Why wouldn't they want to do something about that....What next? circumcision?! |
There are many breeders now and in the past that remove the dewclaws and tails themselves. I have never heard of a puppy having an infection. I am sure it could happen - just never heard myself. Tails and dewclaws are usually removed at the age of 4 days old. There are several ways it can be done. I personally take mine to the vet, since I am older and cannot see as well as I use to and I personally don't want to hurt the pups. Dewclaws are very tricky too. They can grow back if you do not get enough removed and you do not want to take off too much. The problem with having a vet removed the tails is that many do not know exactly where to dock. So you as a breeder must educate the vet exactly where to cut for a proper looking docked tail. Do not assume all vets know the proper length. If states made it a law against docking, eventually all states would come around as well as AKC and soon you would have yorkies with long tails. I personally don't care either way. I have grown a custom to docked tails, but I don't mind the longer tails either. I feel it is probably my humane not to dock. I have heard the pups screams when tails are docked. It hurts!! And it is also hard on the moms to hear their pups cries as well as having them be seperated from their pups until it is over. |
