Angel Gagging This morning Angel was gagging for less than 10 sec., and I thought she might be vomiting; however, she spewed up what looked like spit/foam onto her blanket. Is this normal? She hasn't done it since. |
I don't think it's anything to worry about. Sometimes if they get a little something caught int their throat, even a piece of lint, their gag reflex kicks in. The foam or whatever is usually the mucas that gathers with gagging. Just like when you get something in your eye, it waters, same thing. The throat tries to protect itself with lubrication. Just keep an eye on her and see if it happens again. If it becomes frequent, contact your Vet. |

yeah i agree, it shouldn't be a problem. as long as she's acting healthy and normal otherwise and hasn't done it again. she might have just got some dust or whatever caught in her throw and gave a dry cough to get it out but ended up spiting up too. |

Sometimes that happens when Loki has an empty tummy, or drinks too much water too fast, or the water is too cold. He's done is a few times. Luckily I usually hear him start to gag so I can grab him and run in the bathroom or throw a towel under him! |
Georgie has done that occasionally in the am when he has an empty tummy. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens more often. |
I'm assuming it was the yellow frothy stuff. This is the dog's way of emptying it's stomach of stomach acid. When people eat, our body secretes the acids to break down the food once the food is in our stomachs. Dogs body's act differently and secrete the fluid in anticipation of a meal. So if it starts to happen more frequently give food or a doggie biscuit late in the evening and feed earlier in the morning so there is food in the stomach to absorb these acids. If it seems that the dog has an overproduction of stomach acids even while feeding frequently then you could give a 1/2 of a Tums which would work the same on them, as us. |
The gagging happened before I put her bowl of food down for her. The froth looked white, not yellow. I'm glad to know that other people's dogs have experienced this. Thanks for the information. |

The breeders I got my dog from are a couple. The husband said she's not getting enough food. He mentioned something about her bile and stomach acid building up. Since she's a "teacup," he said she should be free fed. Before I took Angel home, his wife told me to free feed her for the first 3 days and then feed her 3 times a day until she's 8 months old, which is when I'm to reduce it to twice a day, and take the bowl away after an hour and a half. I told the hubby what his wife said, and he said that they thought she would've adjusted by now, but since she's going to be tiny, I should free feed her. I feed her a 1/4 cup of kibble a day split into 3 meals, and she normally eats it all. If I keep refilling her bowl to make sure it's not empty, will she gain too much weight? I feed her at 8 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The longest time she's without food is overnight. I was thinking that I might just leave the kibble for her overnight but not free feed her during the day. What do you think? |
How old is she and how much does she weigh? I don't think 1/4 of a cup is enough. |
